Discipline Concerns Among Preservice Teachers, Leslie Irwin, Funmi Amobi
Discipline Concerns Among Preservice Teachers, Leslie Irwin, Funmi Amobi
Essays in Education
This paper was prompted by conversations with preservice teachers concerning the concept of discipline. The paper explored some background theory of discipline, leading to maintenance of desired behavior in the classroom. It addressed dimensions of discipline touching on the locus of control of discipline, purposes of discipline, and factors that affect discipline. Finally, the paper dealt with the preventive aspect of discipline. Though instigated by preservice teachers in mind, the issue is of significance to all practitioners. This paper is more informational than prescriptive.
Illustrating Physics With Ray-Traced Computer Graphics, Thomas J. Bensky
Illustrating Physics With Ray-Traced Computer Graphics, Thomas J. Bensky
Physics
This paper provides a brief introduction to using ray-traced computer graphics for creating illustrations to be used in physics teaching. The article focuses on Povray, a freely available ray-tracing software program. We have found that a ray-traced illustration produced with this software provides a final-image quality that is far superior to hand-drawn illustrations and those produced using standard click-and-draw computer drawing software. Techniques for illustrating time-dependent scenarios are discussed as well.

The leading genetic cause of infant mortality is spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders. Previously we described a domestic cat model of autosomal recessive, juvenile-onset SMA similar to human SMA type III. Here we report results of a whole-genome scan for linkage in the feline SMA pedigree using recently developed species-specific and comparative mapping resources. We identified a novel SMA gene candidate, LIX1, in an ~140-kb deletion on feline chromosome A1q in a region of conserved synteny to human chromosome 5q15. Though LIX1 function is unknown, the predicted secondary structure is compatible with …
The Reliability And Validity Of A Manual Coding System For Identifying Emotion, Erin O'Carroll Bantum
The Reliability And Validity Of A Manual Coding System For Identifying Emotion, Erin O'Carroll Bantum
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Emotion focused coping and emotional expression have been identified as potential mediators of long-term adjustment to a cancer diagnosis. Tools for measuring emotional expression in text have not been well-validated, although there is an abundance of textual data that is available to help explore emotional expression and the relationship between emotional expression and outcome measures. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a manual coding system of emotional expression that could be compared with current programs that have been used to evaluate emotional expression. Inter-rater reliability was found to be good with the use of the manually coded system …
Gene Expression In The Mouse Placenta: Developmental And Stress Responses, Ciprian P. Gheorghe
Gene Expression In The Mouse Placenta: Developmental And Stress Responses, Ciprian P. Gheorghe
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Successful placental development is crucial for optimal growth, maturation, and survival of the embryo/fetus. Placental failure and placental pathology contributes to both morbidity and mortality of the fetus. We sought to understand normal placental development and also placental responses to stress using oligonucleotide microarray technology. To examine genetic aspects of normal placental development, we investigated gene expression patterns in the murine placenta at embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5), E12.5, E15.5, and E17.5. Hypoxia has been identified as a major stressor in placental and fetal development. In order to comprehend more completely hypoxic stress responses we sought to measure gene expression changes …
Temperament And Character Correlates Of The Startle Reflex, Kristen Lee Godenick
Temperament And Character Correlates Of The Startle Reflex, Kristen Lee Godenick
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Some literature suggests that individual temperament traits can modulate the startle reflex. There is evidence supporting Cloninger’s concept of Harm Avoidance as being predictive of individual differences in reactivity to aversive stimuli. (Corr, 1997). Since this finding, a new version Cloninger’s measure includes character subscales that like temperament, have been proposed to modify the meaning of experiences, changing emotional reactions. High scorers on the character variables are less susceptible to excessive anxiety and tend to have neurochemical profiles that are not consistent with anxiety disorders (Gillespie, 2003; Tse & Bond, 2001; Peirson et al., 1999). It was thus hypothesized that …

Irreparable Benefits, Douglas Gary Lichtman
Irreparable Benefits, Douglas Gary Lichtman
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The conventional approach to preliminary relief focuses on irreparable harm but neglects entirely irreparable benefits. That is hard to understand. Errant irreversible harms are important because they distort incentives and have lasting distributional consequences. But the same is true of errant irreversible gains. When a preliminary injunction wrongly issues, then, there are actually two distinct errors to count: the irreparable harm wrongly imposed on the nonmoving party, and the irreparable benefit wrongly enjoyed by the moving party. Similarly, when a preliminary injunction is wrongly denied, there are again two errors, not one: the irreparable harm wrongly imposed on the moving …

