Censusing And Measuring Lianas: A Quantitative Comparison Of The Common Methods, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Saara J. Dewalt, Jérôme Chave Sep 2006

Censusing And Measuring Lianas: A Quantitative Comparison Of The Common Methods, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Saara J. Dewalt, Jérôme Chave

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Lianas contribute to many aspects of tropical forest diversity and dynamics, and interest in liana ecology has grown substantially in recent years. Methods to census lianas and estimate biomass, however, differ among studies, possibly hindering attempts to compare liana communities. At Nouragues Research Station (French Guiana), we tested the extent to which liana abundance, basal area, and estimated biomass differed depending on stem diameter measurement location, inclusion of ramets, inclusion of lianas rooted within versus passing through the plot, and plot shape. We found that the mean per plot abundance and basal area of lianas were significantly greater when lianas …

Incorporating Service Learning Into Your Special Education Classroom, Victoria Groves Scott

Disabilities

In service learning, students learn skills and apply their knowledge while addressing an identified community need. Service learning is especially powerful in special education as students with disabilities are allowed the opportunity to give, instead of receive, help, and support, and therefore gain independence and self-esteem. This article outlines the steps involved in implementing a service learning project within a special education classroom.

Undue Process, Adam M. Samaha Sep 2006

Undue Process, Adam M. Samaha

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This Article explores the relationship of the United States Constitution to the costs of government decision-making. Constitutional law clearly can escalate these costs, as when the due process clauses are read to mandate additional procedure not otherwise favored by decisionmakers. This much is understood. But the Constitution and its doctrine sometimes put downward pressure on decision costs. We lack a systematic investigation of when this is, and should be, true. I make three general claims: (1) The entire Constitution tends to reduce decision costs insofar as it is a focal point for confining disputes, and empirical work suggests that the …

Multi-Learner Based Recursive Supervised Training, Laxmi R. Iyer, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng-Uei Guan Sep 2006

Multi-Learner Based Recursive Supervised Training, Laxmi R. Iyer, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng-Uei Guan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose the multi-learner based recursive supervised training (MLRT) algorithm, which uses the existing framework of recursive task decomposition, by training the entire dataset, picking out the best learnt patterns, and then repeating the process with the remaining patterns. Instead of having a single learner to classify all datasets during each recursion, an appropriate learner is chosen from a set of three learners, based on the subset of data being trained, thereby avoiding the time overhead associated with the genetic algorithm learner utilized in previous approaches. In this way MLRT seeks to identify the inherent characteristics of …

Introduction: Self-Organization In Nonequilibrium Chemical Systems, Irving R. Epstein, John A. Pojman, Oliver Steinbock Sep 2006

Introduction: Self-Organization In Nonequilibrium Chemical Systems, Irving R. Epstein, John A. Pojman, Oliver Steinbock

Faculty Publications

The field of self-organization in nonequilibrium chemical systems comprises the study of dynamical phenomena in chemically reacting systems far from equilibrium. Systematic exploration of this area began with investigations of the temporal behavior of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky oscillating reaction, discovered accidentally in the former Soviet Union in the 1950s. The field soon advanced into chemical waves in excitable media and propagating fronts. With the systematic design of oscillating reactions in the 1980s and the discovery of Turing patterns in the 1990s, the scope of these studies expanded dramatically. The articles in this Focus Issue provide an overview of the development and …

Perception’S Of Preservice Teachers ’Toward Children’S Literature, Khaled Alazzi Sep 2006

Perception’S Of Preservice Teachers ’Toward Children’S Literature, Khaled Alazzi

Essays in Education

Children’s literature is used across the curriculum in elementary classrooms today. How is this literature viewed by preservice teachers and how will their viewpoints affect their use of literature with students? The purpose of this study was to describe preservice teachers’ written responses to children’s literature with geometric content. Six related, but distinct themes emerged after multiple readings of the responses; these themes depict preservice teachers who are: (1) making personal connections with literature, (2) reading for children, (3) being the teachers, (4) looking for the math, (5) finding instructional ideas, and (6) focusing on the morals.
