Ethnicity And Crime: Criminal Behavior Redefined, Noel Otu, Nancy A. Horton Nov 2005

Ethnicity And Crime: Criminal Behavior Redefined, Noel Otu, Nancy A. Horton

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Studies dealing with the definition of crime have primarily been concerned with developing hypotheses and theories of universal crime commission and definition. These theories of human behavior may appear plausible on paper but do not work well with people. All the theories of human behavior contain some truth. However, variables do not function one at a time nor can one theory explain all human behavior. These reasons justify studying human behavior from a social context perspective. This paper examines why one ethnic group can be heard praising a behavior while another ethnic group is doing the opposite. Factually, ethnic definition …

Exploring Police Relations With The Immigrant Minority In The Context Of Racism And Discrimination: A View From Turku, Finland, Stephen Egharevba, Lauri Hannikainen

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Citizens and immigrant minorities come into contact with the police in various circumstances, either as witnesses, victims of crime, or even as suspects. The present study is an attempt to examine issues concerning racism and discrimination in police/immigrant relations in Finland under this ircumstances, which to our knowledge has not received the academic scholastic investigation it deserves. Furthermore, this is also an attempt to look at police/immigrant everyday interactions to help in understanding this relationship. The research was carried out by means of a questionnaire (the sampled respondents consisting of forty-seven graduating police cadets a day before their graduation from …

The Karakoram Anomaly? Glacier Expansion And The ‘Elevation Effect,’ Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt Nov 2005

The Karakoram Anomaly? Glacier Expansion And The ‘Elevation Effect,’ Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

In the late 1990s widespread evidence of glacier expansion was found in the central Karakoram, in contrast to a worldwide decline of mountain glaciers. The expansions were almost exclusively in glacier basins from the highest parts of the range and developed quickly after decades of decline. Exceptional numbers of glacier surges were also reported. Unfortunately, there has been no on-going measurement of climatic or glaciological variables at these elevations. The present article examines possible explanations for this seemingly anomalous behavior, using evidence from short-term monitoring programs, low-altitude weather stations, and the distinctive environmental characteristics of the region. The latter involve …

Crafting Qualitative Research Articles On Marriages And Families, Sarah H. Matthews Nov 2005

Crafting Qualitative Research Articles On Marriages And Families, Sarah H. Matthews

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

This paper aims to assist those who do qualitative research in the field of marriage and family to reduce the number of rejections received in response to article submissions. Recurring shortcomings identified by reviewers and suggestions made to authors about revising papers are organized using headings traditionally used in a research article—introduction and literature review, method, results, and discussion. Considerations stemming from the fact that data on marriages and families are produced largely through interviews also are addressed.

Increased Agonistic Behavior In Hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica With A Reduction Of Food At Artificial Feeders, November 2005, Taegan A. Mcmahon Nov 2005

Increased Agonistic Behavior In Hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica With A Reduction Of Food At Artificial Feeders, November 2005, Taegan A. Mcmahon

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study looked at the change in agonistic behaviors of hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae) with the reduction of an established food source at la Estación Biológica de Monteverde (1567m elevation), Costa Rica. There were three treatment periods: three feeders (ten days), one feeder (six days; reduction of food source), and three feeders (four days) between October 23 and November 14, 2005. The agonistic behaviors were the number of agonistic behaviors recorded, as well as the species composition of aggressors versus recipients. Over the three treatment periods there was an increase in hummingbird visits (treatment one to treatment two: p = 0.0030; …

Selective Bromeliad Foraging In Cebus Capucinus Along A Tropical Premontane Wet Forest Edge, November 2005, Vanessa Machen Nov 2005

Selective Bromeliad Foraging In Cebus Capucinus Along A Tropical Premontane Wet Forest Edge, November 2005, Vanessa Machen

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Herbivores of the Neotropics are generally highly selective in their foraging behavior. Cebus capucinus (Primates: Cebidae), an omnivore, has been observed tearing apart and chewing on the leaves of bromeliads in the Upper San Luis valley, Costa Rica. This study examines the use of bromeliads by Cebus capucinus. Specifically, I consider the role of plant size, leaf water content and toughness in determining which bromeliads and which leaves C. capucinus selects. Comparing intact to torn bromeliads based on size, this study determined that C. capucinus selects small- and medium-sized plants. Leaves in the intermediate position of the rosette were also …

Seed Predation On Persea Americana By Dasyprocta Punctata In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2005, Gregory Paul Burkard Jr. Nov 2005

Seed Predation On Persea Americana By Dasyprocta Punctata In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2005, Gregory Paul Burkard Jr.