Intestinal Enzymes During Malnutrition & Infection In Rabbits, Sufia Islam, Amal K. Mitra, Ashish K. Chowdhury, Nur Haque Alam
Faculty Publications
Background & objectives: Malnutrition plays an important role in the intestinal absorption of nutrients. However, reports are not consistent whether intestinal enzymes are decreased in the presence of malnutrition. It is also not clear whether simultaneous presence of malnutrition and infection adds to the problem of malabsorption of nutrients. The aim of the present study was to determine intestinal functions in terms of concentrations of disaccharidase enzymes during diarrhoea and protein energy malnutrition. Methods: Concentrations of three disaccharidase enzymes, namely maltase, sucrase and lactase were measured in nine energy-restricted and five control rabbits during diarrhoea induced by rabbit diarrhoeagenic Escherichia …

2006 Model Highway County Ordinances, Indiana Ltap
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications
This report is intended to provide model ordinances for common situations for county highway departments and local street departments in Indiana where no current sample or model ordinance is readily available. Information to prepare model ordinances was collected from other Indiana counties and municipalities. Some of the model ordinances were created at the request of local highway and street departments.
The purpose of this report was not to duplicate regulations already in place such as where state governments cover issues such road signage, or traffic control, but to provide references for situations that have no other regulation or where specific …

Cd80 And Cd86 Control Antiviral Cd8+ T-Cell Function And Immune Surveillance Of Murine Gammaherpesvirus 68, Shinichiro Fuse, Joshua J. Obar, Sarah Bellfy, Erica K. Leung, Weijun Zhang, Edward J. Usherwood
Dartmouth Scholarship
The interactions between CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells and CD28 on T cells serve as an important costimulatory signal in the activation of T cells. Although the simplistic two-signal hypothesis has been challenged in recent years by the identification of different costimulators, this classical pathway has been shown to significantly impact antiviral humoral and cellular immune responses. How the CD80/CD86-CD28 pathway affects the control of chronic or latent infections has been less well characterized. In this study, we investigated its role in antiviral immune responses against murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68) and immune surveillance using CD80/CD86−/− mice. In the …
Derrida's Deconstruction And The Rhetoric Of Proper Genres In Leonardo And Lessing, Shun-Liang Chao
Derrida's Deconstruction And The Rhetoric Of Proper Genres In Leonardo And Lessing, Shun-Liang Chao
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "Derrida's Deconstruction and the Rhetoric of Proper Genres in Leonardo and Lessing," Shun-liang Chao draws on Derrida's discourse of logocentrism to illuminate the "exorbitant" threads of metaphysical thought in Leonardo's and Lessing's texts on the comparison of poetry and painting. Both Leonardo and Lessing seek to subordinate one of the two sister arts to the other by constructing, respectively, the first, fixed principle of the proper genre and by drawing rigid borders between what is proper and what is improper. Leonardo privileges painting over poetry owing to the power of visiblity; on the other hand, Lessing subordinates …

The Old Story Teller As A John The Baptist-Figure In Demille's Samson And Delilah, Anton Karl Kozlovic
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "The Old Story Teller as a John the Baptist-figure in DeMille's Samson and Delilah," Anton Karl Kozlovic argues that DeMille is a pop culture professional, an unsung auteur, and the father of the US-American biblical epic whose production and direction of Samson and Delilah (1949) is a masterful exercise in sacred subtext construction. In the public's eyes, Samson is a saintly hero, but scripturally speaking, he is notoriously bad as the last of the twelve judges overseeing the downward spiral of Israel's religio-political disintegration. DeMille, as Hollywood’s leading cinematic lay preacher, enhanced deliberately the sanctity of his …
A Bakhtinian Perspective On Feminist Lesbian Crime Writing, Sarah Posman
A Bakhtinian Perspective On Feminist Lesbian Crime Writing, Sarah Posman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "A Bakhtinian Perspective on Feminist Lesbian Crime Writing," Sarah Posman discusses how the Bakhtinian concepts "ethos" and "chronotope" add to the discussion of feminist lesbian crime writing. She sets out from a Bakhtinian typology of action stories and situates recent crime writing as a curious mixture of mission stories and transformation stories. Focusing on the innovative potential of feminist lesbian crime writing, Posman explores how such stories tackle the iconically masculine and heterosexual conventions of the detective story and manage to balance tradition and subversion successfully. Posman infuses her analysis with issues central to feminism and queer …
Gender Identities In The Contemporary Slovene Novel, Alojzija Zupan Sosic
Gender Identities In The Contemporary Slovene Novel, Alojzija Zupan Sosic
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "Gender Identities in the Contemporary Slovene Novel," Alojzija Zupan Sosic argues that perspectives of sexual identity have become prominent topics. Based on her library and publication research, Zupan Sosic proposes that in the period of 1990–2005 the Slovene novel is illuminated by a development of the personal or intimate story. In this development, changes of sexual identity evolve through the binary system of the heterosexual matrix whereby issues of sexual minorities remain. Important innovation in the Slovene novel include aspects connected to an identity formation determined by sexual identity where perhaps the most significant innovation is found …

