Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Systemic candidiasis is a rare disease of animals. In this study, the clinical course, and cultural and pathological findings of systemic candidiasis are described and presumed predisposing factors are investigated in 3 dogs. Pathologically, pyogranulomatous lesions in various organs were present in all dogs. Blastospores, pseudohyphae, and true hyphae of Candida albicans were observed with periodic acid Schiff, Gomori's methenamine silver, and immunohistochemistry. Administrations of broad-spectrum antibiotics and corticosteroids and, in one dog, parvoviral infection were thought to be predisposing factors leading to opportunistic infection. The combined effect of immunosuppressants and antibiotics might have led to Candida colonization and dissemination …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate serum iron parameters, and copper and iron deficiency anemia in ewes infected with gastro-intestinal parasites. This study was conducted with 60 pregnant Akkaraman ewes. In the statistical analyses, values obtained from both parasite infected and uninfected ewes were compared. Significant decreases were observed in PCV (P < 0.05), Hb (P < 0.05), RBC (P < 0.05), total protein (P < 0.05), albumin (P < 0.05), globulin (P < 0.05), and MCHC (P < 0.01), and a significant increase was seen in the WBC value (P < 0.05) in the parasite infected group. Furthermore, the parasite infected group had lower serum Fe (P < 0.001), TS % (P < 0.001), and serum Cu (P < 0.01) levels, and had higher UIBC values (P < 0.05) compared to the values obtain from the uninfected group. Therefore, in addition to antiparasite drug treatment in parasite infected pregnant ewes, iron preparations should also be administered in order to treat iron deficiency.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Sixty BVDV field strains isolated from different regions of Turkey were antigenically characterised with a panel of 16 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific to viral proteins E2 and NS2-3. MAb recognition patterns were detected by an indirect peroxidase-linked antibody assay and data were subjected to computer analysis for discussing herd specificity of viral strains isolated from immunotolerant, persistently infected (IPI) cattle. For that purpose, phylogenic and statistical analyses were performed. A high level of antigenic diversity was detected among the isolates. Diversity was also exhibited in IPI strains originating from the same herd. In some herds, viruses were divided into 2 …

Predictive Decisionmaking, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2006

Predictive Decisionmaking, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this Article, Professor Abramowicz identifies a regulatory strategy that he calls "predictive decisionmaking" and provides a framework for assessing it. In a predictive decisionmaking regime, public or private decisionmakers make predictions, often of future legal decisions, rather than engage in normative analysis. Several scholars, particularly in recent years, have offered proposals that fit within the predictive decisionmaking paradigm, but have not noted the connection among these proposals. The Article highlights five different mechanisms on which predictive decisionmaking regimes may rely, including predictive standards, enterprise liability, accuracy incentives, partial insurance requirements, and information markets. After identifying several advantages that predictive …

Cloning And Expression Of Key Endocrine Genes In A Study On Estrogen Stimulated Sexual Size Dimorphism (Ssd) In Yellow Perch, Scott George Lynn

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) exhibit an estrogen stimulated sexual sizedimorphism (SSD) wherein females grow faster and larger than males. In an effort togain better understanding of this phenomenon, several genes associated with sexualdevelopment, reproduction and growth were cloned, including prolactin (PRL),somatolactin (SL), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-Ib), the estrogen receptors (ER?? andER??a) and ovarian aromatase (CYP19A1). Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assaysfor all the genes listed above, plus growth hormone (GH), were developed to measuremRNA levels in pituitary, liver and ovary.Adult fish were collected from Lake Erie in the spring (May) and autumn(October) over two years and tissue mRNA levels, body weight, …

Increased Oxidative Damage To Dna And The Effects On Mitochondrial Protein In Alzheimer's Disease, Jianquan Wang Jan 2006

Increased Oxidative Damage To Dna And The Effects On Mitochondrial Protein In Alzheimer's Disease, Jianquan Wang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, irreversible, neurodegenerative disease. The key to understanding AD is to elucidate the pathogenesis of neuron degeneration in specific brain regions. We hypothesize that there is increased DNA oxidation in AD brain compared to age-matched control subjects, especially in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and that the changes in DNA bases will affect protein expression in mitochondria and contribute to neurodegeneration in AD. To test this hypothesis:1) We quantified multiple oxidized bases in nuclear DNA (nDNA) and mtDNA of frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes and cerebellum from late-stage AD (LAD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and age-matched control subjects …

Being Touched By Music: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutical Approach To Understanding Tranformational Musical Experience, Kurt Kumler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the lived experience of being personally transformed by listening to music. The investigation started with an exploration of the literature that relates to the phenomenon of musical transformation, including natural-scientific research as well as ideas from musicology, ethnomusicology, psychology, literature, and philosophy. This research was designed to access the nuanced and subjective aspects of the phenomenon by attending to the experience as lived by the experiencer. The method was qualitative in nature, based on a phenomenological-hermeneutical methodology. Throughout the research process, the researcher maintained a reflexive stance, attending to assumptions and preconceptions held about the phenomenon. This …

