Seed Preference In The Central American Agouti, Dasyprocta Punctata, June 2006, Kristen Coogan
Seed Preference In The Central American Agouti, Dasyprocta Punctata, June 2006, Kristen Coogan
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Scatter-hoarding animals in the tropics typically depend on a cached supply of reserves when food is scarce. The Optimal Foraging Theory seeks to explain the behaviors these organisms exhibit upon prey selection. It is important for these scatter-hoarding animals to choose the most beneficial food item that will increase their energy intake. Central American agouties (Dasyprocta puncata) were presented with two differently sized seed species, the water apple (Syzygium malaccense) and the peach palm (Bactris gasipaes). A total of 400 flagged seeds were used, 200 of each species in groups of 20 seeds per species, over a 14 day period …

Reproductive Decisions Of Pollinator (Agaonidae) And Non-Pollinator (Torymidae) Fig Wasps Of Ficus Pertusa (Moraceae), June 2006, Kevin J. Loope
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Ficus pertusa (Moraceae), a common Neotropical fig, is host to one pollinating (Agaonidae) and three nonpollinating (Torymidae) fig wasps. Bronstein (1991) addressed interspecies interactions between these species and suggested they may be partitioning resources within individual fig inflorescences (syconia) due to a forced association and observed morphological differences. I tested whether or not these wasps’ partition oviposition sites within a fig based upon distance from the syconium wall. Also, these wasps exhibit different reproductive strategies that vary the degree of local mate competition (LMC) between brothers for mates. LMC and inbreeding have been used to explain female-biased sex ratios (Harre …

Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids In Néctar: Deterrents To Generalist Pollinators And Nectar Robbers, June 2006, Arden G. Piland
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are toxic chemicals found in multiple plant families. Eight experiments were conducted in Gardens 2 and 3 of the Monteverde Butterfly Garden to examine if PAs function as deterrents to generalist Heliconiine (Nymphalidae: Heliconiinae) butterflies and ant nectar thieves. To examine if Heliconiine butterflies were deterred by PAs in nectar, cut and naturally growing flowers were manipulated to contain either a 20% sucrose solution, a solution containing 20% sucrose and PAs, a solution made with 20% sucrose and plant material that did not contain PAs, or were flushed with water to produce an “empty” effect. Heliconiine visits …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2005-2006, Bruce B. Johnson, Ben Blomendahl, Kyle Overturf
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports
Nebraska’s agricultural land values rose an average of 9.6 percent during the year ending February 1, 2006. This brought the state’s average all-land value to over $1,000 per acre and the total worth of agricultural real estate to more than $45 billion.
In the wake of a series of generally favorable income years for most of the state’s agricultural sector, land values have advanced rather sharply over the past three years – particularly in the eastern third of the state. The three eastern districts have experienced value increases of 40 percent or more since February 2003.
In contrast to these …

Bufo Marinus (Amphibian)
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
B. marinus is a heavily built toad with short legs. It can grow upto 15 cm long sometimes. Fingers lack webbing, but the toes are heavily webbed. Adults have a rough, warty skin, colored tan, brown or dark brown, dull green or black. The tympanum is distinct, about one half to two thirds the size of the eye. Venom glands are widely distributed around the surface of the skin, but can also be aggregated together to form large parotoid glands, found on each shoulder. these glands are able to ooze venom. (Gautherot, 2000) Eggs are laid in long strands. Tadpoles …

Children's questions may reveal a great deal about the characteristics of objects they consider to be conceptually important. Thirty-two preschool children were given opportunities to ask questions about unfamiliar artifacts and animals. The children asked ambiguous questions such as “What is it?” about artifacts and animals alike. However, they were more likely to ask about the functions of artifacts, but about category membership, food choices, and typical locations of animals. They never asked questions about either artifacts or animals that would be considered inappropriate by adults. The results indicate that children hold different expectations about the types of information important …

PREP Reports & Publications
The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) Technical Assistance Program provides financial assistance to communities for land conservation planning and protection, wetlands protection, and stormwater management in coastal New Hampshire. The Greenland Planning Board applied for and received support to develop stewardship plans for town-owned lands (see proposal in Appendix A). The Town is working on a Master Plan update, as well as considering the expenditure of a $2 million bond for land acquisition. This project enables the Town to assess existing town lands for natural resource values and stewardship needs and identify other areas within Town as conservation priorities. The …
The Effects Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation On Indirect Indicators Of Muscle Damage And Performance, Beau K. Greer
The Effects Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation On Indirect Indicators Of Muscle Damage And Performance, Beau K. Greer
All PTHMS Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine whether branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation attenuates indirect indicators of muscle damage, lowers ratings of perceived exertion, and improves aerobic performance as compared to an isocaloric, carbohydrate (CHO) beverage or a non-caloric placebo beverage. Nine, untrained males (VO2 max 36.26 2.23 ml/kg/min) performed three 90-minute cycling bouts at 55% VO2 max followed by a 15-minute time trial. Metabolic data was collected every 15 minutes during the steady-state ride, and indirect muscle damage markers were assessed pre, post, 4-hours, 24-hours, and 48-hours post-exercise. Pre and post-exercise concentrations of the BCAA and glucose were …

