Practitioner's Corner: Reflections From Vida Verde, Laura Dickerson And Shawn Sears

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

We provide outdoor education for 600 low-income students per year. We have a waiting list of teachers hoping to bring their classes every year, and there are thousands and thousands more that we cannot reach. Many days that feels like an overwhelming and impossible uphill battle. My hope is that we can figure out a way to help make outdoor education accessible to all children. At Vida Verde we watch these tough urban kids let down their guards for a couple of days. They let go of their baggage and they become children again. They paint their faces with mud, …

Parasitism And A Shortage Of Refuges Jointly Mediate The Strength Of Density Dependence In A Reef Fish, Graham E. Forrester, Rachel J. Finley May 2006

Parasitism And A Shortage Of Refuges Jointly Mediate The Strength Of Density Dependence In A Reef Fish, Graham E. Forrester, Rachel J. Finley

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Various predator-prey, host-pathogen, and competitive interactions can combine to cause density dependence in population growth. Despite this possibility, most empirical tests for density-dependent interactions have focused on single mechanisms. Here we tested the hypothesis that two mechanisms of density dependence, parasitism and a shortage of refuges, jointly influence the strength of density-dependent mortality. We used mark recapture analysis to estimate mortality of the host species, the bridled goby {Coryphopterus glaucofraenum). Sixty-three marked gobies were infected with a copepod gill parasite {Pharodes tortugensis), and 188 were uninfected. We used the spatial scale at which gobies were clustered naturally (~4 m2 …

Assessing The Impact Of Non-Steroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs In The Hot Plate Test: An Alternative Model, Kate Koch May 2006

Assessing The Impact Of Non-Steroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs In The Hot Plate Test: An Alternative Model, Kate Koch

Psychology Honors Projects

The current paradigm for the hot plate pain test is problematic in several ways. It uses very limited behavioral criteria to define pain; traditionally, the hot plate pain test measures rats' latencies to performing a specified behavior (hind paw mouthing or jumping) when placed on a warm surface. Also, the hot plate test yields significant results for only certain analgesics. Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have an analgesic effect in humans. They do not, however, affect hot plate latencies in rats, unlike opioid analgesics, such as morphine. This study was intended to develop a new paradigm for using the hot plate …

Water Within Their World, Linda H. Plevyak And Amy Mayfield May 2006

Water Within Their World, Linda H. Plevyak And Amy Mayfield

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

With the fast pace of life today, many children do not have time to play outside and explore their neighborhoods. When outside, urban children often gravitate to the playground or basketball court not paying attention to the natural environment around them.

This fast pace of life doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Classroom teachers feel more pressure everyday to teach an increasing number of standards adopted by local districts. An unfortunate result of this is that science is too often the last content area to be fit into a busy week’s schedule. This means that more than ever we need …

Unexpected Diversity And Complexity Of The Guerrero Negro Hypersaline Microbial Mat, Ruth E. Ley, J. Kirk Harris, Joshua Wilcox, John R. Spear, Scott R. Miller, Brad M. Bebout, Julia A. Maresca, Donald A. Bryant, Mithcell L. Sogin, Norman R. Pace

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We applied nucleic acid-based molecular methods, combined with estimates of biomass (ATP), pigments, and microelectrode measurements of chemical gradients, to map microbial diversity vertically on a millimeter scale in a hypersaline microbial mat from Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico. To identify the constituents of the mat, small-subunit rRNA genes were amplified by PCR from community genomic DNA extracted from layers, cloned, and sequenced. Bacteria dominated the mat and displayed unexpected and unprecedented diversity. The majority (1,336) of the 1,586 bacterial 16S rRNA sequences generated were unique, representing 752 species (>= 97% rRNA sequence identity) in 42 of the …

What Use Is Half A Wing In The Ecology And Evolution Of Birds?, Kenneth P. Dial, Ross J. Randall, Terry R. Dial May 2006

What Use Is Half A Wing In The Ecology And Evolution Of Birds?, Kenneth P. Dial, Ross J. Randall, Terry R. Dial

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The use of incipient wings during ontogeny in living birds reveals not only the function of these developing forelimbs in growing birds’ survival but also the possible employment of protowings during transitional stages in the evolution of flight. When startled, juvenile galliform birds attempt aerial flight even though their wings are not fully developed. They also flap their incipient wings when they run up precipitous inclines, a behavior we have described as wing-assisted incline running (WAIR), and when they launch from elevated structures. The functional benefit of beating these protowings has only recently been evaluated. We report the first ontogenetic …

