The Use Of Microsatellite Dna Fingerprinting For Aquaculture And Fisheries Science, Arpita Choudhury Jan 2005

The Use Of Microsatellite Dna Fingerprinting For Aquaculture And Fisheries Science, Arpita Choudhury

Open Access Dissertations

In the past, world fisheries appeared to have unlimited growth and potential. Although consumer demand continues to increase, landings from traditional capture fisheries have fallen dramatically. This has led to the growth of world aquaculture production as well as the development of marine conservation science. It has also fostered the use of molecular techniques in the aquatic sciences. Several types of molecular markers have been employed to assess stock structure, genetic variability, and kinship in fisheries and aquaculture. Currently microsatellite markers appear to be one of the most appropriate tools for research in these areas. The overall objective of this …

Regulation Of Cytochrome P450-3a (Cyp3a) And Pregnane X Receptor (Pxr): Implications To Drug-Drug Interactions, Karuna Sachdeva Jan 2005

Regulation Of Cytochrome P450-3a (Cyp3a) And Pregnane X Receptor (Pxr): Implications To Drug-Drug Interactions, Karuna Sachdeva

Open Access Dissertations

The nuclear receptor, pregnane x receptor (PXR) is a key regulator of expression of genes involved in drug metabolism and transport. Among these genes, the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme superfamily is involved in the metabolism of more than 90% of clinically used drugs and xenobiotics. Among the CYP450 enzymes, CYP3A enzyme sub-family is the most abundantly expressed in the adult liver and intestine and is responsible for the metabolism of almost two-thirds of prescription drugs. One of the interesting features of the CYP3A enzymes is that their expression can be regulated by either enzyme inhibition or enzyme induction. The induction …

Evaluation Of A Wind Power Parameterization Using Tower Observations, Steven M. Lazarus, Jennifer Bewley Jan 2005

Evaluation Of A Wind Power Parameterization Using Tower Observations, Steven M. Lazarus, Jennifer Bewley

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The spatial and temporal components of a published wind power parameterization method are evaluated using observed winds (9 m to 90 m) from 7 years of data collected at four towers in the Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral Air Force Station network. The temporal component is governed by two parameterization inputs which represent the amplitude and mean of an assumed sinusoidal diurnal variation of the ratio of the 80 m to 10 m winds, respectively. Comparison with tower observations shows that the estimates of the mean ratio are robust but biased high, indicating that the temporal variation of the observations can …

Three Choral Compositions By Alice Parker: A Conductor's Analysis Of Songstream, Angels And Challengers, And Songs From "The Dragon Quilt", Jennifer Sue King

LSU Major Papers

Alice Parker (b. 1925) has earned a place of respect in choral music through more than half a century of work in arranging and composition, conducting, teaching and writing. Her works reflect diverse interests, from short, unison pieces for treble choir, to the complexity of unaccompanied madrigals, to major choral/orchestral works and operas. Conductors and singers all over the world have been influenced by her writings, seminars and SINGS, and she continues to extol the value of music, both in the concert hall and as a part of everyday life. Scholarly research of her choral compositions is limited, and further …

American Wholesalers And Distributor’S Directory [Book Review], Leticia Camacho Jan 2005

American Wholesalers And Distributor’S Directory [Book Review], Leticia Camacho

Faculty Publications

At the beginning of the Internet era business experts predicted that wholesale distributors would disappear. They thought that in the new electronic world the middleman would be cut and manufacturers would “source and sell” directly to customers. Many proclaimed that this was the end of traditional selling and distribution. The reality, however, is that there are still a few traditional wholesalers outperforming the market. The reason for their success is their concentration in local markets, local suppliers, distribution channels and prime licensing. The new edition of the American Wholesalers and Distributors Directory provides access information to these wholesalers and distributors.

