Effects Of Food Sources And Culture Conditions On Feeding Behaviour And Growth Rates Of Nile Tilapia Fry (Oreochromis Niloticus), Latifa Juma Rashid Al-Shamsi

Theses

The importance of fish aquaculture in general as an alternative source of animal protein, is raised during this century after the significant reduction of natural marine resources. Such reduction has increased the interest of many countries as well as international agencies in worldwide food security, especially for developing countries. The success of any aquaculture is chiefly judged by its economic development, which always depends on the management of producing acceptable marketing size and weight of fish in short time. In the last few decades, many aquacultures failed in balancing between the financial input and the resultant income. That is due …

Financing Strategies Of The R & D Firm, Lawrence Fogelberg, John M, Griffith Jan 2005

Financing Strategies Of The R & D Firm, Lawrence Fogelberg, John M, Griffith

Finance Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the financing strategies of the R&D firm. Our hypotheses are based on Cho's (1992) game theory model where the firm develops a product but needs additional financing to bring it to market. The model generates a particularly rich set of hypotheses: 1) to fund the completion of its project and bring its product to market, the firm initiates negotiations with an established firm; 2) the majority of the acquisitions will be partial cash acquisitions through private secondary offerings. Confirming the model's hypotheses, we find that the majority of the acquisitions are partial cash acquisitions by significantly larger …

Computing Rigid Components Of Pseudo-Triangulation Mechanisms In Linear Time, Jack Snoeyink, Ileana Streinu Jan 2005

Computing Rigid Components Of Pseudo-Triangulation Mechanisms In Linear Time, Jack Snoeyink, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We investigate the problem of detecting rigid components (maximal Laman subgraphs) in a pseudotriangulation mechanism and in arbitrary pointed planar frameworks.F or general Laman graphs with some missing edges, it is known that rigid components can be computed in O(n2) time. Here we make substantial use of the special geometry of pointed pseudo-triangulation mechanisms to achieve linear time. The main application is a more robust implementation and a substantial reduction in numerical computations for the solution to the Carpenter's Rule problem given by the second author.

Pseudo-Triangulations, Rigidity And Motion Planning, Ileana Streinu Jan 2005

Pseudo-Triangulations, Rigidity And Motion Planning, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a combinatorial approach to planning non-colliding trajectories for a polygonal bar-and-joint framework with n vertices. It is based on a new class of simple motions induced by expansive one-degree-of-freedom mechanisms, which guarantee noncollisions by moving all points away from each other. Their combinatorial structure is captured by pointed pseudo-triangulations, a class of embedded planar graphs for which we give several equivalent characterizations and exhibit rich rigidity theoretic properties. The main application is an efficient algorithm for the Carpenter's Rule Problem: convexify a simple bar-and-joint planar polygonal linkage using only non-self-intersecting planar motions. A step of the algorithm …

In Praise Of Carbon: Genre And The 1996 Nobel Lectures In Chemistry By Christian Fredrick Casper, Christian Fredrick Casper

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Using genre theory along with the hierarchy of scientific statement types of Latour and Woolgar (1979) and the scientific stases and scientific topoi of Prelli (1989), this thesis analyzes the three Nobel lectures in chemistry from 1996 to discern the characteristics of ceremonial discourse in science and its relation to scientific ethos. Throughout, the Nobel lectures are analyzed in reference to the original research reports published in the scientific literature. The unique social context of the Nobel lectures results in a distinct genre with textual characteristics that include statements with little moderation or hedging, arguments for the long-term significance of …

Quality Management In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton Jan 2005

Quality Management In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton

All Books

Higher education institutions have traditionally vied for renown for quality education, with external measurements such as achievement levels of graduating students and later graduate success as two evidences of that quality. In some countries external monitoring of final examinations has provided a measuring rod of institutional success; in others, other performance indicators have been used. In more recent years, however, significant focus has shifted internationally not just to evidence of institutional outcomes, but the internal processes by which quality is assured. Coupled with this has been an increased emphasis on the more formative elements of achieving quality, not just in …

Strategic Planning In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton Jan 2005

Strategic Planning In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton

All Books

Texts on strategic planning are numerous, particularly in relation to the business sector, and higher education has often largely employed a business model in its own approaches to developing strategy. However, in more recent years writers have focused on the specific needs of the higher education environment in planning. This booklet seeks to capture the essence of the debates on strategy in planning, in order to provide a framework for higher education planning that will meet the best standards of practice internationally.

Haemophilus Influenzae Modulins In Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Airway Inflammation, Gitanjali Kundu Jan 2005

Haemophilus Influenzae Modulins In Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Airway Inflammation, Gitanjali Kundu

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Nontypeable H. influenzae (NTHi) causes repeated respiratory infections characterized by a brisk inflammatory response that results in the expression and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. We hypothesized that secreted and cell asssociated NTHi proteins mediate cellular interactions with respiratory epithelial cells, leading to the production of interleukin (IL)-8. We exposed human tracheal epithelial cells to H. influenzae strain Rd and compared the resulting profiles of IL-8 secretion. Putative H. influenzae Rd modulins were enriched from culture supernatant fluid. Proteome analysis of the enriched fractions revealed 27 candidate proteins. Further analysis of four proteins, ClpB, OmpP2, TonB, and RelA, suggested a potential …

Duration Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes Differentially Affects P38-Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (Mapk) Phosphorylation In Renal And Vascular Dysfunction, H. Chen, S. Brahmbhatt, A. Gupta, Avadhesh C. Sharma