Mobs, Militias, And Magistrates: Popular Constitutionalism And The Whiskey Rebellion, Saul Cornell
Mobs, Militias, And Magistrates: Popular Constitutionalism And The Whiskey Rebellion, Saul Cornell
Chicago-Kent Law Review
It is impossible to understand the Constitutional dynamics of the early Republic without some appreciation for the manifold ways popular constitutionalism shaped these early debates. Popular constitutionalism in the early republic encompassed an enormous spectrum of legal strategies. The peaceful efforts of the Democratic-Republican Societies to influence the course of Federalist policy stood at one pole, while mob action stood at the other. Even more important than either of these modalities of popular constitutionalism were the efforts of local communities and states to use the militia as check on federal power.

Origin And Health Impacts Of Emissions Of Toxic By-Products And Fine Particles From Combustion And Thermal Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes And Materials, Stephania A. Cormier, Slawo Lomnicki, Wayne Backes, Barry Dellinger
Faculty Publications
High-temperature, controlled incineration and thermal treatment of contaminated soils, sediments, and wastes at Superfund sites are often preferred methods of remediation of contaminated sites under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 and related legislation. Although these methods may be executed safely, formation of toxic combustion or reaction by-products is still a cause of concern. Emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs), including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans; and toxic metals (e.g., chromium VI) have historically been the focus of combustion and health effects research. However, fine particulate matter (PM) and ultrafine PM, which have been …

Tumor-associated eosinophilia has been observed in numerous human cancers and several tumor models in animals; however, the details surrounding this eosinophilia remain largely undefined and anecdotal. We used a B16-F10 melanoma cell injection model to demonstrate that eosinophil infiltration of tumors occurred from the earliest palpable stages with significant accumulations only in the necrotic and capsule regions. Furthermore, the presence of diffuse extracellular matrix staining for eosinophil major basic protein was restricted to the necrotic areas of tumors, indicating that eosinophil degranulation was limited to this region. Antibody-mediated depletion of CD4+ T cells and adoptive transfer of eosinophils suggested, respectively, …

Morphologic And Ontogenetic Patterns In Elasmosaur Neck Length, With Comments On The Taxonomic Utility Of Neck Length Variables, F. Robin O’Keefe, Norton Hiller
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
Elasmosaur cervical vertebrae are common fossils, but their taxonomic utility is limited due to a lack of understanding concerning their shape within and among taxa. In this paper, we analyze data from complete elasmosaur necks in an attempt to quantify and understand the variation in centrum dimensions. In accord with previous studies, variation in cervical centrum shape is found to stem from at least three sources: ontogeny, intracolumn variation, and intercolumn or taxonomic variation. Ontogenetic variability seems reminiscent of that seen in Cryptoclidus, with an overall positive allometry in the length of all centra that is accentuated in the mid-cervical …

Faculty Publications
Most birds develop brood patches before incubation; epidermis and dermis in the brood patch region thicken, and the dermal connective tissue becomes increasingly vascularized and infiltrated by leukocytes. However, current dogma states that waterfowl incubate without modifications of skin within the brood patch region. The incubation periods of lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens; hereafter called snow geese) and Ross's geese (C. rossii) are 2-6 days shorter than those of other goose species; only females incubate. Thus, we hypothesized that such short incubation periods would require fully developed brood patches for sufficient heat transfer from incubating parents to eggs. We …
Systematics And Historical Biogeography Of Greater Antillean Cichlidae, Prosanta Chakrabarty
Systematics And Historical Biogeography Of Greater Antillean Cichlidae, Prosanta Chakrabarty
Faculty Publications
A molecular phylogenetic analysis recovers a pattern consistent with a drift vicariance scenario for the origin of Greater Antillean cichlids. This phylogeny, based on mitochondrial and nuclear genes, reveals that clades on different geographic regions diverged concurrently with the geological separation of these areas. Middle America was initially colonized by South American cichlids in the Cretaceous, most probably through the Cretaceous Island Arc. The separation of Greater Antillean cichlids and their mainland Middle American relatives was caused by a drift vicariance event that took place when the islands became separated from Yucatan in the Eocene. Greater Antillean cichlids are monophyletic …
