Impact Of The West Virginia University Student Support Services /Trio Program From 1998-2004., Barbara Copenhaver Bailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Institutions of higher education are facing more challenges today than ever regarding student retention and graduation rates. Graduation rates in higher education have been declining over the past several years. Because of this, many institutions are becoming increasingly interested in the needs of special populations in an effort to retain them at higher rates. One of these special populations is first-generation, low-income college students. The federal TRIO grant, Student Support Services (SSS) program is funded by the United States Department of Education to serve this population to increase their graduation rates. The purpose of this study was to examine the …

Arylhydrazine Carcinogenesis And The Synthesis Of C8-Arylpurine Oligonucleotides: A Study Of Dna Adduct Effects On Dna Conformation And Stability., Jonathan R. Daft Jan 2005

Arylhydrazine Carcinogenesis And The Synthesis Of C8-Arylpurine Oligonucleotides: A Study Of Dna Adduct Effects On Dna Conformation And Stability., Jonathan R. Daft

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Agaricus bisporus mushrooms have been shown to be carcinogenic due to their arylhydrazine content, but the mechanism of the carcinogenesis has not been elucidated. Clues into the mechanism have been discovered in the metabolism of the arylhydrazines to arenediazonium ions and aryl radicals. Both of these compounds form DNA adducts, which may be relevant to carcinogenesis. Arenediazonium ions have been shown to activate signal transduction proteins associated with DNA damage and apoptosis. Previously, our group had shown that arenediazonium ions activate the apoptotic protein AP1. The activation of AP1 has been correlated to aryl radial generation, since the AP1 activation …

The Addiction Severity Index As A Predictor Of Outcome For Inpatients With A Dual-Diagnosis., Larry Spencer Glenn Jan 2005

The Addiction Severity Index As A Predictor Of Outcome For Inpatients With A Dual-Diagnosis., Larry Spencer Glenn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Addiction Severity Index is the most widely used intake instrument for substance abuse treatment. The National Comorbidity Study (Kessler et al. 1994) indicated that 13.7% of the United States population suffers from a concurrent substance use and mental health disorder within a lifetime. This study explored the utility of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and demographic factors as predictors of treatment as rated by staff at discharge. The records of 146 individuals with substance use and mental health diagnoses admitted to a freestanding residential treatment center in Northwestern Pennsylvania were examined to access the predictive properties of the ASI …

Predicting Adherence In Injury Rehabilitation: Utility Of A Screening Tool And Physical Therapists' Predictions., Emma Jayne Grindley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to explore protection motivation theory's (PMT) utility in guiding research in a general orthopedic rehabilitation facility. Further questions were whether a screening incorporating the Sports Injury Rehabilitation Beliefs Scale (SIRBS), Positive and Negative Affect Scales (PANAS), and a barriers checklist, and/or physical therapists' (PTs') perceptions were valid measures that could predict patients' adherence behavior. Adherence behavior was measured using the Sports Injury Rehabilitation Adherence Scale (SIRAS) and attendance behavior groupings which were classified as drop out/no drop out, no show/non no show, and cancellation/no cancellation. This study was conducted in a community sports medicine …

The Effect Of Argon Laser Irradiation On Reducing Enamel Decalcification During Orthodontic Treatment: An In Vitro And In Vivo Study., Thomas S. Shipley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The in vitro portion of this study utilized 35 extracted human third molars. The third molars were sectioned into buccal and lingual halves. The enamel surfaces were pumiced, etched using self etching primer, and divided into five groups with various levels of exposure to argon laser irradiation (40, 80, 120, or 240 J/cm2 ) or no laser exposure (control group). In the first experiment, teeth were exposed to a demineralization solution (pH=4.46) for 48 hours and in the second experiment, teeth were exposed to the demineralization solution for 72 hours. Lesion depth, lesion area, and lesion fluorescence were measured using …

Assessment Of Nitrogen Oxide Destruction In Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines By Injecting Nitric Oxide Into The Intake., Ramprabhu Vellaisamy Jan 2005

Assessment Of Nitrogen Oxide Destruction In Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines By Injecting Nitric Oxide Into The Intake., Ramprabhu Vellaisamy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Emissions from diesel engines, particularly oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and total particulate matter (TPM) emissions are harmful to the environment. Reduction of NOx emissions from diesel engines is of increasing concern. In 1998, a novel approach called Selective NOx Recirculation (SNR) was used to reduce NOx emissions in diesel engines. The SNR concept relies on two major parts, one to collect the NOx emissions from the exhaust using an adsorber, and another to decompose NOx using the in-cylinder combustion process by injecting the collected NOx emissions into the intake manifold at an elevated concentration. This research assesses the decomposition percentage …

Distributed Bragg Reflectors Based On Gallium Arsenic Nitride/Aluminum Arsenic Nitride For Long Wavelength Vcsels., Ramkumar Vinnakota Jan 2005

Distributed Bragg Reflectors Based On Gallium Arsenic Nitride/Aluminum Arsenic Nitride For Long Wavelength Vcsels., Ramkumar Vinnakota

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) operating at long wavelength (1.3-1.55 µm) are of great interest as inexpensive, high-performance light sources for optical communication systems. Surface emission and the small dimensions of the laser cavity are advantageous for on-chip testing, packaging, effective fibre coupling and potential low-cost fabrication. Long wavelength operation is favorable in fiber optic communications because of efficient transmission of data in silica fibres at that wavelength. However, when compared to GaAs-based VCSELs operating at wavelengths below 1000nm, which have seen a tremendous development in recent years, the progress for the long-wavelength devices has been much slower. The limited refractive …

And from the results it was concluded that television news networks are “white washed,” meaning that the news is based around Caucasians.

The Monyton Diaspora: A History Of The Middle Ohio River Valley, 1640-1700., Isaac J. Emrick Jan 2005

The Monyton Diaspora: A History Of The Middle Ohio River Valley, 1640-1700., Isaac J. Emrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the seventeenth century a vibrant group of Native Americans, the Monytons, controlled southern West Virginia and northeastern Kentucky. The effects of contact with Europeans destabilized their societies as far inland as the Ohio Valley. This began the process which eventually pushed most Monytons from the region. The Five Nations Iroquois, pressured by social changes farther north, attacked the Monytons further drawing people out of the Ohio Valley. A growing southern Indian slave trade also contributed to the decay of Monyton dominance in the region. A central point in this thesis is that Monytons formed and reformed traditions to deal …

A Regional Scale Steady-State Groundwater Flow Model Of A Steeply-Dipping Karst Aquifer, Shenandoah Valley Of West Virginia-Virginia., Jason S. Early

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A regional equivalent porous medium (EPM) model was developed using available hydrogeologic data for the steeply-dipping karst aquifer of the Northern Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia and Virginia. The model employed uniform recharge and variable hydraulic conductivity (K) distributed at the formation level based on published field-test estimates. Three independent procedures were used for calibration, with the most acceptable approach using calibration to heads at wells and specified fluxes for springs. Although this procedure produced a reasonable regional head distribution and acceptable calibration statistics (mean error = 0.58 m, mean absolute error = 8.61 m), the use of specified fluxes …