Identification Of Cis-Acting Elements Controlling Gene Expression In S. Neurona, Rajshekhar Y. Gaji Jan 2006

Identification Of Cis-Acting Elements Controlling Gene Expression In S. Neurona, Rajshekhar Y. Gaji

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Sarcocystis neurona is an apicomplexan parasite that is a major cause of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). During intracellular development of S. neurona, many genes are temporally regulated. To better understand gene regulation, it is important to identify and characterize regulatory elements controlling gene expression in S. neurona. To perform this study, it was essential to establish transfection system for this parasite. Hence, the 5 flanking region of the SnSAG1 gene was isolated from a genomic library and used to construct expression plasmids. In transient assays, the reporter molecules -galactosidase (-gal) and yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) were expressed by electroporated S. …

Teaching Ethics In And Outside Of Law Schools: What Works And What Doesn’T, Lisa G. Lerman

Scholarly Articles

No matter the setting or the audience, certain approaches are more likely than others to engage the students in learning the relevant law and exploring the array of dilemmas that lawyers encounter in practice. Some methods are more likely than others to help students to increase their ability to recognize ethical dilemmas and to understand the institutional dynamics and economic pressures that lead some lawyers to rationalize unethical conduct. On the other hand, some approaches to teaching ethics are almost certain to fail, to produce boredom, animosity, cynicism or alienation among participants. What follows is a short inventory of some …

Human Rights In Argentina, Scott Muttersbaugh Jan 2006

Human Rights In Argentina, Scott Muttersbaugh

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The election of populist Juan Peron in 1946 brought expanded economic and social rights to the working class. Consequently his popularity continued to rise, although the armed forces staged a coup in 1955, resulting in Peron’s nearly twenty-year exile. By 1973 Argentina’s economy had fallen apart and the still popular Peronist party gained the support needed for Peron’s return. With terrorism on the rise, the government granted a special executive authority to the military, allowing Peron to imprison people indefinitely without a trial, signaling a change in the government's priorities towards human rights.

Vomeronasal Sensory Neurons From Sternotherus Odoratus (Stinkpot/Musk Turtle) Respond To Chemosignals Via The Phospholipase C System, Jessica H. Brann, Debra A. Fadool

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The mammalian signal transduction apparatus utilized by vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs) in the vomeronasal organ (VNO) has been richly explored, while that of reptiles, and in particular, the stinkpot or musk turtle Sternotherus odoratus, is less understood. Given that the turtle's well-known reproductive and mating behaviors are governed by chemical communication, 247 patch-clamp recordings were made from male and female S. odoratus VSNs to study the chemosignal-activated properties as well as the second-messenger system underlying the receptor potential. Of the total neurons tested, 88 (35%) were responsive to at least one of five complex natural chemicals, some of which demonstrated …

Monitoring Peatland Damage And Restoration Using Testate Amoebae As Indicator Organisms, Emma Jane Vickery Jan 2006

Monitoring Peatland Damage And Restoration Using Testate Amoebae As Indicator Organisms, Emma Jane Vickery

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis has examined the response of testate amoebae communities to restoration at three peatland sites in the UK. It builds upon the use of testate amoebae analysis as a palaeoenvironmental tool by exploring the hypothesis that testate amoebae respond to hydrological conditions in restored mires. Previous research has found that testate amoebae act as good proxies for hydrological condition of intact mires and past conditions but little has been done on their reaction to conditions at damaged sites in the UK. The research aimed to further the understanding of testate amoebae ecology including seasonal variability of communities, a poorly …

The Rehnquist court began a revolution in the law of church and state that the Roberts Court may continue. This article analyzes Justice Scalia's rhetoric in dissents in Lee v. Weisman and McCreary County v. American Civil Liberties Union to suggest that the aim of the revolution, having been first enunciated as "equality" for religions values and expression, has now shifted to transformation of the Establishment Clause dialogue to permit a favored place in public life for "majority religion."

An Enquiry Into Fully Lived Moments, Philip Hawkins

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis explores facets of human agency and fully lived moments in the Cobra group, the ideas of Henri Lefebvre, and the ideas of Victor Burgin and psychoanalysis. Connective elements, and their relevance or not, through different disciplines, are a central part of its thinking. To this end some connections are found, some speculative connections are tracked, and there are some ideas that don't connect, yet come close to doing so but which become valuable for the examination of productive tensions and excesses about the lived in a cross-disciplinary enquiry. To begin with, an original set of historical and thematic …
