Flexible Overlay: Unearthing Potential At The Nebraska State Fair Park, Katherine A. Gluckselig
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
The Nebraska State Fair Park is utilized to its full extent for only eleven days in the fall when the annual State Fair takes place. For the remaining fifty weeks of the year, the vast outdoor space sits vacant and underutilized. The Fair “Park,” as it is called, is not a park at all—as a collection of empty buildings and useless lots, it offers little possibility for recreational use by members of the surrounding community. Not only does the current layout fail to encourage seasonal activities, it does not provide optimal support for the State Fair itself. Buildings have been …

Analysis Of Distal-Less Gene Expression In Ciona Intestinalis, Michelle Cangiano
Analysis Of Distal-Less Gene Expression In Ciona Intestinalis, Michelle Cangiano
Senior Honors Projects
Several homeobox-containing genes related to Distal-less (Dlx/Dll) have been isolated from a wide variety of organisms and have been shown to function as developmental regulators. In Drosophila only one Distal-less gene has been identified so far, and in vertebrates many components of the Distal-less family have been characterized. This suggests that, during the evolution of the Chordate phylum, the Dlx genes arose from an ancestral Distal-less gene via gene duplication. Three Dll homeoboxes have been isolated from the protochordate Ciona intestinalis and their clustered arrangement has been described. Since Ciona is regarded as one of the most primitive extant chordates, …

Why some virus-specific CD8 TCR repertoires are diverse and others restricted or “oligoclonal” has been unknown. We show here that oligoclonality and extreme clonal dominance can be a consequence ofTcell crossreactivity. Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) and Pichinde virus (PV) encode NP205–212 epitopes that induce different but highly cross-reactive diverseTCRrepertoires. Homologous viral challenge ofimmune mice only slightly skewed the repertoire and enriched for predictable TCR motifs. However, heterologous viral challenge resulted in a narrow oligoclonal repertoire with dominant clones with unpredictableTCRsequences. This shift in clonal dominance varied with the private, i.e., unique, specificity of the host’s TCR repertoire and was simulated using …

Journey Into The Process Of Developing A New Skill, Virginia Mcintyre
Journey Into The Process Of Developing A New Skill, Virginia Mcintyre
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Learning a new skill is comprised of several characteristics, some which are necessary and others which are desirable. An individual embarking on this endeavor needs practice, persistence and perseverance. It is desirable to possess intrinsic motivation which leads to available energy for the task. The approach to the process should be conducted with an open mind that embraces the fortitude required to overcome obstacles and celebrate achievements. This project includes the process and offers examples of how the reader may strive to meet such a challenge. Included in the process is a note on art and artists, background of the …

On The Geomorphology, Hydrology, And Biogeochemistry Of Stream-Lake Interactions In The Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, Usa, Christopher D. Arp
Biology
This dissertation focuses on the geomorphology, hydrology, and biogeochemistry of streams and lakes as coupled, interacting ecosystems in the Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, USA. The study design used intensive field studies of several ecosystems nested within a broader comparative study of many ecosystems. Stream geomorphology was affected by lakes due to the glacial legacy of lakes and subsequent modification of water and sediment flux. Hydrologically, streams below lakes had more frequent and longer duration floods, and lakes were shown to attenuate summer floods, but not spring snowmelt floods. Biogeochemically, nutrient uptake among streams showed high phosphate and low nitrate uptake downstream …
Mycobacterium-Plant Interactions In Bioremediation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Compounds, Robert D. Child
Mycobacterium-Plant Interactions In Bioremediation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Compounds, Robert D. Child
Biology
Five mycobacterium isolates that degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons colonize the surface of barley roots from a seed inoculum. Colonization was maintained in the presence of an aggressive root-colonizing pseudomonad. All five of the mycobacterium strains utilized components in root washes for growth but they differed in their potential for biofilm formation. Components in the barley root washes did not impede the mineralization of pyrene. An inexpensive, portable, flexible microcosm chamber system was constructed and implemented in pyrene mineralization experiments. The system facilitated control of sterile conditions, air flow-through, and collection of volatilized radiolabeled compounds. Mineralization rates of pyrene were higher …

A Survey Of The Bees Of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Southern Utah: Incidence, Abundance, And Community Dynamics, Olivia Messinger
Biology
A survey of the bees of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, southern Utah, was conducted over a period of four years. Six hundred and fifty-six species were discovered within the monument, including numerous range extensions, several new species, and three genera new to the state of Utah. This is the richest bee landscape studied to date; reasons for the high diversity include the large elevation gradient, the richness of flowering plants, many of which are limited in distribution and require specific pollinators, and the many small local populations of species. To test the significance of these features on patterns of bee …

The advertising world is a place focused on research, brand identity, and creativity, all of which combine to achieve one seemingly simple goal: to convince the consumer to purchase a specific item. It is often a difficult enough challenge to persuade a buyer that a product is worth her money, but there is one product category that demands something much more valuable than any price tag cost. This category requires its advertising to create a personal bond with the consumer; to welcome it and want it in her life. What is this audacious sounding product that charges something greater than …

