A Survey Of Students' Attitudes Toward Group Work, Pornpim Kijsiripanth Nov 2005

A Survey Of Students' Attitudes Toward Group Work, Pornpim Kijsiripanth

PASAA

Research has shown that collaborative learning has positive effects on students' attitudes toward both themselves and subjects studied. Working collaboratively can motivate students to learn and achieve common goals. The present study was classroom-based research which aimed to investigate students' attitudes toward group work and other activities in class. The subjects were 29 students who took the English Writing for Economics, a required course for second- year Faculty of Economics students at Chulalongkorn University. Collaborative work was used in several activities during the second half of the semester. The survey revealed that students had positive attitudes toward group work. They …

Meaning And Morphological And Syntactic Information In Learners' Dictionaries: Do Learners' Dictionaries Really Meet Learners' Expectations?, Somporn Handee

PASAA

Learners' dictionaries are supposed to be user-friendly and comprehensive reference books for non-native learners. It is. therefore, generally expected that learners' dictionaries should not only present precise and easily comprehensible definitions but also provide morphological and syntactic information about individual words not deducible from general rules of grammar. This paper explores how renowned learners' dictionaries deal with this and how successfully they meet such expectations.

Large–Scale Field–Programmable Analog Arrays For Analog Signal Processing, Tyson S. Hall, Christopher M. Twigg, Jordan D. Gray, Paul Hasler, David V. Anderson Nov 2005

Large–Scale Field–Programmable Analog Arrays For Analog Signal Processing, Tyson S. Hall, Christopher M. Twigg, Jordan D. Gray, Paul Hasler, David V. Anderson

Faculty Works

Field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs) providea method for rapidly prototyping analog systems. Currently available commercial and academic FPAAs are typically based on operational amplifiers (or other similar analog primitives) with only a few computational elements per chip. While their specific architectures vary, their small sizes and often restrictive interconnect designs leave current FPAAs limited in functionality and flexibility. For FPAAs to enter the realm of large-scale reconfigurable devices such as modern field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs),new technologies must be explored to provide area-efficient accurately programmable analog circuitry that can be easily integrated into a larger digital/mixed-signal system. Recent advances in the area …

In Memoriam: Robert R. Merhige, Jr., Ronald J. Bacigal Nov 2005

In Memoriam: Robert R. Merhige, Jr., Ronald J. Bacigal

Law Faculty Publications

It is difficult to write about Judge Merhige in an academic journal. His greatness lay not in formulating abstract legal doctrine, but in applying the law to real life situations. When I began researching his biography in 1986, the most pleasant part of the process was personal interviews with the Judge spanning two and a half years and filling some fifty audio tapes. Unfortunately, I was never able to capture his humanity in print and may have done him a disservice by writing his biography the way a law professor does-focusing on the intellectual aspects of his famous cases, rather …

Theology Of Brotherly Love, Robert L. Marshall Jr. Nov 2005

Theology Of Brotherly Love, Robert L. Marshall Jr.

Doctor of Ministry

Is it possible to have an adverse experience with Christianity and emerge being empowered by a new understanding of the gospel? Howard Thurman seems to answer that question in the affirmative. Thurman analyzes comments from Mahatma Gandhi and a barrister from "India" about Christianity under the light of the gospel. This encounter was important. It was the Genesis of Thurman's theology of brotherly love. This paper is an historical analysis of Howard Thurman's struggle to resolve the conflict between the perception that Christianity is a white man's religion and the gospel of Jesus and the disinherited. The writer will discuss …

Things Which Had Grown Are Being Made New: The Revitalization Of Missional Intent In The Diocese Of Oregon, George Thomson Hemingway Nov 2005

Things Which Had Grown Are Being Made New: The Revitalization Of Missional Intent In The Diocese Of Oregon, George Thomson Hemingway

Doctor of Ministry

The problem addressed in this paper is to find out if the application of missional principles in the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon can revitalize this diocese, direct the diocese to missional ends, and provide applications for similar situations in other dioceses. This investigation assumes that the existing infrastructure of the diocese has intrinsic value for mission if it can become focused on God's mission as its primary end. This approach assumes that the diocese has been and perhaps still is distracted by matters of secondary importance such as maintenance of existing facilities, issues of power, lack of trust, and cultural …

Life History Traits Of The Threatened Purple Amole (Chlorogalum Purpureum Var. Purpureum), John A. Guretzky, Elizabeth Clark, Darlene Woodbury

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Researchers monitored the threatened plant, purple amole (Chlorogalum purpureum var. purpureum) at Fort Hunter Liggett, California, from 1998 to 2004. The objectives of this research were to complete a statistical analysis of these data to evaluate: (1) demographics; (2) trends in population density; and (3) the relationship of purple amole to associated species, biological soil crusts, and disturbance. Overall, purple amole was most likely to flower and have greater seed production when it attained about 8 leaves or widths of 7 to 8 mm for its widest leaf, revealing a clear relationship between plant size and successful reproduction and seed …

The Esa21 Project: A Model For Civic Engagement, John Pratte, Matthew Laposata Nov 2005

The Esa21 Project: A Model For Civic Engagement, John Pratte, Matthew Laposata

Faculty Articles

There have been many systematic approaches to solving the problem of how to make science courses interesting to students. One that is currently receiving attention in the sciences is the use of civic engagement within the classroom. This approach works well in small enrollment courses, but it is logistically difficult to implement in large enrollment courses. Large enrollment classes lend themselves more naturally to other civic engagement approaches, such as special topics courses with individual or group research projects. The authors choose to meld the two approaches, thus creating a collection of activity modules for environmental science courses that use …

Spatially Disjunct Effects Of Co‐Occurring Competition And Facilitation, Ian A. Dickie Nov 2005

Spatially Disjunct Effects Of Co‐Occurring Competition And Facilitation, Ian A. Dickie

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Little is known of the co‐occurrence and implications of competitive and facilitative interactions within sites. Here we show spatially disjunct competition and facilitation at forest edges, with beneficial influences of trees on seedling growth via increased ectomycorrhizal infection apparent from 12 to 20 m while closer to trees seedling growth is negatively correlated with canopy closure. As a result, seedling growth is maximized at intermediate distances. Facilitative interactions were nonlinear: being within 15.7 m of a tree maximized seedling mycorrhizal infection; while competitive effects were correlated with canopy closure, which was related to distance and generally scales with density. These …

Learning From Classroom Observation: An Australian Experience, Nopporn Sarobol

PASAA

This paper describes the learning experiences I gained while observing classrooms in an Australian setting. In this paper I first give the background and the context of the study, followed by the aim of the visit, focusing particularly on professional development. In addition to learning from the experiences of other teachers, I also see this as a good opportunity to gain some experiences necessary for carrying out action research I hope to subsequently pursue. Next, I describe the procedure for a classroom visit, including the preparations made before and after observation, as well as the process of observation itself. Furthermore, …
