Comparing The Effects Of Various Estrogen Replacement Paradigms On Working Memory Performance In The Radial-Arm Maze, Johannes Bohacek Aug 2006

Comparing The Effects Of Various Estrogen Replacement Paradigms On Working Memory Performance In The Radial-Arm Maze, Johannes Bohacek

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current study compared the impact of different paradigms of estradiol replacement on working memory performance. In adult ovariectomized rats, a vehicle-treated control group (n=10) was compared to three estradiol replacement paradigms: 1) continuous delivery via Silastic capsules (n=8); 2) cyclic replacement via two 10 ìg injections on two out of every four days (n=10); 3) cyclic replacement via one 2 ìg injection every four days (n=10). While treatment continued, animals were tested over 24 days in the 8-arm radial maze. After this acquisition period, various delay times were introduced between 4th and 5th arm choices. Treatments had no effects …

Renegotiating Democracy In Public Space, Anna Brand Aug 2006

Renegotiating Democracy In Public Space, Anna Brand

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Dissent is intricately linked to the qualities of public space. While the First Amendment protects dissent, historical legal and social mechanisms have regulated protest and its relationship with public space. In the latter half of the twentieth century, a rigorous legal framework has emerged to both protect and regulate protest. Yet free speech rights are highly contested. The media are complicit in relating protesters to violence. This perception has been thoroughly constructed in the media since the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle in 1999. The September 11th terrorist attacks have further amplified concerns for security in public spaces. The …

Analysis Of A Turbopiston Pump, Kiranmayi Venkata Sristy Aug 2006

Analysis Of A Turbopiston Pump, Kiranmayi Venkata Sristy

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An innovative pump, TurboPiston Pump, has been invented to incorporate the merits of centrifugal, axial, and positive displacement pumps. The TurboPiston pump is designed to deliver large flow rates at very high pressure of up to 1000 psia. To improve the original design, an understanding of flow behavior inside the pump is needed. Therefore, this thesis focuses on simulating the flow field inside the pump and studying its performance. This study includes modeling the pump using a commercial CAD package, GAMBIT and a 3-D computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver, FLUENT. The calculation employs both the simplified steady moving frame and …

Adrift, Alexis Wiggins Aug 2006

Adrift, Alexis Wiggins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Adrift is a novel about Telemaka Miller, a beautiful young woman who cannot say no to men as a result of her father's abandoning her when she was young. Loosely based on Homer's epic poem The Odyssey (in which Odysseus' son, Telemakos, sets out to look for his lost father), the novel traces Telemaka's search for her father through an endless string of lovers. The novel opens in 2005, when Telemaka is in her late twenties, and works its way backward through her twenties, teens, and adolescence to the moment in her childhood when her father left the family.

Looting, Law, And Lawlessness, Stuart Green Aug 2006

Looting, Law, And Lawlessness, Stuart Green

ExpressO

As recent incidents in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and other natural and man-made disasters have illustrated, the moral content of looting spans an extraordinarily wide continuum: At one end are predatory and exploitative acts that seem deserving of even greater punishment than ordinary acts of burglary and larceny. At the other end are cases of necessity, involving otherwise law-abiding citizens who, as a result of forces beyond their control, find themselves hungry and exposed to the elements. In between these two poles lies a wide range of conduct that often involves impoverished and alienated citizens living on the edges …

Pre-Conference Proceedings Of The Focus Symposium On Advances In Intelligent Software Systems, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

A very powerful new type of information systems technology is rapidly emerging, driven by government and commercial needs for expert decision-support and knowledge management. One very apparent result of this technology is increasingly intelligent software systems. Computer programs with collaborative agents that are capable of automatically reasoning about data and the dynamic changes in data that occur in real world decision-making situations are already in use by the military and are now transitioning to the commercial world.

The Mitogenic Function Of Hepatitis B Virus X Protein Resides Within Amino Acids 51 To 140 And Is Modulated By N- And C-Terminal Regulatory Regions, H Li, C Y. Chi, S Lee, O M. Andrisani Aug 2006

The Mitogenic Function Of Hepatitis B Virus X Protein Resides Within Amino Acids 51 To 140 And Is Modulated By N- And C-Terminal Regulatory Regions, H Li, C Y. Chi, S Lee, O M. Andrisani

Oncological Sciences Center Publications

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) X protein (pX) is implicated in hepatocarcinogenesis by an unknown mechanism. pX variants encoded by HBV genomes found integrated in genomic DNA from liver tumors of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) generally lack amino acids 134 to 154. Since deregulation of mitogenic pathways is linked to oncogenic transformation, herein we define the pX region required for mitogenic pathway activation. A series of pX deletions was used to construct tetracycline-regulated pX-expressing cell lines. The activation of the mitogenic pathways by these pX deletions expressed in the constructed cell lines was measured by transient transreporter assays, effects …

Ferritin: Mechanistic Studies And Electron Transfer Properties, Bo Zhang Aug 2006

Ferritin: Mechanistic Studies And Electron Transfer Properties, Bo Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Ferritins are ubiquitous iron storage proteins in living systems. Although much is known about the iron deposition process in ferritin and a mechanism has been developed, several important issues still remain unknown. One lingering question is the less than stoichiometric quantities of hydrogen peroxide detected in previous studies on animal ferritins. Extensive experimental data on identifying the species in competition for peroxide equivalents point to a surprising conclusion that H2O2 generated in the ferroxidase reaction is consumed by amine buffers that are commonly employed in in vitro ferritin studies, while non-nitrogen containing buffers, such as acetate, phosphate, and carbonate, do …