What Is A Copy?, Jeffrey Malkan Jan 2005

What Is A Copy?, Jeffrey Malkan

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Copyright law encourages artistic and literary expression by policing copying and embracing the value of originality. To some degree, however, originality comes into focus only through the lens of copying, its unacknowledged, dark twin. The questions I ask in this inquiy are both "what" and "why "? What is the difference between a work and a copy? If there is a difference, why is the copy less worthy than the original? In my consideration of these questions, I draw upon a body of theory that attempts to explain the unequal status conferred by the art world on perceptually indiscernible objects-authentic …

Organizing A K-12 Ai Curriculum Using Philosophy Of The Mind, Glenn W. Ellis, Eleanor C. Ory, Nalini Bhushan Jan 2005

Organizing A K-12 Ai Curriculum Using Philosophy Of The Mind, Glenn W. Ellis, Eleanor C. Ory, Nalini Bhushan

Engineering: Faculty Publications

High school teams competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition and students of all ages building Lego robots have become increasingly common in K-12 education. Although robotics can be an excellent means to introduce technology and engineering design into the classroom, the scope of artificial intelligence (AI) is much greater. To help students learn about these topics in a meaningful way and to see how they fit together, this paper presents a concept map that uses principles from philosophy of the mind to organize AI topics. This approach supports a deeper understanding of AI, while making philosophical issues that interest teenagers …

The descriptions and examples of pedagogical methods, models, and materials used to engage the teachers in paper engineering through their immersion into the world of pop-up books, are included. Pedagogical strategies and project-based curriculum design of the institute reflect 'best practices' as informed by current cognitive science literature on teaching and learning are discussed. Social-collaborative context during the summer institute that would guide and support teachers' developing understandings and skills in engineering education is …

Kinetic Parameters Of Glass Transition In Glassy Se_{1 - X}Sb_X Alloys, R. S. Tiwari, N. Mehta, R. K. Shukla, A. Kumar Jan 2005

Kinetic Parameters Of Glass Transition In Glassy Se_{1 - X}Sb_X Alloys, R. S. Tiwari, N. Mehta, R. K. Shukla, A. Kumar

Turkish Journal of Physics

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is performed at different heating rates under non-isothermal conditions to study the glass transition kinetics of glassy Se_{1 - x}Sb_x (x = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 and 0.10) alloys. The activation energy of glass transition E_t has been calculated using the two different non-isothermal methods. One of the two methods is based on the theory of glass transition kinetics and structural relaxation as developed by Moynihan and other workers, while the other relation is well-known Kissinger's relation. The results show that the values of E_t determined from both the methods are in good agreement with one …

Crystalline Textures On The Al-Ni-Co Quasicrystal Surface, Mehmet Erbudak, Jean-Nicolas Longchamp, Yves Weisskopf Jan 2005

Crystalline Textures On The Al-Ni-Co Quasicrystal Surface, Mehmet Erbudak, Jean-Nicolas Longchamp, Yves Weisskopf

Turkish Journal of Physics

We have generated cubic Al alloys as commensurate single crystals on the tenfold-symmetry surface of the quasicrystalline Al-Ni-Co alloy by ion bombarding its surface. We find that the crystal-quasicrystal interface contains several alignments of mutual high-symmetry directions and planes. In order to explore the structural matching conditions at the crystal-quasicrystal interface, we have grown Al films on the decagonal surface of Al-Ni-Co by vapor deposition. The initial growth mode of Al is commensurate. As the coverage is increased, Al starts to grow in cubic textures breaking into multi-twinned, few-nanometer- large domains. The symmetry of the substrate determines thereby the orientation …

The North American gravity database as well as databases from Canada, Mexico, and the United States are being revised to improve their coverage, versatility, and accuracy. An important part of this effort is revising procedures for calculating gravity anomalies, taking into account our enhanced computational power, improved terrain databases and datums, and increased interest in more accurately defining long-wavelength anomaly components. Users of the databases may note minor differences between previous and revised database values as a result of these procedures. Generally, the differences do not impact the interpretation of local anomalies but do improve regional anomaly studies. The most …

Credit Where It Counts: The Community Reinvestment Act And Its Critics, Michael S. Barr Jan 2005

Credit Where It Counts: The Community Reinvestment Act And Its Critics, Michael S. Barr

Articles

Despite the depth and breadth of U.S. credit markets, low- and moderate-income communities and minority borrowers have not historically enjoyed full access to credit. The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) was enacted in 1977 to help overcome barriers to credit that these groups faced. Scholars have long leveled numerous critiques against CRA as unnecessary, ineffectual, costly, and lawless. Many have argued that CRA should be eliminated. By contrast, I contend that market failures and discrimination justify governmental intervention and that CRA is a reasonable policy response to these problems. Using recent empirical evidence, I demonstrate that over the last decade CRA …
