Korean Environmental Regulations: Ready To Take On One Of The World's Largest Private Real Estate Development Projects?, Joon H. Kim
Washington International Law Journal
The South Korean government designated three new Free Economic Zones in an effort to become the financial and logistical hub of Northeast Asia. One of these zones, the Incheon Free Economic Zone (“IFEZ”), will encompass 209 square kilometers of completely new development on reclaimed land and is said to be the biggest real estate development project currently in the world. China started using economic zones much earlier in history and although China experienced economic benefits, it also experienced severe environmental degradation in its highly successful special economic zones. Similarly tremendous economic growth will result from the influx of foreign direct …

Genetically Modified Crops In The Philippines: Can Existing Biosafety Regulations Adequately Protect The Environment?, Christina L. Richmond
Washington International Law Journal
Global concern persists about the use of genetically modified crops (“GM crops”). This concern originates from the divergent perspectives of nations with a stake in either the production or consumption of GM crops. Proponents of GM crops in developing countries claim that the crops could increase food supply by improving plant resistance to pesticides, thereby alleviating the need for farmers to purchase chemicals that are frequently expensive or unavailable. However, many organizations and countries are hesitant or outright opposed to GM crops, particularly regarding their potentially undesirable ecological and agricultural consequences. As one of the first Asian nations to approve …
Gender Mainstreaming And Integration Of Women In Decision- Making: The Case Of Water Management In Samari-Nkwanta, Ghana, Nana Ama Serwah Poku Sam
Gender Mainstreaming And Integration Of Women In Decision- Making: The Case Of Water Management In Samari-Nkwanta, Ghana, Nana Ama Serwah Poku Sam
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
Water, as a natural resource, is a basic necessity of life. In recent years, it has been recognized that community participation, especially by women, is essential to the success of water and sanitation projects in poor communities of developing countries. This research therefore focused on an assessment of how the conscious consideration of gender issues has affected the outcomes of the Samari-Nkwanta Water and Sanitation Project (SWSP) in the South-western part of Ghana. The study revealed that the involvement of women and men from the initial stages of project to the end helps to enhance more equitable participation and responsibility sharing.

Helicopter Flight Operational Quality Assurance (Hfoqa): Development Of Hfoqa Analysis Software, Sergio Teixeira
Helicopter Flight Operational Quality Assurance (Hfoqa): Development Of Hfoqa Analysis Software, Sergio Teixeira
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA), or Flight Data Monitoring (FDM), has benefited flight safety in both fixed-wing and helicopter operations. The relative youth of FOQA programs has resulted in their minimal application among the helicopter fleets of the world; thus, Helicopter FOQA (HFOQA) has merited consolidation and expansion. This mixed methods design developed HFOQA analysis software via a blend of the qualitative data from helicopter and FOQA experts with quantitative data represented by a sample of de-identified digital flight data from 1,014 helicopter flights. Development of the software emphasized three domains of interest: (a) helicopter flight phases; (b) helicopter operational …

A Strategic Approach Developing An Interactive Multimedia Learning System For Young Learners (Learning Malay Proverb) / Zatul Saliza Saleh, Saleh Zatul Saliza
Student Works (2000-2009)
Research conducted by local linguistic shows that the grasp of Malay Proverbs among younger generation is deteriorating. This dissertation proposes a strategic approach to learn Malay proverbs through interactive multimedia learning system for young learners. This approach employs effective learning strategy that proves its usability to help young learners understand and remember better. The arrangement of how young learners' mind work reflect the stages of human cognition: immediate apprehension, abstract thinking and practice. The three stage are formulated into three step approach: knowing, understanding and usage. All these three stages are then used to create instructional objective, content and the …

Group Status And Criminal Defenses: Logical Relationship Or Marriage Of Convenience, Eugene R. Melhizer
Missouri Law Review
Section I provides a brief overview of the significance of group status generally and its traditional relevance and usage within the criminal justice system. This discussion places the novel, defense-oriented approach to group status in a proper historical and analytical context. Section II begins by sketching a generally accepted system of defenses and placing general defenses within this context. It next describes the proper understanding of justification and excuse, the two preeminent theories for exculpatory general defenses. This complicated and often-contentious area of law is exposited here only insofar as it is necessary to lay the groundwork for the critique …

Shifts In Agricultural Land Valuation In South Dakota: From Market-Based To Income Based Criteria, Tonya Hansen, Richard Shane, Larry Janssen
Shifts In Agricultural Land Valuation In South Dakota: From Market-Based To Income Based Criteria, Tonya Hansen, Richard Shane, Larry Janssen
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Agricultural land prices rise amidst increased demand from agricultural producers and individuals seeking land for recreational, speculative, or residential uses. Interest in changing South Dakota's method of valuing agricultural land from a market-based to an income-based approach surfaced and resurfaced in the late 1970s and 1990s, respectively. Using results from two studies, we describe differences in land market conditions between these time periods and summarize the state and county valuation shifts resulting from adopting an income valuation approach. Specifically, we report internal valuation shifts between crop and pasture landowners and external valuation shifts between agricultural landowners and nonagricultural property owners.

