The Author's Name As A Trademark: A Perverse Perspective On The Moral Right Of "Paternity"?, Jane C. Ginsburg

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The U.S. Supreme Court in its 2003 decision in Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox, construing the Lanham Federal Trademarks Act, deprived authors of their principal legal means to enforce attribution rights in the U.S. I have elsewhere criticized the Dastar Court's analysis, and have urged amending the Copyright Act to provide express recognition of the attribution right. This time, however, I propose to reconsider the foundation for the attribution right; I draw on literary and historical sources to supplement legal arguments concerning the meaning of the author's name. I will suggest that, contrary to the usual characterization of this right …

Modeling And Control Of Magnetostrictive Actuators, Wei Zhang Jan 2005

Modeling And Control Of Magnetostrictive Actuators, Wei Zhang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Most smart actuators exhibit rate-dependant hysteresis when the working frequency is higher than 5Hz. Although the Preisach model has been a very powerful tool to model the static hysteresis, it cannot be directly used to model the dynamic hysteresis. Some researchers have proposed various generalizations of the Preisach operator to model the rate-dependant hysteresis, however, most of them are application-dependant and only valid for low frequency range. In this thesis, a first-order dynamic relay operator is proposed. It is then used to build a novel dynamic Preisach model. It can be used to model general dynamic hysteresis and is valid …

An Improved Method And Apparatus For Automated Design And Verificaton Of Integrated Circuits, Dragomir M. Nikolic Jan 2005

An Improved Method And Apparatus For Automated Design And Verificaton Of Integrated Circuits, Dragomir M. Nikolic

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools have always played an important role in Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) Circuit development. Two major linked roles are to reduce total design cycle time of Integrated Circuits (ICs) and increase profitability. Profitability can significantly be increased through quicker development and shorter time to market which in turn can be achieved through design automation. In addition to design cycle time reduction, design automation provides consistency and repeatability, which are critical for capturing and sharing of efficient design methods. Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) development and verification is a very manual and time consuming process. The …

Development And Validation Of A Special Purpose Sensor And Processor System To Calculate Equilibrium Moisture Content Of Wood, Phani Tangirala Jan 2005

Development And Validation Of A Special Purpose Sensor And Processor System To Calculate Equilibrium Moisture Content Of Wood, Phani Tangirala

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Percent Moisture Content (MC %) of wood is defined to be the weight of the moisture in the wood divided by the weight of the dry wood times 100%. Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC), moisture content at environmental equilibrium is a very important metric affecting the performance of wood in many applications. For best performance in many applications, the goal is to maintain this value between 6% and 8%. EMC value is a function of the temperature and the relative humidity of the surrounding air of wood. It is very important to maintain this value while processing, storing or finishing the …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cis/Cds And Cu2s/Cds Devices For Applications In Nano Structured Solar Cells, Visweswaran Jayaraman Jan 2005

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cis/Cds And Cu2s/Cds Devices For Applications In Nano Structured Solar Cells, Visweswaran Jayaraman

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Nano structured solar cells provide an opportunity for increased open circuit voltages and and short circuit currents in solar cells due to quantum confinement of the window and absorber materials and an increase in the optical path length for the incident light. In this study, both bulk and nano heterojunctions of CIS/CdS and Cu2S/CdS devices have been fabricated and studied on plain glass substrates and inside porous alumina templates to compare their performance. The devices have also been characterized SEM, XRD and JV measurements. The J-V curves have also been analyzed for series resistance, diode ideality factor and reverse saturation …

Design Of A Gait Acquisition And Analysis System For Assessing The Recovery Of Mice Post-Spinal Cord Injury, Casey Harr Jan 2005

Design Of A Gait Acquisition And Analysis System For Assessing The Recovery Of Mice Post-Spinal Cord Injury, Casey Harr

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Current methods of determining spinal cord recovery in mice, post-directed injury, are qualitative measures. This is due to the small size and quickness of mice. This thesis presents a design for a gait acquisition and analysis system able to capture the footfalls of a mouse, extract position and timing data, and report quantitative gait metrics to the operator. These metrics can then be used to evaluate the recovery of the mouse. This work presents the design evolution of the system, from initial sensor design concepts through prototyping and testing to the final implementation. The system utilizes a machine vision camera, …

An Organic Bovine Hydroxyapatite-Plga Composites For Bone Tissue Engineering, Harini Raman Jan 2005

An Organic Bovine Hydroxyapatite-Plga Composites For Bone Tissue Engineering, Harini Raman

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The objective of the present study was to synthesize porous, biodegradable poly (D, l- lactide-co-glycolide) PLGA-B-HA (Bovine hydroxyapatite) composite and evaluate the effect of ceramic content on bone marrow cell differentiation in vitro. A macroporous biodegradable PLGA-B-HA composite with the pore size varying from 0.1 to 1000?? and a highly interconnected structure was fabricated using the freeze-drying/lyophilization technique. A pilot study was done to determine the effects of B-HA on to the osteoblast function. The main study was done to determine the effect of the increase in B-HA concentration on to the mesenchymal stem cell differentiation. Morphological characteristics of the …

Bone Engineering Of The Ulna Of Rabbit, Amanda Peter Hart Jan 2005

Bone Engineering Of The Ulna Of Rabbit, Amanda Peter Hart

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Repair of bone defects is a major challenge in orthopaedic surgery. Current bone graft treatments, including autografts, allografts and xenografts, have many limitations making it necessary to develop a biomaterial to be a bone graft substitute. One such biomaterial is bioactive resorbable silica-calcium phosphate nanocomposite (SCPC). SCPC was processed using a 3D rapid prototyping technique and sintered at different temperatures to create porous scaffolds. SEM analyses and mercury intrusion porosimetry showed SCPC to be highly porous with micro- and nanopores. BET analysis indicated that SCPC had high surface area. Mechanical testing demonstrated that SCPC had a compressive strength similar to …