Memory & Cognition: What Difference Does Gender Make?, Donna J. Bridge
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Small but significant gender differences, typically favoring women, have previously been observed in experiments measuring human episodic memory performance. In three studies measuring episodic memory, we compared performance levels for men and women. Secondary analysis from a pairedassociate learning task revealed a superior ability for women to learn single function pairs (i.e. words that are represented in only one pair), but performance levels for double function pairs (i.e. pairs that contain words that are also used in one other pair) were similar for men and women. We also reanalyzed data from a recognition experiment that used pictures as stimuli, and …

This creative thesis follows the opening story arc to a larger fiction project in the genre of high fantasy fiction. Structurally and stylistically, by incorporating contemporary contributions to the genre from Japanese popular culture, this story immerses itself in American-Japanese syncretism. This work confronts two central challenges: first, as an American writer, to faithfully integrate conventions originating from a Japanese cultural context; second, to find written analogues for conventions currently anchored to the visual mediums of anime, manga and video games. What post-war Japan has made of the high fantasy genre increasingly saturates American pop culture. It remains to be …

Using The Theory Of Reasoned Action To Examine The Gambling Behaviors Of College Athletes And Other Students., Robert Gene Thrasher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Legal and illegal gambling opportunities are readily available to students on college campuses and surrounding areas (Saum, 1999). College students are at an age that is highly impressionable, experimental, and prime to taking risks while ignoring the potential consequences (Oster, 1992). Because of their desire for competition, college student athletes may be highly susceptible to the lure of gambling. While the rates of pathological gambling are high for college students, the rates for the subpopulation of college student athletes are posited to be even higher (Rockey, Beason, Lee, Stewart, & Gilbert, 1997). The general purpose of the current study was …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of text mining and using the results to show the possible benefits of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. The 555 patients enrolled in the study were receiving inpatient cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Each patient had comorbidity codes associated with them. These codes are secondary diagnoses to the cardiac or pulmonary event that resulted in their hospitalization. The patients had secondary conditions ranging in number from 1 to 10. The patients were assessed at admission and discharge for functional independence. Since there are numerous comorbidity codes for each patient, it would be difficult to analyze each …

Mechanistic Studies Of Guanine-Rich Oligonucleotides., Allicia C. Girvan 1978-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Guanine-rich oligonucleotides (GROs) are being developed as a novel anticancer agents. GROs exhibit potent antiproliferative properties against several malignant cell lines and in established in vivo tumor models. In a recent Phase I clinical trial for patients with advanced cancer, one of these GROs was found to have promising signs of clinical activity with no serious side effects. It has been shown that the activity of GROs requires the formation of a G-quartet structure, and their activity correlates with its ability to bind to a specific complex of proteins. One important GRO-binding protein that has been previously identified is nucleolin, …

Mechanism Of 4-Hydroxynonenal Induced Toxicity In Jurkat Cd4+ T Lymphocytes., Wei Yuan Chang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress-induced immunosuppression could be due to a decrease in CD4 + T lymphocyte activation or proliferation. 4-Hydroxynonenal (HNE), an end product of lipid peroxidation, and its protein adducts act as markers of oxidative stress. In this study, the effects of HNE on a human CD4 + Jurkat T cells were examined. Systematic determinations of the effects of HNE on cytotoxicity, Akt and protein phosphatase 2A(PP2A) activation, Fas/FasL-mediated apoptotic signaling, methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) II activity, MAT 2A and c-Myb expression and cellular glutathione (GSH) and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) levels were performed. The results showed that HNE induced cytotoxicity, downregulated Akt and …

Role Of Caveolin-1 In The Regulation Of The Vascular Shear Stress Response, Philippe G. Frank, Michael P. Lisanti
Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
In blood vessels, endothelia are submitted to constant shear effects and are, under normal conditions, capable of responding to any variation in hemodynamic forces. Caveolae — 50- to 100-nm plasma membrane invaginations present at the surface of terminally differentiated cells and particularly enriched in ECs — are composed of a high sphingolipid and cholesterol content and the protein caveolin-1 (Cav-1). Previous studies have suggested that caveolae and endothelial Cav-1 may regulate the vascular response to altered shear stress. In this issue of the JCI, Yu et al. have examined the role of Cav-1/caveolae in the regulation of flow-induced alterations (i.e., …

Passenger Dies When Semi-Truck Trailer Hits Cow In Roadway, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Motor Vehicle
On November 8, 2005, a 26-year-old male laborer who was a passenger in a semi-truck died when the driver swerved to avoid hitting a cow that was standing in the parkway lane. The two employees had been traveling westbound for approximately one hour when the driver noticed a cow in his lane. He swerved to avoid hitting the cow but hit it anyway. The tractor and two trailers jack-knifed, traveled through the median with the cab and trailers flipped onto their right sides, slid across the eastbound lanes, then the cab slammed through the guardrail. The cab came to rest …
North American Trade Corridors: An Initial Exploration, Stephen Blank
North American Trade Corridors: An Initial Exploration, Stephen Blank
Faculty Working Papers and Articles
The North American economic system cannot be meaningfully visualized in terms of trade among three nations. A more accurate and useful map would focus on the elements of deep structural integration that distinguish the North American economy—on continental production, distribution and supply chain systems characteristic of many North American industries, on emerging cross-border regional development projects, and on "trade corridors" that link major transportation and production hubs. This paper examines the North American trade corridor phenomenon. The great increase in the volume of materials moving north and south has generated competition among businesses, cities, and municipalities to build channels for …
