An Enquiry Into Fully Lived Moments, Philip Hawkins Jan 2006

An Enquiry Into Fully Lived Moments, Philip Hawkins

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis explores facets of human agency and fully lived moments in the Cobra group, the ideas of Henri Lefebvre, and the ideas of Victor Burgin and psychoanalysis. Connective elements, and their relevance or not, through different disciplines, are a central part of its thinking. To this end some connections are found, some speculative connections are tracked, and there are some ideas that don't connect, yet come close to doing so but which become valuable for the examination of productive tensions and excesses about the lived in a cross-disciplinary enquiry. To begin with, an original set of historical and thematic …

Reading Neuroscience: Ventriloquism As A Metaphor For Multiple Readings Of Self, David Evans Jan 2006

Reading Neuroscience: Ventriloquism As A Metaphor For Multiple Readings Of Self, David Evans

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis argues that the consensus models of self forwarded and upheld in the fields of discourse most concerned with its description, indicate a process of ventriloquism where agency slips between dual poles of body and mind and cannot be tracked to a hiding place. Just as with ventriloquism, in these models of self it is unclear who is doing the 'talking', and the skill of performance would seem to make the distinction almost redundant. The self seems a complicity of often conflicting agents when analysed as its constituent parts, and not there at all when viewed as a whole. …

Rethinking Absence: Art Practice And The Critical Metaphysics Of Jacques Derrida And Jacques Lacan, Karen Georgette Roulstone Jan 2006

Rethinking Absence: Art Practice And The Critical Metaphysics Of Jacques Derrida And Jacques Lacan, Karen Georgette Roulstone

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The methodology aims to demonstrate that absence is not reducible to one approach or another but plays on the incommensurabilities, commensurabilities and gaps between the different concepts presented. The 'motions of absence', which are textual insertions interspersed between the sections, directly articulate the methodology of the thesis by responding to and exploring the thinking in each section. The methodology therefore both produces and addresses the tensions and gaps available in visual and theoretical discourses to demonstrate absence. lt thereby allows for the possibility of a re-inscription of signification for absence to occur.

Articulations Of Equity: Practice, Complexity And Power In Facilitated Art Projects, Gill Claire Melling Jan 2006

Articulations Of Equity: Practice, Complexity And Power In Facilitated Art Projects, Gill Claire Melling

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This is a practice-based research project which analysis how democracy and facilitation are articulated within two different social contexts. The purpose of this research is to make apparent, through two facilitated art projects- the Elder Flowers project and the Exwick Image Project - the contingency of meanings and methods of making democratic choice with participants. The argument is that my methods of facilitation, which embrace social and cognitive difference by 'attending to' (that is, using methods of empathic listening and responsive action), their outcomes and meanings are contingent to each specific interaction. These acts of creative facilitation ask new questions …

Crystals And Mud In Nature, Richard J. Lazarus Jan 2006

Crystals And Mud In Nature, Richard J. Lazarus

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Professor James Salzman has written a wonderful article, which promises an equally wonderful book. His article intelligently and thoughtfully examines the forces that compete, conflict, and combine in the creation of laws relating to drinking water. These include, of course, the physical characteristics of the resource itself and how the resource relates to essential biological needs of humankind. But as Professor Salzman demonstrates, the biological role is only one of several perspectives on drinking water relevant to the kind of legal rules that apply to it. The article describes drinking water as a cultural resource, a social resource, and an …

Effects Of A-Beta Immunotherapy And Omega-3 Fatty Acid Administration In Alzheimer’S Transgenic Mice, Maren T. Jensen Jan 2006

Effects Of A-Beta Immunotherapy And Omega-3 Fatty Acid Administration In Alzheimer’S Transgenic Mice, Maren T. Jensen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Major therapeutics against Alzheimer's disease (AD) are targeted towards reducing beta-amyloid in the brain and improving cognitive performance. Transgenic mouse models of AD have become critical in the development of such therapeutics to protect against or treat AD. This dissertation examined the potential protective effects of both active A-beta immunotherapy and dietary omega-3 fatty acid administration to AD transgenic mice. First, immunization with A-beta 1-42 from 2-16 1/2 months of age provided protection against cognitive impairment in APP/PS1 transgenic mice well into older age. At both adult (4 1/2-6 month) and aged (15-16 1/2 month) test points, an extensive 6-week …

