Welfare Caseloads And The 2001 Recession, Andrew Goodman-Bacon Oct 2005

Welfare Caseloads And The 2001 Recession, Andrew Goodman-Bacon

Award Winning Economics Papers

This paper investigates the effects of welfare reform policies on the number of families receiving welfare (caseloads) since the 2001 recession. 1996's welfare reform legislation was passed amidst the longest economic expansion in US history, making it hard for researchers to estimate the role of policy. Furthermore, caseload research has not sufficiently explored the effects of specific policy choices within a broader reform package. This paper uses state panel data to examine the effects of specific policies on caseloads since the recession. Results indicate that since the 2001 recession, generous financial incentives to work reduced the number of families on …

Parent And Student Voices On The First Year Of The Dc Opportunity Scholarship Program, Thomas Stewart, Patrick J. Wolf, Stephen Q. Cornman Oct 2005

Parent And Student Voices On The First Year Of The Dc Opportunity Scholarship Program, Thomas Stewart, Patrick J. Wolf, Stephen Q. Cornman

School Choice Demonstration Project

In the 50 years since economist Milton Friedman published “The Role of Government in Education” scholars and policy makers have been debating how parental choice through market mechanisms can and does operate in education. Market “optimists” argue that education is a service that can be produced under a variety of arrangements and that parents are natural education consumers. Market “pessimists” argue that education is a public good that should be produced in government-run schools, and that school choice programs suffer “market failure” because only advantaged families will have the resources and experience to choose effectively.

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

What does it mean to be a member of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ) community? When did LGBTQ community history begin? Where do queer communities differ? How do we broach these questions to document communities' experiences? And significantly, why is it important to document the histories of those who are defined as LGBTQ?

Literature Survey, Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment, John Redhouse Oct 2005

Literature Survey, Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment, John Redhouse

Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment

Literature survey relating to the record of decision approving the license for the White Mesa Mill, the only fully-licensed and operating conventional uranium mill in the United States. Besides inadequate environmental impact statements and even more inadequate environmental assessments leading up to this decision, there exists a dearth of independent technical and scientific information related to the radiological effects of the White Mesa Mill. Also sadly lacking in the mill licensing and license amendment process was and is the existence of sound ethnographic data documenting the significance of the uranium mill's impacts on Navajo cultural resources. However in the absence …
