The Void: Urban By Association, Brian Kessler Oct 2005

The Void: Urban By Association, Brian Kessler

Architecture Thesis Prep

"I contend that a regional and now increasingly global scale dictates the development of the city. At this super-urban scale the specificity of architecture is impractical and too expensive, yet the city adn architecture still persist, because of the fundamental human desire for intimate social interaction. Architecture, stripped of its unobtainable utopian ideals, still maintains its significance as the literal and symbolic framework of the urban condition; the space of intense, physical interaction, leading to the literal procreation of humanity and limitless possibilities for new unforeseen activity."

Building A Future With Our Past, Maureen T. O'Sullivan Oct 2005

Building A Future With Our Past, Maureen T. O'Sullivan

Architecture Thesis Prep

"I contend that the contrast of traditional and contemporary architectural building methods and program will visualize the process of change and allow for subsequent transformations of existing constructs. A disregard for traditional architecture will eventually leave us with no conception of our cultural past. These structures are a physical accumulation of our past that we can experience spatially and upon which we can build."

Salad Builders: An Architecture Of Modern Customizable Fast Food", Anthony Francis Oct 2005

Salad Builders: An Architecture Of Modern Customizable Fast Food", Anthony Francis

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The artificiality of architecture and nutrition of the fast food industry has become caustic to society by deteriorating the ideals by which modern design and health function."

Virtual Property, Joshua A.T. Fairfield Oct 2005

Virtual Property, Joshua A.T. Fairfield

Scholarly Articles

This article explores three new concepts in property law. First, the article defines an emerging property form - virtual property - which is not intellectual property, but that more efficiently governs rivalrous, persistent, and interconnected online resources. Second, the article demonstrates that the threat to high-value uses of internet resources is not the traditional tragedy of the commons that results in overuse. Rather, the naturally layered nature of the internet leads to overlapping rights of exclusion that cause underuse of internet resources: a tragedy of the anticommons. And finally, the article shows that the common law of property can act …

FLARR Pages

St Teresa of Avila.(1515-1582), since 1970 a Doctor of the Church, founder of the discalced Carmelite Order of Spain, is perhaps the most important figure of Spanish mysticism. She was, as well. despite almost insurmountable resistance, one of the greatest reformers of Spain. Her success was remarkable and she still serves as a model for women of today, with her "determination" to get things done in a male ·dominated world. The purpose of this article is to offer some considerations and suggestions for teaching certain aspects of St Teresa's life and times. Sources are recommended.

The Porter Five-Forces Industry Analysis Framework For Religious Nonprofits: A Conceptual Analysis, Michael E. Cafferky Oct 2005

The Porter Five-Forces Industry Analysis Framework For Religious Nonprofits: A Conceptual Analysis, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

Goold (1997) has argued that the Porter (1980) five-forces framework for industry analysis is not applicable to nonprofits. In light of recent essays (e.g. Miller, 2002) as well as literature from the world of religious nonprofit organizations and organization theory, the Porter framework is analyzed through a review of representative literature. The religious nonprofit arena was chosen for this conceptual analysis based on an assumed key difference between religious nonprofits and for-profit firms: the stronger influence that mission has in strategy formulation compared with the influence of the external environment. Implications for further research are suggested.