Mercury Concentrations In The Muscles Of The North American Bullfrogs (Rana Catesbeiana), Jarrod Connell

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many studies have be done on mercury in the environment. The studies though have focused on sport fish and migratory waterfowl. North American Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) has been one species neglected from studies. One study has shown that bullfrogs due accumulate significant amounts of mercury (Gerstenberger S., and Pearson R. 2002). Though, no study has been done to find out if hind limbs have more concentrations that front limbs. Also to see if there is a difference between skin-off and skin-on, to find out if skin accumulates mercury. This study found that there was no significant difference between front and …

Phenotypic And Genetic Effects Of Chernobyl-Derived Radionuclide Contamination On The Red-Eyed Damselfly Erythromma Najas (Odonata, Coenagrionidae), Claire Rebecca Cailes

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The 1986 Chernobyl accident released large amounts of radioactive contamination into the surrounding environment. As a result, the Chernobyl region provides a suitable site for investigations into the effects of ionising radiation on non-human biota. Studies of this type are important in order to establish whether or not current anthropocentric radiation protection guidelines are appropriate for the protection of the wider environment. Despite the presence of many freshwater habitats in the region, there have been few studies investigating the effects of radiation on aquatic invertebrates. In the present study, the effects of Chernobyl-derived radionuclide contamination on the red-eyed damselfly, Erythromma …

The Value Of Black And White In An Era Of Color: A Textual Analysis Of Black And White Illustrations In Picture Books, Theresa Forret Jan 2006

The Value Of Black And White In An Era Of Color: A Textual Analysis Of Black And White Illustrations In Picture Books, Theresa Forret

Graduate Research Papers

Children's picture books have aesthetic, personal, and educational value. The illustrations within picture books may capture the attention of young readers, create a positive attitude toward books and reading, enhance the story, and may assist with comprehension. A majority of the children's picture books published today are illustrated with bright, vibrant colors. Books illustrated in black and white are less common and perhaps less appealing to children. This study investigated three questions. Are there identifiable commonalities within the visual elements in black and white picture book illustrations? Are there commonalities and patterns in the mood, genre, and setting of picture …

Problem Based Learning, Susan Tebbe Jan 2006

Problem Based Learning, Susan Tebbe

Graduate Research Papers

The No Child Left Behind legislation brought about a flurry of conversations regarding student achievement (McElroy, 2006). Increased use of standardized testing to measure student achievement has resulted in a discussion of teaching models. Is the transmission teaching model with its expository style the only mode to insure student success? Or is the constructivist teaching model with its inquiry style a mode that better leads to student success? This review of literature examines the instructional practices involved in problem based learning, a constructivist approach. The paper focuses on the components of problem-based learning, the benefits and challenges of using this.approach, …

The Analysis And Characterisation Of Rotavirus And Norovirus Circulating In The South Of Ireland, Norma Reidy

Theses

On average more than 3,000 cases of rotavirus diarrhea are detected annually amongst Irish children less than 3 years of age. Rotavirus disease occurs mainly during the winter months, with peak infections detected from February to April. The symptoms of disease are diarrhea and dehydration, with 80% of patients requiring hospitalisation, The mean duration of hospitalisation is 3-4 days, with an average cost per day of €409. Eighteen percent of infections were detected in infants less than 6 months of age, suggesting inadequate maternal derived protection from existing strains, or the existence of novel strains in Ireland with little or …

The Development Of Functional Food Ingredients From Yeast Cell Wall Beta Glucans, Susan Keogh Jan 2006

The Development Of Functional Food Ingredients From Yeast Cell Wall Beta Glucans, Susan Keogh