Observations On The Structures Of Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells And Platelets In Some Felis Spp. And Panthera Spp., Wimon Pothiwong, Kamol Sakulwira, Pakorn Prachammuang, Siripen Vethchagarun
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Blood cells and platelets from twenty-seven animals belonging to two genera of the Family Felidae, were studied using both light and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). Generally, blood cells can be categorized into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The red blood cells or erythrocytes from these species were round and had neither a nucleus nor organelles. They showed a central pale area, Heinz bodies and rouleaux formation. The white blood cells could be divided into two groups; granulocytes and agranulocytes. The granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils) were spherical in shape with lobulated nuclei and containing specific granules in …

Intra And Interspecies Somatic Cell Cloning In Rabbits, Cats And Goats, Mongkol Techakumphu, Pranee Numchaisrika, Ruttachak Rungsiwiwat, Ampika Thongpakdee, Malee Apimeteetumrong, Pramuan Virutamasen
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Nuclear transfer from adult somatic cells is an advanced reproductive biotechnology. This technique can be applied in animal production for producing a high genetically identical copy for endangered species conservation and for therapeutic cloning for human medicine. Our three-year preliminary study indicates the possibility of somatic cell cloning by using the rabbit as model of technical development. Later, interspecies cloning in wild cats and domestic cats was performed successfully in terms of cloned embryo production. Meanwhile, goat cloning served as the model for farm animals.

When Persecution Bleeds Into Mass Murder: The Processive Nature Of Genocide, Uğur Ü. Üngör
When Persecution Bleeds Into Mass Murder: The Processive Nature Of Genocide, Uğur Ü. Üngör
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
In the rapidly developing historiography of the Armenian Genocide, the processive character of pre-genocidal persecutions has received less attention than the genocidal process itself. This article treats the persecution of Ottoman Armenians as a cumulative process leading up to a mass-murder campaign in the summer of 1915. It addresses the evolution of CUP policy toward the Armenians through the prism of escalating persecution and the relationship between center and periphery. In order to illustrate the concrete implementation of this process, the province of Diyarbekir will serve as an example to clarify the history of the persecutions.

Green And Blue Lasers Are Ineffectivefor Dispersing Deer At Night, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Jason M. Gilsdorf, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Paul B. Fioranelli, John A. Wilson, Scott Barras
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Over-abundant populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) create agriculturaland human health and safety issues. The increased economic damage associated with locally overabundant deer populations accentuates the need for efficient techniques to mitigate the losses. Although red lasers can be an efficient tool for reducing damage caused by birds, they are not effective for deer because deer cannot detect wavelengths in the red portion of the spectrum. No research has been conducted to determine if lasers of lower wavelengths could function as frightening devices for deer. We evaluated agreen laser (534nm, 120mW)and 2 models of blue lasers (473nm, 5 mW and …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Iridoviruses (IVs) are classified into five genera: Iridovirus and Chloriridovirus, whose members infect invertebrates, and Ranavirus, Lymphocystivirus, and Megalocytivirus, whose members infect vertebrates. Until now, Chloriridovirus was the only IV genus for which a representative and complete genomic sequence was not available. Here, we report the genome sequence and comparative analysis of a field isolate of Invertebrate iridescent virus type 3 (IIV-3), also known as mosquito iridescent virus, currently the sole member of the genus Chloriridovirus. Approximately 20% of the 190-kbp IIV-3 genome was repetitive DNA, with DNA repeats localized in 15 apparently noncoding regions. Of …
