Judaism Without Ordinary Law: Toward A Broader View Of Sanctification, Jonathan R. Cohen Oct 2006

Judaism Without Ordinary Law: Toward A Broader View Of Sanctification, Jonathan R. Cohen

UF Law Faculty Publications

With the functional constriction of Jewish law to the ritual, it is easy to relegate Torah and, with it, our sense of sanctification, to the ritual. Such is a great loss. Recognizing sanctification as not only separation but also elevation may help us see the possibility of pursuing sanctification throughout our lives. In other words, the legal constriction produced by history should not become a spiritual one as well.

'Yet In A Primitive Condition': Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian, Shannon Egan

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

From 1907 to 1930, Edward S. Curtis created The North American Indian, a forty-volume edition of photographs and writings that he hoped would cover “every phase of Indian life of all tribes yet in a primitive condition.” All evidence indicates that he set out to make a singular and unified work of art. However, a comparative analysis of photographs made at different moments in this ambitious project reveals that The North American Indian ultimately is characterized not by stylistic and thematic unity but by significant shifts in aesthetic and political orientation. Effects Of Long-Term Hypoxia On Enzymes Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Mery L. Mártinez, Christie Landry, Ryan Boehm, Steve Manning, Bernard B. Rees

Faculty Publications

The goal of the current study was to generate a comprehensive, multi-tissue perspective of the effects of chronic hypoxic exposure on carbohydrate metabolism in the Gulf killifish Fundulus grandis. Fish were held at approximately 1.3 mg l(-1) dissolved oxygen (similar to 3.6 kPa) for 4 weeks, after which maximal activities were measured for all glycolytic enzymes in four tissues (white skeletal muscle, liver, heart and brain), as well as for enzymes of glycogen metabolism (in muscle and liver) and gluconeogenesis (in liver). The specific activities of enzymes of glycolysis and glycogen metabolism were strongly suppressed by hypoxia in white skeletal …

Commandeering And Its Alternatives: A Federalism Perspective, Neil S. Siegel Oct 2006

Commandeering And Its Alternatives: A Federalism Perspective, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

This inquiry argues that current Tenth Amendment jurisprudence causes net harm to federalism values under certain circumstances. Specifically, New York v. United States and Printz v. United States protect state autonomy to some extent by requiring the federal government to internalize more of the costs of federal regulation before engaging in regulation, and by addressing any accountability problems that commandeering can cause. But anticommandeering doctrine harms state autonomy in situations where the presence of the rule triggers more preemption going forward. Preemption generally causes a greater compromise of federalism values than does commandeering by eroding state regulatory control.

While it …

Audio Similarity Measure By Graph Modeling And Matching, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo, Cuihua Fang, Xiaoou Chen, Jianguo Xiao Oct 2006

Audio Similarity Measure By Graph Modeling And Matching, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo, Cuihua Fang, Xiaoou Chen, Jianguo Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a new approach for the similarity measure and ranking of audio clips by graph modeling and matching. Instead of using frame-based or salient-based features to measure the acoustical similarity of audio clips, segment-based similarity is proposed. The novelty of our approach lies in two aspects: segment-based representation, and the similarity measure and ranking based on four kinds of similarity factors. In segmentbased representation, segments not only capture the change property of audio clip, but also keep and present the change relation and temporal order of audio features. In the similarity measure and ranking, four kinds of similarity …

Bio-Inspired Algorithms For The Design Of Multiple Optimal Power System Stabilizers: Sppso And Bfa, Tridib Kumar Das, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) provide stabilizing control signals to excitation systems to damp out inter-area and intra-area oscillations. The PSS must be optimally tuned to accommodate the variations in the system dynamics. Designing multiple optimal PSSs is a challenging task for researchers. This paper presents the comparison between two bio-inspired algorithms: a Small Population based Particle Swarm Optimization (SPPSO) and the Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (BFA) for the simultaneous tuning of a number of PSSs in a multi-machine power system. The cost function to be optimized by both algorithms takes into consideration the time domain transient responses. The effectiveness of the …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1) is the first virus known to be pathogenic to a wild lobster. It infects the Caribbean spiny lobster P. argus from the Florida Keys, and has a predilection for juveniles. The monitoring of the virus in wild populations and study of its behavior in the laboratory require the development of reliable diagnostic tools. A sensitive and specific fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay was developed for detection of PaV1. The lower detection limit using a 110 bp DNA probe in a dot-blot hybridization for PaV1 DNA was 10 pg of cloned template PaV1 DNA and …

Gene Flow In Complex Landscapes: Testing Multiple Hypotheses With Causal Modeling., Samuel A. Cushman, Kevin Scot Mckelvey, Jim Hayden, Michael K. Schwartz

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Predicting population-level effects of landscape change depends on identifying factors that influence population connectivity in complex landscapes. However, most putative movement corridors and barriers have not been based on empirical data. In this study, we identify factors that influence connectivity by comparing patterns of genetic similarity among 146 black bears (Ursus americanus), sampled across a 3,000-km2 study area in northern Idaho, with 110 landscape-resistance hypotheses. Genetic similarities were based on the pairwise percentage dissimilarity among all individuals based on nine microsatellite loci (average expected heterozygosityp0.79). Landscape-resistance hypotheses describe a range of potential relationships between movement cost and land cover, slope, …

Invasion Through Quantitative Effects: Intense Shade Drives Native Decline And Invasive Success, Kurt O. Reinhart, Julie Gurnee, Reyes Tirado, Ragan M. Callaway

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The effects of invasive nonnative species on community composition are well documented. However, few studies have determined the mechanisms by which invaders drive these changes. The literature indicates that many nonnative plant species alter light availability differently than natives in a given community, suggesting that shading may be such a mechanism. We compared light quantity (photosynthetically active radiation, PAR) and quality (red : far-red ratio, R:Fr) in riparian reaches heavily invaded by a nonnative tree (Acer platanoides) to that in an uninvaded forest and experimentally tested the effects of our measured differences in PAR and R:Fr on the …

Year-Round Diet Of The Marsh Rice Rat, Oryzomys Palustris, In Virginia Tidal Marshes, Robert K. Rose, Shannon W. Mcgurk

Virginia Journal of Science

The marsh rice rat, Oryzomys palustris, is the dominant semi-aquatic rodent living in tidal marshes of the Virginia coastal plain. Described as highly carnivorous, this species is known to consume a range of animal foods, including crustaceans, mollusks, fish, and arthropods, as well as some plant foods. Analysis of stomach contents from rice rats collected from Eastern Shore tidal marshes throughout an annual cycle revealed that all 103 stomachs contained dicots, 82 percent had monocots, 61 percent had crabs and insects, and 38 percent had snails. Thirty-eight percent of stomachs contained foods in all five categories, no stomach was …

A Diversity Theory Of Charitable Tax Exemption—Beyond Efficiency, Through Critical Race Theory, Toward Diversity, David A. Brennen Oct 2006

A Diversity Theory Of Charitable Tax Exemption—Beyond Efficiency, Through Critical Race Theory, Toward Diversity, David A. Brennen

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

What is the normative rationale for the federal income tax exemption for nonprofit charitable corporations? Even though the exemption dates back to 1894, Congress has failed to fully rationalize it. Though scholars and courts have attempted over the years to come up with a coherent rationale for the charitable tax exemption, their attempts are focused almost exclusively on economic efficiency. Thus, the charitable tax exemption is typically framed by noted tax scholars like Boris Bittker, Henry Hansmann, and others as an economically efficient means of providing certain goods and services to the public. Rationalizing the charitable tax exemption in economic …
