The Connection Between Leadership And Pedagogy., Gregory M. Kuhns Jan 2005

The Connection Between Leadership And Pedagogy., Gregory M. Kuhns

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this descriptive case study is to examine leadership and pedagogy in search of a connection between these two components. By examining the literature from a variety of authors, background information about leadership and pedagogy has been assembled to assist this researcher. A research-based Lickert scale, the Teachers' Perception of Leadership and Instructional Leadership (TPLIL), was designed by this researcher as an instrument to select the active participants for this study. The TPLIL was examined by a panel of educational experts for its clarity and representativeness. A list of twenty interview questions was used to gather information about …

Fourth Graders' Development Of Multimedia Portfolios., Veronica D. Kuminkoski-Yurt Jan 2005

Fourth Graders' Development Of Multimedia Portfolios., Veronica D. Kuminkoski-Yurt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A review of the literature indicates there is a need for alternative assessment practices for elementary students. Seven fourth grade students in a small rural school will learn how to construct an electronic portfolio that will exhibit their progress and achievement. The contents of the portfolio must include student participation in the selection as well as provide evidence of self-reflection. This study researches a computer-based portfolio, which uses HyperStudio software. This program will allow students to create sound, video, graphics, and animation during the construction process. As students build their multimedia portfolios, they will learn how to use technology as …

The Determinants Of State Work Attachment Strategy Choices And The Effects Of Work Attachment Strategies On Welfare Recipients, Former Recipients, And Poverty., Kyoung Hag Lee Jan 2005

The Determinants Of State Work Attachment Strategy Choices And The Effects Of Work Attachment Strategies On Welfare Recipients, Former Recipients, And Poverty., Kyoung Hag Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores how national factors such as the high performance bonus, work participation rate penalty, and caseload reduction credits from federal government influence state work attachment strategy choices. In addition, this study examines the effects of state work attachment strategies, such as lifetime limits, sanctions, and work requirements, on the employment and earning outcomes for welfare recipients in various states, along with the poverty rates in those states and the employment and economic status of former welfare recipients. Using three multivariate regression methods such as OLS regression, logistic regression, and ordered logistic regression using SPSS, this study analyzes administrative …

Roles Of Cellular Flice-Inhibitory Protein (C-Flip) And Pi3k /Akt In Fas (Cd95)-Induced Nf-κb Activation And Apoptosis Through Death Effector Domains., Bin Lu Jan 2005

Roles Of Cellular Flice-Inhibitory Protein (C-Flip) And Pi3k /Akt In Fas (Cd95)-Induced Nf-κb Activation And Apoptosis Through Death Effector Domains., Bin Lu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The cell survival protein kinase Akt/protein kinase B (PKB) is a known regulator of apoptosis but its role in Fas-mediated cell death and its regulatory mechanisms are unclear. Here, we show that stimulation of the Fas receptor by its ligand (FasL) induces rapid phosphorylation of Akt/PKB and a parallel increase in cell apoptosis in epidermal Cl41 cells. Inhibition of PI3K/Akt by overexpression of dominant-negative mutants of PI3K (Δp85) and Akt (Akt-T308A/S473A) protects the cells from apoptosis induced by FasL, indicating an unexpected pro-apoptotic role of PI3K/Akt in Fas signaling process. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies also show that FasL treatment …

Maurice Ravel's "La Valse": Historical Context, Structure, Harmony, And Challenges For Interpretation In The Solo Piano Version., Jeni M. Maneva Jan 2005

Maurice Ravel's "La Valse": Historical Context, Structure, Harmony, And Challenges For Interpretation In The Solo Piano Version., Jeni M. Maneva

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The solo piano version of La Valse is well worthy of study and performance, but it has often been unjustly neglected in reviews of Maurice Ravel's piano music. This paper analyzes the piece in its historical context, emphasizing the important role of the dance in Ravel's music. La Valse was originally written as a choreographic poem for a ballet performance. It was only later transcribed for two pianos and also for solo piano. While this paper focuses on the solo piano version, it also reviews the orchestral and the two-piano versions. The thematic, harmonic, and rhythmic aspects of this musical …

The Effects Of The Route Of Viral Infection On The Balance Of T Helper Immune Responses., Alicia R. Mathers Jan 2005

The Effects Of The Route Of Viral Infection On The Balance Of T Helper Immune Responses., Alicia R. Mathers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The majority of pathogens enter the host through mucosal surfaces. Therefore, it stands to reason that production of protective mucosal immunity is a desirable outcome following vaccination for those infections. However, only a few mucosal vaccines have been developed to date, in part because of a general lack of understanding of mucosal immunity. The research presented in this dissertation is focused on the comparison of mucosal and systemic immunizations as a means of contributing to the understanding of how mucosal immune responses are induced. There is evidence that mucosal immunization can skew the balance of T helper (Th) 1 and …

Impact Of The West Virginia University Student Support Services /Trio Program From 1998-2004., Barbara Copenhaver Bailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Institutions of higher education are facing more challenges today than ever regarding student retention and graduation rates. Graduation rates in higher education have been declining over the past several years. Because of this, many institutions are becoming increasingly interested in the needs of special populations in an effort to retain them at higher rates. One of these special populations is first-generation, low-income college students. The federal TRIO grant, Student Support Services (SSS) program is funded by the United States Department of Education to serve this population to increase their graduation rates. The purpose of this study was to examine the …
