Inter-Institutional Collaboration: A Case Study Of Factors Contributing To The Viability Of The Iowa Community College Online Consortium, Kent Johnson Jan 2005

Inter-Institutional Collaboration: A Case Study Of Factors Contributing To The Viability Of The Iowa Community College Online Consortium, Kent Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the competitive arena of distance education, the strategy of inter-institutional collaboration has been cast as a promising approach in reducing costs, expanding services, and demonstrating responsiveness. However, the work involved with collaborative arrangements has proven difficult, and the results have frequently failed to meet expectations.

The problem this research sought to address is that little is known about the factors involved in making distance education collaborations work. The Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC) was selected as a unit of analysis on the basis of purposeful sampling. The ICCOC, a comprehensive distance education collaboration involving seven member colleges, has …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

With the onset of the Iowa Quality Teacher Legislation, the Iowa Teaching Standards are mandated for use by all school districts in Iowa. These standards call for administrators to assist teachers in becoming self-reflective practitioners. The purpose of this study was to investigate administrative strategies employed by principals to assist teachers in becoming self-reflective toward the Iowa Teaching Standards. A secondary purpose of the study was to investigate the extent to which teachers are currently utilizing self-reflection as a method of improving their instructional effectiveness, as perceived by middle level teachers and principals in Iowa.

Four research questions were examined …

The Sec At 70: Time For Retirement?, Adam C. Pritchard Jan 2005

The Sec At 70: Time For Retirement?, Adam C. Pritchard

Articles

As one grows older, birthdays gradually shift from being celebratory events to more reflective occasions. One's 40th birthday is commemorated rather differently from one's 2lst, which is, in turn, celebrated quite differently from one's first. After a certain point, the individual birthdays become less important and it is the milestone years to whch we pay particular attention. Sadly for entities like the Securities and Exchange Commission, it is only the milestone years (the ones ending in five or zero, for some reason), that draw any attention at all. No one held a conference to celebrate the SEC's 67th anniversary. Clearly …

Yale Kamisar: A Principled Man For All Seasons, Douglas A. Kahn Jan 2005

Yale Kamisar: A Principled Man For All Seasons, Douglas A. Kahn

Articles

Yale Kamisar began his distinguished career as a law professor in 1957 at the University of Minnesota Law School. For three years prior to joining the Minnesota faculty, Yale had been an associate with the Washington, D.C. law firm of Covington & Burling specializing in antitrust law. Understandably, Yale and Minnesota assumed that he would devote the major part of his research and teaching to antitrust. At that time, the study of criminal law was near the bottom of the hierarchy of law school topics, and so young faculty often were assigned the task of teaching criminal law as the …

The Cyclical Transformations Of The Corporate Form: A Historical Perspective On Corporate Social Responsibility, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Jan 2005

The Cyclical Transformations Of The Corporate Form: A Historical Perspective On Corporate Social Responsibility, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

This article describes the transformations underwent by the corporate form from its Roman origins to the present. It shows that every time there was a shift in the role of the corporation, three theories of the corporation (the aggregate, artificial, and real entity theories) were brought forward in cyclical fashion. Every time, however, the real entity theory prevailed, and it was the dominant theory during periods ofstability in the relationship between the corporation, the shareholders, and the state. The article describes this evolution in detail, and then attempts to derive normative consequences for the legitimacy of corporate social responsibility (CSR). …

From Craft To Art: A Philosophy Of Jazz Pedagogy Developed From Performance, Educational And Personal Experiences, Thomas Lawrence Giampietro Jan 2005

From Craft To Art: A Philosophy Of Jazz Pedagogy Developed From Performance, Educational And Personal Experiences, Thomas Lawrence Giampietro

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Am I an artist? Many jazz musicians and educators are afraid to ask that question, and many may not even be sure of what it means to be an artist. Is artistry vital to the survival and evolution of the music? It is this writer's position that it is and that the very nature of jazz music demands artistry from its participants. If artistry is the jazz musician's goal, then the logical goal of jazz educators is to help facilitate artistry in their students. This goal should remain the same regardless of the level of the student. The level of …

The Economic Argument Against Estate Tax Repeal, Stephen Paul Skram Jan 2005

The Economic Argument Against Estate Tax Repeal, Stephen Paul Skram

Honors Program Theses

The estate tax is scheduled for repeal in 2010 and will be reinstated the following year. Congress is trying to make the repeal permanent, but is running into opposition. The public is becoming aware that only the wealthiest Americans would reap the benefits of estate tax repeal to the detriment of everyone else. This paper finds that estate tax repeal may not have any economic benefits, does not impose high compliance and administrative costs, taxes wealth that would remain untaxed without the levy, does not endanger the ability of small business owners and farmers to survive, encourages charitable bequests, and …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of A Loser-Pays Rule On The Decisions Of An American Litigant, Jaime Leigh Loos Jan 2005

An Analysis Of The Effect Of A Loser-Pays Rule On The Decisions Of An American Litigant, Jaime Leigh Loos

Honors Program Theses

Decisions made by litigants often do not reflect those most beneficial to society. A rule goveming fee allocation in tort cases should encourage meritorious suits and discourage frivolous suits. America is one of the only countries in the world that does not use a loser-pays rule to assign legal costs. Employing a loser-pays rule could make the legal system more efficient and more equitable. The effect of a loser-pays rule is analyzed by economic theory and empirical evidence, while considering possible limitations of the rule. A carefully applied system of loser-pays may positively affect the U.S. legal system.
