Nano-Coatings On Carbon Structures For Interfacial Modification, Rajasekhar Venkata Pulikollu Jan 2005

Nano-Coatings On Carbon Structures For Interfacial Modification, Rajasekhar Venkata Pulikollu

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Surface modification of materials is a rapidly growing field as structures become smaller, more integrated and complex. It opens up the possibility of combining the optimum bulk properties of a material with optimized surface properties such as enhanced bonding, corrosion resistance, reactivity, stress transfer, and thermal, optical or electrical behavior. Therefore, surface functionalization or modification can be an enabling step in a wide variety of modern applications. In this dissertation several surface modification approaches on carbon foam and carbon nano-fibers will be discussed. These are recently developed sp 2 graphitic carbon based structures that have significant potential in aerospace, automotive …

Pattern Recognition Via Machine Learning With Genetic Decision-Programming, Carl C. Hoff Jan 2005

Pattern Recognition Via Machine Learning With Genetic Decision-Programming, Carl C. Hoff

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In the intersection of pattern recognition, machine learning, and evolutionary computation is a new search technique by which computers might program themselves. That technique is called genetic decision-programming. A computer can gain the ability to distinguish among the things that it needs to recognize by using genetic decision-programming for pattern discovery and concept learning. Those patterns and concepts can be easily encoded in the spines of a decision program (tree or diagram). A spine consists of two parts: (1) the test-outcome pairs along a path from the program's root to any of its leaves and (2) the conclusion in that …

Calcareous Nannoplankton Response To Late Albian Oceanic Anoxic Event 1d In The Western North Atlantic, David K. Watkins, Matthew J. Cooper, Paul A. Wilson Jan 2005

Calcareous Nannoplankton Response To Late Albian Oceanic Anoxic Event 1d In The Western North Atlantic, David K. Watkins, Matthew J. Cooper, Paul A. Wilson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Well-preserved nannofossil and stable isotope records from the mid-Cretaceous of Ocean Drilling Project Leg 171B (western North Atlantic) indicate cyclical, productivity-based variations in surface water characteristics, suggesting orbitally paced changes in upwelling intensity and the strength of deep mixing associated with oceanic anoxic event (OAE)1d. Paleontologic and isotopic evidence suggest that collapse of upper water column stratification associated with OAE1d was preceded by approximately 1 m.y. of progressively decreasing water column stability and increasing surface water fertility. Thirteen species went extinct during a short (ca. 200 k.y.) interval associated with OAE1d. Nine of these have morphological characters suggesting adaptation to …

Global Venue Controls Are Coming: A Reply To Professor Lopucki, Samuel Bufford Jan 2005

Global Venue Controls Are Coming: A Reply To Professor Lopucki, Samuel Bufford

Faculty Scholarship

This Article details my disagreements with Professor Lynn LoPucki's article "Global and out of Control" (79 Am. Bankr. L.J. 79). Part I discusses universalism and territorialism, especially the modified version of universalism that I support. Part II examines the international venue provisions of the Model Law and the EU Regulation. Part III introduces the relevant venue shopping cases. Only two groups of cases are relevant for the purpose of this paper: the French and German subsidiaries of Daisytek and Eurofood (a subsidiary of Parmalat SpA, the Italian conglomerate). None of the other cases that Professor LoPucki discusses was subject to …

The Vocation Of International Arbitrators, Catherine A. Rogers Jan 2005

The Vocation Of International Arbitrators, Catherine A. Rogers

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay examines the vocation of the international arbitrator. I begin by evaluating, under sociological frameworks developed in literature on Weberian theories of the professions, how the arbitration community is organized and regulated. Arbitrators operate in a largely private and unregulated market for services, access to which is essentially controlled by what might be considered a governing cartel of the most elite arbitrators. I conclude my description with an account of how recently international arbitrators have begun to display a professional impulse, meaning efforts to present themselves as a profession to obtain the benefits of professionalization. Professional status is often …

An Evaluation Of Federal Tax Policy Based On Judeo-Christian Ethics, Susan Pace Hamill Jan 2005

An Evaluation Of Federal Tax Policy Based On Judeo-Christian Ethics, Susan Pace Hamill

Articles

This article severely criticizes the Bush Administrations tax policies under the moral principles of JudeoChristian ethics I first document that JudeoChristian ethics is the most relevant moral analysis for tax policy because almost eighty percent of Americans and well over ninety percent of the Congress including President Bush claim to adhere to the Christian or Jewish faiths I also show that evaluating federal tax policy under JudeoChristian principles not only passes constitutional muster but is also appropriate under the norms of a democracy I then provide a complete theological framework that can be applied to any tax policy structure Using …

Navigating Dangerous Constitutional Straits: A Prolegomenon On The Federal Marriage Amendment And The Disenfranchisement Of Sexual Minorities, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr., E. Gary Spitko Jan 2005

Navigating Dangerous Constitutional Straits: A Prolegomenon On The Federal Marriage Amendment And The Disenfranchisement Of Sexual Minorities, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr., E. Gary Spitko

Articles

Navigating Dangerous Constitutional Straits A Prolegomenon on the Federal Marriage Amendment and the Disenfranchisement of Sexual Minorities considers the nature of the constitutional amendment process and the Supreme Courts historical approach to incorporating new amendments into the existing constitutional text Professors Krotoszynski and Spitko argue that given the Supreme Courts consistent narrow reading of new amendments to preserve preexisting constitutional rights the Federal Marriage Amendment must be broadly written to override expressly due process and equal protection guarantees against not only sexual orientation discrimination but also gender discrimination In our view however if a proposed Federal Marriage Amendment were sufficiently …

