Nicholas Reactions With Carboxylic Acids For The Synthesis Of Macrocyclic Diolides, Kevin M. Shea, Kristina D. Closser, Miriam M. Quintal

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

We have developed a new strategy for the preparation of diolides using a cascade of Nicholas reactions. The carboxylic acid nucleophiles in these reactions are virtually unstudied participants in transformations of this type. Using this methodology, a 16-membered cobalt-complexed cyclic diyne is available in 28% yield over eight steps (an average of 85% per step). We can also easily access the uncomplexed diolide in one additional step.

Physics

Charged hadrons in 0.15⊥<4  GeV/c associated with particles of p^trig_⊥>4  GeV/c are reconstructed in pp and Au+Au collisions at √s_NN=200  GeV. The associated multiplicity and p⊥magnitude sum are found to increase from pp to central Au+Au collisions. The associated p_⊥distributions, while similar in shape on the nearside, are significantly softened on the awayside in central Au+Au relative to pp and not much harder than that of inclusive hadrons. The results, consistent with jet quenching, suggest that the awayside fragments approach equilibration with the medium traversed.

The article discusses the status and probable future of the counterfeit license plate statute in Florida, Florida Statute Section 320.26(1)(a). It prohibits the possession of counterfeit license plates. However, it contains no explicit mens rea requirement. As a result, this law has been challenged repeatedly of late because it is punishable up to five years in prison and because it could potentially be used to punish innocent conduct.

Every day executive branch officials make thousands of decisions affecting our security and welfare. Homeland security officials screen tens of thousands of people at the border. They decide whose name gets on government “no fly lists.” Agencies freeze suspected terrorist assets, choose what companies to inspect for environmental violations, and decide whom to prosecute. This article describes how judicial review predictably and systematically fails to prevent abuse and promote organizational learning when government officials make many such choices using their discretion to target individuals or groups. It then proposes the use of quasi-judicial audits of executive discretion as a remedy. …

Should loss of earnings be compensated? The established law and economics wisdom considers pure economic loss as a transfer of wealth from the victim to a third party, whose earnings increase as a consequence of the accident. Such transfers do not amount to a social loss and, hence, should not be compensated. We revisit these arguments and show that the social loss should be calculated by taking into account that: (a) pure economic loss often involves impairment costs resulting from the fact that valuable resources cannot be temporarily used; and (b) the third-party earnings come at the cost of increased …
