Utilization Of Deionized Water And Non-Meat Adjuncts To Combat Quality Issues In Boneless Cured Ham Associated With Using Pale Raw Material, Jonathan Wilbourn

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of deionized water and PSE pork percentage on the quality of smoked deli ham and retorted pouched ham with and without non-meat adjuncts were evaluated. Product quality was determined through evaluation of water holding capacity, cooked color, protein-protein bind, and sensory quality. A randomized complete block design with either three or four replications was utilized to test treatment effects in three separate experiments. The retorting process showed the potential to reduce the effect of PSE meat on color that is present in raw material and smoked deli ham. In retorted ham, modified food starch and soy protein concentrate …

The Right To Swing? , Milan Markovic

ExpressO

An analysis of the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in Labaye v. the Queen that held that the activities occurring in a Montral swingers club could not be classified as indecent. I posit that Labaye is best understood as concerning sexual liberty (as described in Lawrence v. Texas and other cases) and not as an indecency case.

Modern Public Trust Principles: Recognizing Rights And Integrating Standards, Alexandra B. Klass Aug 2006

Modern Public Trust Principles: Recognizing Rights And Integrating Standards, Alexandra B. Klass

ExpressO

The public trust doctrine has a long history from its beginnings as an obligation on states to hold lands submerged under navigable waters in trust for the public, to its resurgence in the 1970s as a protector of natural resources, to its influence on state statutory and constitutional law as the public embraced environmental protection principles. However, many have argued that the public trust doctrine has not lived up to its potential as a major player in environmental and natural resources law. This article proposes a new framework for the public trust doctrine as a state tool for environmental protection …

Reef Structure Alternatives For Restoration Of Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations In New Hampshire, Raymond E. Grizzle, David M. Burdick, Jennifer Greene, Holly Abeels, Mark Capone Aug 2006

Reef Structure Alternatives For Restoration Of Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations In New Hampshire, Raymond E. Grizzle, David M. Burdick, Jennifer Greene, Holly Abeels, Mark Capone

PREP Reports & Publications

Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) populations in New Hampshire have experienced severe declines since the 1990s, and restoration of oyster populations has been a major goal for New Hampshire management agencies. The most widely used technique in recent years in New Hampshire has been "spat seeding" which involves setting larvae from disease-resistant and/or fast-growth broodstock onto cultch material in large shore-based tanks, then distributing the spat attached to cultch onto the bottom to initiate reef restoration. This approach has the dual potential of providing direct population enhancement as well as introduction to the local gene pool of disease-resistance and/or fast-growth potential. …

Soil Microbial Biomass Relationships With Organic Matter Fractions In A Nebraska Corn Field Mapped Using Apparent Electrical Conductivity, Maria S. Grigera, Rhae A. Drijber, Kent M. Eskridge, Brian J. Wienhold Aug 2006

Soil Microbial Biomass Relationships With Organic Matter Fractions In A Nebraska Corn Field Mapped Using Apparent Electrical Conductivity, Maria S. Grigera, Rhae A. Drijber, Kent M. Eskridge, Brian J. Wienhold

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soils exhibit spatial variability in their properties. One approach for delineating field-scale variability involves mapping the variation in apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the physical and chemical soil characteristics that define ECa classification and the association of specific soil microbiological communities with these soil properties. In May 2003, ECa was measured in a field in Buffalo County, Nebraska, and processed to create four ECa zones based on ranges of horizontal and vertical ECa measurements using unsupervised classification. Soil properties (0–90 cm) that showed higher correlations with vertical ECa included total C ( …

Thomas Aquinas And The Metaphysics Of Law, William S. Brewbaker Aug 2006

Thomas Aquinas And The Metaphysics Of Law, William S. Brewbaker

ExpressO

Despite modernity’s longstanding aversion to metaphysics, legal scholars are increasingly questioning whether law can be understood in isolation from wider questions about the nature of reality. This paper examines perhaps the most famous of metaphysical legal texts– Thomas Aquinas’ still-widely-read Treatise on Law-- with a view toward tracing the influence of Thomas’ metaphysical presuppositions.

This article shows that Thomas’ account of human law cannot be fully understood apart from his metaphysics. Attention to Thomas’ hierarchical view of reality exposes tensions between Thomas’ “top-down” account of law and his sophisticated “bottom-up” observations. For example, Thomas grounds human law’s authority in its …

Limitations Of Receiver/Data Loggers For Monitoring Radiocollared Animals, Stewart W. Breck, Nathan Lance, Jean Bourassa Aug 2006

Limitations Of Receiver/Data Loggers For Monitoring Radiocollared Animals, Stewart W. Breck, Nathan Lance, Jean Bourassa

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We evaluated the effectiveness of receiver/data loggers for monitoring the presence/absence of radiocollared animals in discrete areas. Our primary objective was to determine how variation in transmitter signal strength affected the size of area being monitored. This information will help researchers better manage the uncertainty related to determining an animal’s location relative to a discrete boundary. We used an adjustable attenuator to measure signal strength to determine the minimum number of decibels (dB) required to eliminate detection of a radio signal by receiver/data loggers. We quantified how dB varied depending upon orientation of the transmitter on the animal and distance …