Effects Of Unilateral Extraction Treatment On Arch Symmetry And Occlusion, Theodore William Struhs Jan 2005

Effects Of Unilateral Extraction Treatment On Arch Symmetry And Occlusion, Theodore William Struhs

Theses and Dissertations

Occlusal asymmetries are common in orthodontic patients. A treatment option for correcting moderate asymmetries is asymmetric extractions. This study evaluated post-treatment dental arch symmetry in patients treated with unilateral premolar extractions. Post-treatment casts of 60 patients were divided into four treatment groups based on the history of occlusal asymmetry and the treatment plan. DesignCAD3000 software (Upperspace Corporation, Pryor, OK) was used to evaluate asymmetrically treated arches for symmetry. The four treatment groups were compared to identify differences in arch asymmetry based on treatment. The lateral incisor and canine were found to be more palatal on the extraction side in patients …

Investigation Of Surface States And Device Surface Charging In Nitride Materials Using Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy, Mohammed Shahriar Sabuktagin Jan 2005

Investigation Of Surface States And Device Surface Charging In Nitride Materials Using Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy, Mohammed Shahriar Sabuktagin

Theses and Dissertations

In this work Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy (SKPM) was used to characterize surface states and device surface charging in nitride materials. Samples grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE), Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) and Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy (HVPE) typically show a high surface band bending of about 1 eV. In an n-type sample with 3X1017 cm-3 carrier concentration, 1 eV upward band bending corresponds to 1.7X1012 cm-2 trapped charge density in the surface states. Under continuous ultraviolet (UV) illumination up to 0.6 eV surface photo voltage effect could be observed in some samples, which further indicates that surface …

Real Time Frequency Analysis Of Signals From Lasso Catheter For Radiofrequency Ablation During Atrial Fibrillation, Prashant Yadav

Theses and Dissertations

Real time spectrum analysis of signals obtained through lasso catheter during radiofrequency ablation of pulmonary vein was performed to determine the channel with dominant frequency. Threshold algorithm was used for signals which could be classified as type I and type II AF. Type III AF Signals which were highly fractionated or differentiated were evaluated for frequency content by performing Fast Fourier Transform. Data from Seven patients was collected and an episode of 180 ± 40 seconds was recorded and analyzed for each pulmonary vein that showed electrical activation. Frequency spectra for one second segment of signal for each channel were …

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker Jan 2005

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Origin-Destination studies are often used in transportation planning to determine the travel patterns (origin-destination matrix) of vehicles and goods in a particular area. Given these travel patterns, the impacts of alternative solutions to current and future transportation problems can be evaluated. Therefore, it is important that the travel patterns be accurately measured. However, it is not always clear what data collection method should be used to obtain the type of data needed, while maximizing quality and minimizing the time and cost. The objective of this research is to review both conventional and experimental techniques for roadside station OD studies, and …

An Evaluation Of The Cost-Effectiveness Of Warranty Contracts In Indiana, Priyanka Singh, Samuel Labi, Bob Mccullouch, Kumares C. Sinha Jan 2005

An Evaluation Of The Cost-Effectiveness Of Warranty Contracts In Indiana, Priyanka Singh, Samuel Labi, Bob Mccullouch, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

In a bid to ensure cost-effective highway construction practices, highway agencies constantly seek ways to accelerate project design and delivery through implementation of innovative contracting and procurement practices. The concept of warranties, which is one of such promising practices, involves a shift of the burden of construction quality control, product performance and product maintenance from the owner to the contractor. As such, warranty projects are expected to enhance product quality and service life, and ultimately, reduced life-cycle cost. The expected benefits of warranty projects, however, could be offset by their historically higher construction costs. It is therefore necessary to evaluate …

Coverage Of Reproductive Technologies Under Employer-Sponsored Health Care Plans, Elizabeth Pendo Jan 2005

Coverage Of Reproductive Technologies Under Employer-Sponsored Health Care Plans, Elizabeth Pendo

Articles

The federal courts have issued two important decisions regarding non-discriminatory insurance coverage of conditions and treatments associated with sex, disability or both, such as prescription contraception and infertility treatment. Cases like Erickson and Saks are important because, as ERISA scholars know, state law mandates regarding coverage are unlikely to lead to uniform results due to the structure of ERISA's preemption provisions, and none of the federal proposals addressing infertility treatment or prescription contraception have been enacted to date.

What I would like to do is outline the impact of ERISA in this area, and offer some thoughts on one of …

Telling Stories About Health Insurance: Using New Films In The Classroom, Elizabeth Pendo

Articles

In keeping with the theme of "The Mass Media's Influence on Health Law and Policy," this essay is designed to share my experience using clips from three recent popular films as a method of enhancing coverage and discussion of legal and policy issues surrounding the private health insurance system, and to provide some practical advice for others interested in doing the same. It builds upon a presentation that I gave along with Professors Timothy S. Hall and Ross D. Silverman at the 2004 Health Law Teachers Conference entitled "Health Law, Policy and Media," and was inspired by Professor Paul Bergman's …

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

In serving the public interest, the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) aims to set high quality auditing and assurance standards for nonissuers that are understandable, clear, and capable of consistent application, thereby serving to enhance the quality and uniformity of practice. In doing so, the ASB seeks to balance the needs of a wide range of users, including auditors, those responsible for governance, regulators, and the public in general. Until now, the accounting profession has not expressly defined imperatives used to describe different degrees of the auditor's responsibility when conducting audit engagements in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards and attestation …