PCOM Scholarly Works

Background: In the present study we tested the hypothesis that progression of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes (14-days to 28-days) would produce renal and vascular dysfunction that correlate with altered p38- mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK) phosphorylation in kidneys and thoracic aorta. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats (350-400 g) were randomized into three groups: sham (N = 6), 14-days diabetic (N = 6) and 28-days diabetic rats (N = 6). Diabetes was induced using a single tail vein injection of STZ (60 mg/kg, I.V.) on the first day. Rats were monitored for 28 days and food, water intake and plasma glucose levels were …

Ozone Degradation Of Off-Flavors In Catfish, Tameka Lashon Dew Jan 2005

Ozone Degradation Of Off-Flavors In Catfish, Tameka Lashon Dew

LSU Master's Theses

In the United States aquaculture is a billion dollar industry. Aquaculture is essentially the production of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions. Although conditions are controlled to a certain degree, absolute control is not possible. This reason alone is a huge problem that can cost the industry millions of dollars a year. In catfish, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are two compounds are primarily responsible for imparting a musty/earthy off-flavor. Off- flavors are secondary metabolites of some blue-green algae and actinomycete bacteria. When present in fish tissue they create an undesirable taste. Different approaches have been used in order to alleviate the problem …

Citizen Standing To Enforce Anti-Cruelty Laws By Obtaining Injunctions: The North Carolina Experience, William A. Reppy Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

North Carolina law authorizes citizen standing for the enforcement of anti-cruelty laws, thus supplementing criminal prosecution by means not used in any other state. Citizens, cities, counties and animal welfare organizations can enforce animal cruelty laws through a civil injunction. This article explores the various amendments to North Carolina's civil enforcement legislation and the present law's strengths and weaknesses. The author suggests an ideal model anti-cruelty civil remedies statute.

Strengths And Resilience In Chinese Immigrant Families: An Initial Effort Of Inquiry, Yan Ruth Xia, Zhi George Zhou, Xiaolin Xie Jan 2005

Strengths And Resilience In Chinese Immigrant Families: An Initial Effort Of Inquiry, Yan Ruth Xia, Zhi George Zhou, Xiaolin Xie

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The landscape of American demography has changed dramatically since the middle of the 20th century. Research indicates that the number of immigrants to the United States will continue to increase rapidly over the next three decades (Day, 1996). As the immigrant population grows, so does the necessity for family researchers to build theories to describe and explain the experiences of the new immigrant families. The research that we present here is aimed at expanding the knowledge base in relation to the resilience of newcomers in the Midwest; this study involved the use of both qualitative (holistic) and quantitative (scientific) methods. …

Incompressible Finite Elements Via Hybridization. Part I: The Stokes System In Two Space Dimensions, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jan 2005

Incompressible Finite Elements Via Hybridization. Part I: The Stokes System In Two Space Dimensions, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we introduce a new and efficient way to compute exactly divergence-free velocity approximations for the Stokes equations in two space dimensions. We begin by considering a mixed method that provides an exactly divergence-free approximation of the velocity and a continuous approximation of the vorticity. We then rewrite this method solely in terms of the tangential fluid velocity and the pressure on mesh edges by means of a new hybridization technique. This novel formulation bypasses the difficult task of constructing an exactly divergence-free basis for velocity approximations. Moreover, the discrete system resulting from our method has fewer degrees …

Curvature Of The Weinhold Metric For Thermodynamical Systems With 2 Degrees Of Freedom, Manuel Santoro, Serge Preston Jan 2005

Curvature Of The Weinhold Metric For Thermodynamical Systems With 2 Degrees Of Freedom, Manuel Santoro, Serge Preston

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this work the curvature of Weinhold (thermodynamical) metric is studied in the case of systems with two thermodynamical degrees of freedom. Conditions for the Gauss curvature R to be zero, positive or negative are worked out. Signature change of the Weinhold metric and the corresponding singular behavior of the curvature at the phase boundaries are studied. Cases of systems with the constant Cv, including Ideal and Van der Waals gases, and that of Berthelot gas are discussed in detail.

Aterf4 And Aterf7 Are Involved In The Abscisic Acid Signaling Response In Arabidopsis., Zhen Yang Jan 2005

Aterf4 And Aterf7 Are Involved In The Abscisic Acid Signaling Response In Arabidopsis., Zhen Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

ERFs (ethylene-responsive element binding factors) belong to a large family of transcription factors that are found exclusively in plants. A small subfamily of ERF proteins can act as transcriptional repressors. The Arabidopsis genome contains eight ERF repressors, namely AtERF3, AtERF4, AtERF7, AtERF8, AtERF9, AtERF10, AtERF11, and AtERF12. The different ERF repressors show differential expression, suggesting that they may have different function. The expression of AtERF4 can be induced by ethylene, jasmonic acid, or abscisic acid. AtERF7 can be induced by abscisic acid only. Using a transient expression system, we demonstrated that AtERF4 and AtERF7 can function as transcriptional repressors. By …

Polygamy, Prostitution, And The Federalization Of Immigration Law, Kerry Abrams Jan 2005

Polygamy, Prostitution, And The Federalization Of Immigration Law, Kerry Abrams

Faculty Scholarship

When Congress banned the immigration of Chinese prostitutes with the Page Law of 1875, it was the first restrictive federal immigration statute. Yet most scholarship treats the passage of the Page Law as a relatively unimportant event, viewing the later Chinese Exclusion Act as the crucial landmark in the federalization of immigration law. This Article argues that the Page Law was not a minor statute targeting a narrow class of criminals, but rather an attempt to prevent Chinese women in general from immigrating to the United States. Most Chinese women migrating to the United States in the early 1870s were …
