Michel Henry's Phenomenology Of Aesthetic Experience, Jeremy H. Smith Jun 2006

Michel Henry's Phenomenology Of Aesthetic Experience, Jeremy H. Smith

English Faculty Scholarship

In 'Voir l'invisible' Michel Henry applies his philosophy of autoaffection to the realm of aesthetics. Henry claims that autoaffection, as nonobjective experience, is essential not only to self-experience, but also to the experience of objects and their qualities. On the basis of an examination of Henry's aesthetic theory in the light of Husserl's analysis of our experience of visible objects, I conclude that revisions are required in both Husserl's and Henry's approaches: Husserl's noema must be considered to be a lived-through experience, and nonobjective lived-through experience must be recognized as primordial evidence; Henry's claim that …

Project Title: Sustainable Adaptations To Drought And Climate Variability In Agricultural Production Systems Across Nebraska, Cody L. Knutson, Michael J. Hayes, Robert K. Hitchcock, Jeffrey Peake, Martin Kleinschmit Jun 2006

Project Title: Sustainable Adaptations To Drought And Climate Variability In Agricultural Production Systems Across Nebraska, Cody L. Knutson, Michael J. Hayes, Robert K. Hitchcock, Jeffrey Peake, Martin Kleinschmit

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Drought is a normal part of Nebraska’s climate. It is also the leading cause of monetary disaster loss in the United States. FEMA (1995) has estimated that U.S. drought losses average $6-8 billion dollars per year. A majority of these losses are incurred in the agricultural sector. Nebraska’s losses alone topped $1.2 billion in 2002 (AP 2003).

To enhance viable operations in this variable climate, many Nebraska farmers and ranchers have begun making the transition to agricultural practices that fall into the realm of sustainable agriculture. Sustainability has been increasingly stressed as essential for creating more resilient systems and reducing …

Factors Influencing Soil Invertebrate Communities In Riparian Grasslands Of The Central Platte River Floodplain, Craig A. Davis, Jane E. Austin, Deborah A. Buhl Jun 2006

Factors Influencing Soil Invertebrate Communities In Riparian Grasslands Of The Central Platte River Floodplain, Craig A. Davis, Jane E. Austin, Deborah A. Buhl

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

In the Platte River Valley of central Nebraska, USA, riparian grasslands (also known as wet meadows) have been severely impacted by a reduction in river flows, causing lower ground-water levels and altered seasonal hydroperiods. The potential impacts of these hydrologic changes, as well as the environmental factors that influence wet meadow soil invertebrate communities, are not well understood. An understanding of the ecological processes that influence these invertebrate communities is crucial for maintaining and restoring wet meadows along the Platte River. Our objectives were to describe the soil invertebrate community of wet meadows throughout the growing season and to examine …

Competitive Metagenomic Dna Hybridization Identifies Host-Specific Microbial Genetic Markers In Cow Fecal Samples, Orin C. Shanks, Jorge W. Santo Domingo, Regina Lamendella, Catherine A. Kelty, James E. Graham Jun 2006

Competitive Metagenomic Dna Hybridization Identifies Host-Specific Microbial Genetic Markers In Cow Fecal Samples, Orin C. Shanks, Jorge W. Santo Domingo, Regina Lamendella, Catherine A. Kelty, James E. Graham

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Several PCR methods have recently been developed to identify fecal contamination in surface waters. In all cases, researchers have relied on one gene or one microorganism for selection of host-specific markers. Here we describe the application of a genome fragment enrichment (GFE) method to identify host-specific genetic markers from fecal microbial community DNA. As a proof of concept, bovine fecal DNA was challenged against a porcine fecal DNA background to select for bovine-specific DNA sequences. Bioinformatic analyses of 380 bovine enriched metagenomic sequences indicated a preponderance of Bacteroidales-like regions predicted to encode membrane-associated and secreted proteins. Oligonucleotide primers capable …

Lists Of Potential Hydrophytes For The United States: A Regional Review And Their Use In Wetland Identification, Ralph W. Tiner Jun 2006

Lists Of Potential Hydrophytes For The United States: A Regional Review And Their Use In Wetland Identification, Ralph W. Tiner

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The U.S. federal government has developed lists of plant species that occur in wetlands. The initial purpose of these lists was to enumerate plants that grow in wetlands and that could be used to identify wetlands according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s wetland classification system. The first list was generated in 1976 by the Service, and since that time, the list has undergone several iterations as more information was reviewed or became available through field investigations and scientific research. Two lists are currently published and available for use: a 1988 list and a 1996 draft list. The latter …

Education Over The Internet, W. Daniel Edge Jun 2006

Education Over The Internet, W. Daniel Edge

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

The global network of computers, called the Internet, offers special challenges and opportunities to educators for delivering educational programs. The opportunity of education over the Internet has been recognized almost since an interconnected network of computers was conceived. However, access to the Internet by the general public has been low; in 1995 only 4-6% of the people in the U.S. have access. Nevertheless, access has been expanding rapidly, and with the advent of the $500 network computer, is expected to increase substantially over the next few years. Information available over the Internet is also expanding rapidly. In March 1996, the …

Restrictions For Harvesting Small Grain Forages After Herbicide Applications, Mike Moechnig, Darrell Deneke Jun 2006

Restrictions For Harvesting Small Grain Forages After Herbicide Applications, Mike Moechnig, Darrell Deneke

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

After unforeseen circumstances, such as an extreme drought or an emergency need for forages, you may be considering the option to harvest small grains for forage or hay. However, the decision to utilize a small grain crop for forage may be limited by restrictions associated with herbicides already applied. These restrictions may protect the health of livestock or minimize human exposure to the presence of herbicide residues in meat or milk. In some cases, the restrictions are established as a security measure due to a lack of data regarding the persistence of herbicide residues in animals.

Lockhart Catchment Appraisal 2005, Susan Murphy-White, P Leoni

Resource management technical reports

The Lockhart Catchment is the largest subcatchment of the Avon River Basin covering just over 3.56 million hectares, including 15 Shires running from Quairading and Bruce Rock in the north to Pingrup and Lake King in the south. This document aims to give the reader a starting point from which to further assess larger scale areas of the catchment for the purpose of planning to reverse and improve land degradation and sustainable farming in Western Australia.

Aging And Associative And Inductive Reasoning Processes In Discrimination Learning, Courtney Ortz Jun 2006

Aging And Associative And Inductive Reasoning Processes In Discrimination Learning, Courtney Ortz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate how associative and inductive reasoning processes develop over trials in feature positive (FP) and feature negative (FN) discrimination learning. Younger and older adults completed initial and transfer tasks with either consistent or inconsistent transfer. Participants articulated a rule on every trial. The measure of discrimination learning was the number of trials it took participants to articulate the exact rule. In the initial task, older adults articulated the rule more slowly than younger adults in FP discrimination and took marginally more trials to articulate the rule in FN discrimination than younger adults. Age …