Theses

The intracellular contents of spent yeast can be used to produce flavours and flavour enhancers. However there still remains after this process, a significant quantity of cell wall material, which makes up 20-25% of the dry weight of yeast biomass. A major component of the yeast cell wall is the polysaccharide P-glucan. This project involved the investigation of the extraction and characterisation of p-glucan as well as its evaluation as a functional food ingredient. A preparation of spent yeast p-glucan was obtained from two types of spent yeast species, Saccharomyces cervisiae (brewers yeast) and Kluyveromyces marxianus (dairy yeast) obtained from …

3,3′-Diindolylmethane And Paclitaxel Act Synergistically To Promote Apoptosis In Her2/Neu Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kandace P. Mcguire, N. Ngoubilly, M. Neavyn, Susan Lanza-Jacoby Jan 2006

3,3′-Diindolylmethane And Paclitaxel Act Synergistically To Promote Apoptosis In Her2/Neu Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kandace P. Mcguire, N. Ngoubilly, M. Neavyn, Susan Lanza-Jacoby

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Background. HER2/neu positive breast tumors are difficult to treat. About 25 to 30% of invasive breast tumors overexpress the HER2/neu oncogene. These tumors are aggressive and become resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs. 3,3′-diindolylmethane (DIM), the active metabolite of indole-3-carbinol, a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables, has been found to have anti-cancer properties in both humans and animals. DIM has been shown to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in animal breast cancer models. Because HER2/neu overexpression confers resistance to paclitaxel, and DIM has anti-tumor effects, we hypothesized that DIM will enhance the cytotoxic effects of paclitaxel, a common …

Tick Pheromones And Their Use In Tick Control, Daniel E. Sonenshine Jan 2006

Tick Pheromones And Their Use In Tick Control, Daniel E. Sonenshine

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Tick pheromones that regulate assembly, attraction/aggregation/attachment, and mating behavior have been described. Most of the compounds regulating these behaviors are purines, substituted phenols, or cholesteryl esters. Other pheromonal compounds include organic acids, hematin, or ecdysteroids. Novel devices have been developed that combine the specific compounds comprising these pheromones with an acaricide. When applied to tick-infested vegetation or directly to the body surfaces of livestock or companion animals, these devices are effective for tick control. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge of tick pheromones. In addition, this review also presents examples illustrating how devices using tick pheromones can offer …

The Adaptive Value Of Aggregation Among Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobster: An Evaluation Using Individual-Based Modeling, Thomas W. Dolan Iii, Mark J. Butler Iv Jan 2006

The Adaptive Value Of Aggregation Among Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobster: An Evaluation Using Individual-Based Modeling, Thomas W. Dolan Iii, Mark J. Butler Iv

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Ontogenetic changes in gregariousness by pre-reproductive animals, like that observed in juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus), may be adaptive and reflect size-specific changes in the effectiveness of aggregation in promoting survival. Alternatively, aggregation may simply result from changes in the distribution or availability of suitable habitat structure, or from other behaviors that enhance survival. There are currently two hypotheses explaining the potential benefits of gregarious behavior in juvenile spiny lobsters, both of which focus on increasing survivorship by reducing predation pressure: the group benefit hypothesis and the guide hypothesis. The group benefit hypothesis argues that aggregations of …

Energy Value In Llamas (Lama Glama) Fed With Alfalfa Hay (Modicago Sativa) And Barley (Hordeum Vulgare) For Apparent Digestibility In Vivo In The National Camelid Germplasm Bank (Ceac), Edwin Gonzalo Ugarte Huanca

Theses and Dissertations

In this experiment, we used four male llamas that were three to four years of age from the Khara race. They were divided into two ad libitum feeding groups. The digestible energy (ED) was determined using samples that were sent to the laboratory. These samples were derived from a conventional in vivo assay using the method of total fecal collection in order to determine the difference between energy consumed and energy excreted. Metabolizable energy was calculated by deducting digestible energy, energy loss in the urine and energy loss in the gases (methane). Urinary energy was determined through the measurement of …