Growth In Literacy And Numeracy In The First Three Years Of School., Marion Meiers, Siek Toon Khoo, Ken Rowe, Andrew Stephanou, Prue Anderson, Kathy Nolan
ACER Research Monographs
This report describes the findings from the first three years of the ACER longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study (LLANS). The longitudinal study was established in 1999 in a context in which there was significant national interest in improving achievement in literacy and numeracy for all Australian children, and a particular interest in the development of foundational skills in the early years of school. A nation wide sample of 100 schools was selected in proportion to the population of each state and territory and ten students were randomly selected from each of these schools. This provided a cohort for LLANS of …

2005 (17th) Report Of The Nou Records Committee, Mark A. Brogie
Nebraska Bird Review
The functions and methods of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union (NOU) Records Committee are described in its bylaws (NOU Records Committee 1986). The committee's purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. "The Official List of the Birds of Nebraska" was first published in 1988 (NOU Records Committee 1988) and has been updated two times (NOU Records Committee 1997, 2004).
The "Official List" has been appended fifteen times: (Mollhoff 1989; Grenon 1990, 1991; Gubanyi 1996a, 1996b, 1996c; Brogie 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005; Jorgensen 2001, 2002, …

Nou 2006 107th Annual Meeting At Ponca State Park
Nebraska Bird Review
The 107th Annual Meeting of the NOD was held in the new Missouri River Resource and Education Center in Ponca State Park on May 19-21. Although the weather ranged from hot and windy on Friday to steady rain on Saturday morning to cool and breezy on Sunday, the 80+ attendees accumulated a list of 159 species. Warbler diversity was disappointing, but shorebirds were abundant.
On Friday evening, a program on the Galapagos Islands was presented by Dr. Paul Johnsgard, Linda Brown, Dr. Josef Kren and Allison Johnson. Each of the four recounted an aspect of their 2005 trip to the …

A Book-Collector's Guide To Roger Tory Peterson, Paul A. Johnsgard
Nebraska Bird Review
One of the major disappointments of my youth was that I grew up without access to a real field guide to birds. My early years were spent in a small North Dakota village that lacked a library, and my only reference book on birds was a badly-tattered copy of a badly-illustrated 1912 book that my mother had grown up with, Chester A. Reed's Birds of Eastern North America. However, in 1939 a very kind aunt gave me a still-cherished copy of the Macmillan edition of Audubon's Birds of America as a Christmas present. With its hundreds of wonderful color …

Spring Field Report, March-May 2006, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
Introduction
As many of you know, the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) has changed some generic names and rearranged the taxonomic order for shortbirds in the expanded genus Tringa and for the terns. This Spring Report uses the new taxonomic order.
Observers (thank you, I think!) submitted a huge amount of data that I distilled for this report; I entered more than 3,500 sightings into my database, which allows for a comprehensive overview of what birds were doing this spring.
As has been the case the last few years, there were several record or near-record early arrival dates, some requiring documentation …

Christmas Bird Counts For North Dakota 2005, Robert N. Randall
Christmas Bird Counts For North Dakota 2005, Robert N. Randall
The Prairie Naturalist
Twenty areas were included in the North Dakota Christmas Bird Counts. One area that had been included during the previous four years was canceJled due to extreme icy conditions and could not be rescheduled.
There were 216 observers in the field and 41 additional participants counting the birds, which visited their feeders. The field observers were out for about 522.25 hours, 109.75 on foot and 412.5 in cars. Feeder watchers added 97.5 hours to the total. The field observers covered 121.2 miles on foot and 5,648.7 miles in vehicles. Some additional effort was spent in six of the areas where …

Brood Break-Up And Juvenile Dispersal Of Lesser Prairie-Chicken In Kansas, James C. Pitman, Brent E. Jamison, Christian A. Hagen, Robert J. Robel, Roger D. Applegate
The Prairie Naturalist
Natal dispersal is critical for genetic interchange between subpopulations of birds and little is known about the timing and extent of lesser prairiechicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) dispersal movements. We monitored movements of 51 transmitter-equipped female lesser prairie-chicken known to have hatched a nest. Average minimum daily brood movements differed (t = -2.94, df = 829, P < 0.01) between the early (273 m; 0 to 14 days post-hatch) and late (312 m; 15 to 60 days post-hatch) brood rearing periods. We captured 71 juvenile lesser prairie-chicken from 10 broods at 3 to 11 days post-hatch and marked them with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags. We subsequently captured 41 chicks from 20 different broods and fitted them with necklace-style transmitters. Transmitter- equipped brood hens and individual chicks were monitored daily and the average date of brood break-up was September 13 (85 to 128 days post-hatch). Both males and females exhibited bimodal dispersal movements in the fall and spring. Autumn dispersal movements peaked between late October and early November for both sexes. Spring dispersal movement of males peaked during late February. Female dispersal movements in the spring peaked in late March and were much more extensive than fall dispersal movements. Natal dispersal distance for all marked males averaged 1.4 km (SE= 0.2, n = 9). The approximate dispersal distances of three transmitter-equipped females ranged from 1.5 to 26.3 km. Because of greater dispersal distances, females will contribute more to genetic exchanges between fragmented subpopulations. To ensure genetic connectivity, we recommend that a distance of less …
Call Recognition In Brown Jays (Cyanocorax Morio), June 2006, Lisa Michi
Call Recognition In Brown Jays (Cyanocorax Morio), June 2006, Lisa Michi
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Call recognition in birds is important so energy and time are not wasted. Many studies have used heterospecific calls that were evolutionarily distant from the species being tested to show that recognition was possible. This study looked at species recognition of both an evolutionary distant species (common potoo, Nyctibius griseus: Nyctibiidae) and of a species in the same family (magpie jay, Calocitta formosa: Corvidae) in brown jays (Cyanocorax morio: Corvidae). Three different calls (brown jay, magpie jay, and common potoo) were played in ten different territories of brown jays in the Monteverde area during the dry season. Results suggested that …