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Dasyprocta punctata (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae), a scatter-hoarding rodent, plays an important role in seedling recruitment and tropical forest composition. (Herrera and Pellmyr 2002) The purpose of this study was to see if D. punctata maximizes its fitness by behaving as a density-dependent forager, and if the scatter-hoarding caching behavior of D. punctata is aiding the fitness of Persea americana (Lauraceae). P. americana seeds were presented to D. punctata in three distinct densities at the Santuario Ecológico in Cerro Plano, Costa Rica to observe individual seed fate. No significant difference was found for the fates of P. americana seeds between the three …

Distributions Of Epiphytic Orchids And Bromeliads On Secondary Forest And Pasture Trees, November 2005, Greta Brom-Palkowski Nov 2005

Distributions Of Epiphytic Orchids And Bromeliads On Secondary Forest And Pasture Trees, November 2005, Greta Brom-Palkowski

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The locations and densities of epiphytic orchids and bromeliads growing on host trees are influenced greatly by differences in epiphyte requirements for light, moisture and nutrients. Because these factors differ greatly between minimally and highly disturbed habitats, epiphytic composition may also be altered. This study examined changes in epiphytic orchid and bromeliad density between hosts in secondary forest and pasture. Fifteen trees in each habitat type were censused for the abundance of orchids and bromeliads in different parts of the trees. Results indicated that the highest concentration of both orchids and bromeliads is in the pasture. In addition, in both …

Climatology Of Cloud-To-Ground Lightning In Georgia, Usa, 1992-2003, M.L. Bentley, J.A. Stallins Nov 2005

Climatology Of Cloud-To-Ground Lightning In Georgia, Usa, 1992-2003, M.L. Bentley, J.A. Stallins

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

A 12-year climatology of lightning cloud-to-ground flash activity for Georgia revealed the existence of three primary regions of high lightning activity: the area surrounding the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area, east-central Georgia along the fall line, and along the Atlantic coast. Over 8.2 million ground flashes were identified during the climatology. July was the most active lightning month and December was the least active. Annual, seasonal, and diurnal distributions of cloud-to-ground flashes were also examined. These patterns illustrated the interacting effects of land cover, topography, and convective instability in enhancing lightning activity throughout Georgia. A synoptic analysis of the ten highest …

On Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Limited Number Of Short Counterexamples, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber Nov 2005

On Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Limited Number Of Short Counterexamples, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider two variants of a model for learning languages in the limit from positive data and a limited number of short negative counterexamples (counterexamples are considered to be short if they are smaller that the largest element of input seen so far). Negative counterexamples to a conjecture are examples which belong to the conjectured language but do not belong to the input language. Within this framework, we explore how/when learners using n short (arbitrary) negative counterexamples can be simulated (or simulate) using least short counterexamples or just `no' answers from a teacher. We also study how a limited number …

Brave New School: A Constitutional Argument Against State-Mandated Mental Health Assessments In Public Schools, Jennifer H. Gelman Nov 2005

Brave New School: A Constitutional Argument Against State-Mandated Mental Health Assessments In Public Schools, Jennifer H. Gelman

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the constitutionality of emotional health assessments in public schools. Despite the Supreme Court's recognition nearly a century ago that parents have a right to control the education of their children, American courts have grown increasingly hostile to parental interests in conflicts between parent and school. The author explores the possibility that the Court's reaffirmation of parental rights in Troxel v. Granville (2003) could be invoked in certain cases to reverse that trend. It is argued, in particular, that parental objections to school involvement in emotional health determinations ought to merit some form of heightened scrutiny.

Edict V. Dicta: Rolling Back Rights In The Second Circuit Under The Clearly Established Clause Of The Aedpa Amended Habeas Statute, Aron E. Goldschneider Nov 2005

Edict V. Dicta: Rolling Back Rights In The Second Circuit Under The Clearly Established Clause Of The Aedpa Amended Habeas Statute, Aron E. Goldschneider

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article, through a close critical analysis of two recent habeas corpus decisions by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, shows how appellate courts, under § 2254 of the AEDPA amended habeas statute, are methodically erasing venerable and well-considered federal habeas precedents that formerly protected state defendants' rights. In the process of examining these Second Circuit decisions' impact on two discrete areas of criminal trial procedure, the article exposes the way in which habeas review under the AEDPA too often becomes a formalistic yet un-disciplined exercise that turns away from the crucial question that should be at the heart of …