Biology Faculty Articles

Background: With the completion of the genome sequence for rice (Oryza sativa L.), the focus of rice genomics research has shifted to the comparison of the rice genome with genomes of other species for gene cloning, breeding, and evolutionary studies. The genus Oryza includes 23 species that shared a common ancestor 8–10 million years ago making this an ideal model for investigations into the processes underlying domestication, as many of the Oryza species are still undergoing domestication. This study integrates high-throughput, hybridization-based markers with BAC end sequence and fingerprint data to construct physical maps of rice chromosome 1 orthologues in …

The Headscarf As Threat? A Comparison Of German And American Legal Discourses, Robert A. Kahn Aug 2006

The Headscarf As Threat? A Comparison Of German And American Legal Discourses, Robert A. Kahn

ExpressO

In this article I compare how American and German judges conceptualize the harm the headscarf poses to society. My examples are the 2003 Ludin case, in which the German Federal Constitutional Court held that the civil service, in the absence of state regulation, could not reject a woman from a civil service teaching position solely because she would not remove her headscarf while teaching; and State v. Freeman, in which a Florida court held that a woman could not pose for a drivers license wearing a garment (the niqab) that covered all of her face except her eyes. While judges …

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl Aug 2006

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to present some understandings of the human problem-solving activity that we have gained in the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past two decades. Since we feel strongly that the human decision-maker should be an integral component of any computer-based decision-support system, it follows that we would have endeavored to incorporate many of the elements that appear to be important to the user in the design of these systems. The complexity of the human cognitive system is evidenced by the large body of literature that describes problem-solving behavior and the relatively fewer …

Exposure Of Neonates To Respiratory Syncytial Virus Is Critical In Determining Subsequent Airway Response In Adults, Dahui You, David Becnel, Kai Wang, Michael Ripple, Melissa Daly, Stephania A. Cormier Aug 2006

Exposure Of Neonates To Respiratory Syncytial Virus Is Critical In Determining Subsequent Airway Response In Adults, Dahui You, David Becnel, Kai Wang, Michael Ripple, Melissa Daly, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of acute bronchiolitis in infants and the elderly. Furthermore, epidemiological data suggest that RSV infection during infancy is a potent trigger of subsequent wheeze and asthma development. However, the mechanism by which RSV contributes to asthma is complex and remains largely unknown. A recent study indicates that the age of initial RSV infection is a key factor in determining airway response to RSV rechallenge. We hypothesized that severe RSV infection during neonatal development significantly alters lung structure and the pulmonary immune micro-environment; and thus, neonatal RSV infection is crucial in …

The Place Of Covert Policing In Democratic Societies: An Empirical Study Of The U.S. And Germany, Jacqueline E. Ross Aug 2006

The Place Of Covert Policing In Democratic Societies: An Empirical Study Of The U.S. And Germany, Jacqueline E. Ross

ExpressO

My study of undercover policing explores the ways in which democratic legal systems change when they legalize highly contested police practices that have long been quietly tolerated and accorded minimal scrutiny. Undercover policing is a prime of example of such a practice. It has long been subject to remarkably little legislative oversight and systematic regulation in the United States and Western Europe. It exists in a twilight of legality—a necessary evil, but one inviting anxieties about its legitimacy and consonance with the rule of law. Under pressure from the European Court of Human Rights, Germany (along with other Western European …

Modeling And Testing Of An Instantaneous Overcurrent Relay Using Vtb And Vtb-Rt, Daxa Patel Aug 2006

Modeling And Testing Of An Instantaneous Overcurrent Relay Using Vtb And Vtb-Rt, Daxa Patel

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the application of the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) and its real-time extension, VTB-RT, for protective relay modeling, simulation, and testing. An instantaneous overcurrent relay model was developed in VTB for a transmission line protection. The same relay model was built in Matlab/Simulink for validation purposes. Both models were tested for various fault conditions on a radial power system and results were compared. Moreover, a low cost real-time Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulation platform was implemented for relay model testing using VTB-RT and public domain software packages such as Real-Time Application Interface (RTAI), Comedi, and Comedilib, and notebook computer hardware. …

Mechanobiology Of Soft Tissue Differentiation: Effect Of Hydrostatic Pressure, Joon Wan Shim Aug 2006

Mechanobiology Of Soft Tissue Differentiation: Effect Of Hydrostatic Pressure, Joon Wan Shim

Theses and Dissertations

This study was motivated by a theoretical formulation on mechanobiology of soft and hard skeletal tissue differentiation. To prove this formulation experimentally, I hypothesized that cartilaginous phenotype can be induced in vitro in a seemingly non-cartilaginous cell source from fibrous tissue. In testing this hypothesis, I have focused on cartilage as a target and fibrous tissue as an origin or the source of cell. Four different trials were pursued with one supposition in common, i.e. hydrostatic pressure is one of the main driving forces for chondroinduction in vitro. The first and second trials pertained to the influence of a relatively …

Adsorption Of Water Contaminants Onto Kenaf Fibers, Stephen Douglas Tolar Aug 2006

Adsorption Of Water Contaminants Onto Kenaf Fibers, Stephen Douglas Tolar

Theses and Dissertations

In this research, the adsorptive capacities of kenaf in the forms of chopped whole stalk, chopped core, and bast materials were evaluated for the removal of lead, zinc, and toluene from contaminated synthetic waste streams using traditional adsorption isotherm techniques. The effect of surface oxidation using ozone was observed with respect to the adsorption of metals. Hydraulic conductivity experiments were conducted to evaluate the head loss associated with packing a column with kenaf fibers and to determine the suitability of its use in dynamic packed column systems. B.E.T. surface areas were determined as well. Under increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, even …