Fisheries Research Report No. 155 - Identification Of Western Australian Grey Nurse Shark Aggregation Sites., J. Chidlow, Daniel J. Gaughan, Rory Mcauley

Fisheries Research Reports

Final report to the Australian Government, Department of the Environment and Heritage

The first phase of this project involved a desktop study to broadly identify areas where Western Australian Grey Nurse Sharks potentially aggregate for further investigation with field surveys. These areas were identified from information obtained from commercial shark fishers, previously unpublished research data, as well as anecdotal reports of sightings or captures from recreational divers and fishers, professional dive stores, dive clubs and charter boat operators. A total of 25 survey areas were identified during the desktop study, 16 of which were in depths less than 30m and …

B Cells At The Interface Of Innate And Adaptive Immunity In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Requirements For The Activation Of Autoreactive B Cells In Autoimmune Disease, Sean Ryan Christensen May 2006

B Cells At The Interface Of Innate And Adaptive Immunity In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Requirements For The Activation Of Autoreactive B Cells In Autoimmune Disease, Sean Ryan Christensen

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Systemic autoimmune disease is characterized by loss of immunologic tolerance to a restricted set of self-nuclear antigens. These macromolecular complexes can be grouped into two categories: DNA-containing autoantigens such as chromatin, and RNA containing autoantigens such as Smith antigen (Sm) and related ribonucleoprotein complexes. Elucidating the mechanism for selective targeting of these molecules in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may provide clues to the etiology of disease. We hypothesized that Toll-like receptors (TLRs), germline-encoded pattern-recognition receptors of the innate immune system, could dictate target antigen specificity in SLE. Using genetic ablation of various TLRs in murine models of SLE, we have …

Turing Pattern Dynamics For Spatiotemporal Models With Growth And Curvature, Julijana Gjorgjieva May 2006

Turing Pattern Dynamics For Spatiotemporal Models With Growth And Curvature, Julijana Gjorgjieva

HMC Senior Theses

Turing theory plays an important role in real biological pattern formation problems, such as solid tumor growth and animal coat patterns. To understand how patterns form and develop over time due to growth, we consider spatiotemporal patterns, in particular Turing patterns, for reaction diffusion systems on growing surfaces with curvature. Of particular interest is isotropic growth of the sphere, where growth of the domain occurs in the same proportion in all directions. Applying a modified linear stability analysis and a separation of timescales argument, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for a diffusion driven instability of the steady state …

Mathematical Models Of Image Processing, Tyler Seacrest May 2006

Mathematical Models Of Image Processing, Tyler Seacrest

HMC Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to develop various advanced linear algebra techniques that apply to image processing. With the increasing use of computers and digital photography, being able to manipulate digital images efficiently and with greater freedom is extremely important. By applying the tools of linear algebra, we hope to improve the ability to process such images. We are especially interested in developing techniques that allow computers to manipulate images with the least amount of human guidance. In Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, we develop the basic definitions and linear algebra concepts that lay the foundation for later chapters. …

Cotton Top Farm: A Natural Horsemanship Training Facility, Nicole Schiermeyer May 2006

Cotton Top Farm: A Natural Horsemanship Training Facility, Nicole Schiermeyer

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

In order to meet the requirements of the masters of Architecture Terminal Project, I propose to design an equestrian training facility for Cotton Top Farms in St. Joseph, Missouri. The site is located in a rural area three miles outside of St. Joseph, Missouri, on a bluff which overlooks a flood plain. The area has been used for farming for over 150 years. The original farm was a dairy, 40 acres of which has been adapted into Cotton Top Farms, a small family horse farm. Cotton Top Farms was established in 1985 by the current owner functioning as a family …

Cather-Pound Redesign, Jason Seckman May 2006

Cather-Pound Redesign, Jason Seckman

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Cather Pound - Redesign addresses the redevelopment of the Cather Pound Residence Complex located on north 17th Street on the University of Nebraska, Lincoln campus. These upperclassmen dormitories were hastily built in the 1960’s during a period of rapid growth for the university. These corridor style dorms were originally designed for double occupancy, but are now more often used by only one student. As our student culture changes the university is building more popular suite and apartment style residences. The archaic nature of dense student housing that these new units are replacing, becomes more apparent, and thus a redesign of …