Information Content Of Coyote Barks Howls, Brian R. Mitchell, Maja M. Makagon, Michael M. Jaeger, Reginald H. Barrett

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The information content of coyote (Canis latrans) vocalizations is poorly understood, but has important implications for understanding coyote behavior. Coyotes probably use information present in barks or howls to recognize individuals, but the presence of individually-specific information has not bean demonstrated. We found that coyote barks and howls contained individually specific characteristics: discriminant analysis correctly classified barks of five coyotes 69% of the time and howls of six coyotes 83% of the time. We also investigated the stability of vocalization characteristics at multiple distances from the source. Recordings were played back and re-recorded at 10 m, 600m, and …

Risk Aversion And Rights Accretion In Intellectual Property Law, James Gibson Aug 2006

Risk Aversion And Rights Accretion In Intellectual Property Law, James Gibson

ExpressO

Intellectual property’s road to hell is paved with good intentions. Because liability is difficult to predict, intellectual property users often seek licenses even when proceeding without one might be permissible. Yet because the existence (vel non) of licensing markets plays a key role in determining the breadth of rights, these seemingly sensible licensing decisions eventually feed back into doctrine; the licensing itself becomes proof that the entitlement covers the use. Over time, then, public privilege recedes and rights expand, moving intellectual property’s ubiquitous gray areas into what used to be virgin territory--where risk aversion again creates licensing markets, which cause …

Traditional Preparations And Uses Of Maize In Nigeria, A. A. Abdulrahaman, Olatunji Matthew Kolawole Aug 2006

Traditional Preparations And Uses Of Maize In Nigeria, A. A. Abdulrahaman, Olatunji Matthew Kolawole

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Maize is a cereal plant that produces grains that can be cooked, roasted, fried, ground, pounded or crushed to prepare various food items like pap, ‘tuwo’, ‘gwate’, ‘donkunu’ and host of others. All these food types are readily available in various parts of Nigeria among different ethnic groups, notably among which are Yorubas, Hausas, Ibos, Ibiras, Ishas, Binis, Efiks, Yalas etc. Preparations and uses of the maize grains varied from group to group, though at time with some similarities. Apart from food, maize is also useful as medicines and as raw materials for industries. About 28 food items or dishes …

Studies On The Efficacy Of Bridelia Ferruginea Benth. Bark Extract In Reducing The Coliform Load And Bod Of Domestic Wastewater, Olatunji Matthew Kolawole Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The efficacy of Bridelia ferruginea bark extract in reducing the coliform load and BOD of wastewater was investigated. Phytochemical screening and chromatographic techniques revealed the bark to contain five major compounds; polyphenols, steroids, Saponins, Tannins terpenoids and alkaloids. Comparative studies in the reduction of coliform load using varying concentrations (0.5% w/v, 1.0% w/v, 2.5% w/v, and 5.0% w/v) with Alum and Ferric chloride showed that the bark extract was effective. The optimum dose achieved was 2.5% w/v with a minimum of 24 hours contact time. The coliform loads were reduced by 63% after 24 hours when the extract was used …

Mansfield Ct: Planning A New Village Center, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer Aug 2006

Mansfield Ct: Planning A New Village Center, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer

Planning

The case follows the development of a plan for a new village center in Storrs, the central village of Mansfield, Connecticut. A process that was transparent and inclusive of the community members yielded a plan that gained the approval of the Town, the landowner (the University of Connecticut), and the citizenry. The process relied on the mending of fences, the leadership of key participants, and an innovative strategy that included development of a nonprofit corporation and creative use of grant money. While zoning changes are still in the works, the first stage of building goes forward.

Oy Canada! Trade's Non-Solution To "The Problem" Of U.S. Drug Prices, Daniel Gilman Aug 2006

Oy Canada! Trade's Non-Solution To "The Problem" Of U.S. Drug Prices, Daniel Gilman

Faculty Scholarship

Price disparities—price “differentiation” or “discrimination”—in pharmaceuticals markets have, in recent years, been the subject of much discussion. Price sensitivity should come as no surprise: Medicines play an increasingly important role in healthcare, while pharmaceuticals prices continue to rise. When prices vary greatly within markets or between neighboring markets, the pressure towards arbitrage is clear. This paper considers the question whether the re-importation of medicines from Canada or the EU is well advised and argues that it is not. First, we might reasonably question the extent to which we wish, as a matter of policy, to manage pharmaceuticals pricing; among other …

Harry Potter And The Fixation Requirement: An Attempt At Applying The U.S. Copyright Act Of 1976 To J.K. Rowling's World Of Witchcraft And Wizardry, Yvette Joy Liebesman Aug 2006

Harry Potter And The Fixation Requirement: An Attempt At Applying The U.S. Copyright Act Of 1976 To J.K. Rowling's World Of Witchcraft And Wizardry, Yvette Joy Liebesman

Georgetown Law Student Series

In the Harry Potter universe, images in photographs and paintings are magically animated. Supposing these items exist, one could posit whether they qualify for copyright protection under current United States law; that is, whether works such as the paintings that hang at Hogwarts meet the subject matter and fixation requirements under the Copyright Act of 1976. The qualifications for protection of works created with such a new technology may already be adequately addressed under the current law. If so, we should question whether legislation should be created to regulate a technology, or protect associated rights, that is either in its …
