North American Free Trade Agreement As A Two-Level Game And Implications For The Free Trade Area Of The Americas, Nicole E. Neubauer Jan 2005

North American Free Trade Agreement As A Two-Level Game And Implications For The Free Trade Area Of The Americas, Nicole E. Neubauer

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

The purpose of this paper is to break through the complexity of the NAFTA negotiations in order to reveal some of the contentious issues from three stages of the NAFTA bargaining process: the fast track agreement, the negotiations under President Bush, Sr., and the side payments under President Clinton. Putnam's two-level game theory will help describe how the interests of business, environmental groups, and labor unions influenced the outcome of the NAFTA through their respective win-sets, domestic and international power relations, and side agreements. Extrapolating from Putnam's model and the success in NAFTA bargaining, we can predict that the ongoing …

Out Of The Country Or Out Of Society, Karla Gabriela. Dominguez Jan 2005

Out Of The Country Or Out Of Society, Karla Gabriela. Dominguez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

This thesis was prepared under the direction of the candidate's thesis advisor, Dr. Timothy Steigenga, and has been approved by the members of her supervisory committee. It was submitted to the faculty of The Honors College and was accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Using the United States and Spain as case studies, this thesis argues that increasingly restrictive immigration policies instituted by receiving countries have little to no effect on the net inflow of immigration, nor do they promote a higher rate of assimilation for those …

Ritual For Revolution, Michael Degani Jan 2005

Ritual For Revolution, Michael Degani

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

In the last 15 to 20 years, the failure of Communism as a viable revolutionary project has turned many on the Left to its historical rival: Anarchism. Merging with environmental discourses like deep ecology and the struggle for indigenous rights, Anarcho-Primitivism models its utopian discourse on ethnographic descriptions of hunter gatherer societies and mythologized notions of the "Noble Savage." Furthermore, its adherents retain high rates of visibility in the burgeoning antiglobalization movement, notorious for their black uniform and tactics of property destruction. My paper critically and pragmatically engages their attempts to invoke "the Primitive" as a metaphor for resisting the …

Hot-Cold Medicine Revisited, Sarah. Bourget Jan 2005

Hot-Cold Medicine Revisited, Sarah. Bourget

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Anthropologists like George Foster have argued over the origin of Latin American hot-cold medicine since the 1950s. Some argue that it originated within the indigenous populations of Latin America while others argue that hot-cold medicine originated from European humoral medicine. In this paper, I take another look at this debate, focusing on how its practice varies from community to community and relating the debate to changes that have occurred in the discipline of anthropology in recent years. I also look at other lines of evidence, such as the linguistics used in association with hot-cold medicine and the nearly universal existence …

Spectral Decomposition Of Grid Data, Andrew. Donovan Jan 2005

Spectral Decomposition Of Grid Data, Andrew. Donovan

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Spectral decomposition is a method of expressing functions as a harmonic series, and can be used for the simplification of complicated physical problems. This type of analysis requires knowledge of the function at all points on a circle or sphere. In problems where the function is known only at discreet points, regular intervals in a rectangular grid, for example, numerical methods must be employed to compute approximate coefficients for the harmonic expansion. In this paper, we investigate numerical methods for computing Fourier coefficients of a two dimensional function at a fixed radius, and spherical harmonic coefficients in three dimensions on …

“Judith” Shakespeare In Computer Programming : An Oral History Study Of American Women Programmers In The Late Twentieth Century, Laura L. Zeigen Jan 2005

“Judith” Shakespeare In Computer Programming : An Oral History Study Of American Women Programmers In The Late Twentieth Century, Laura L. Zeigen

Dissertations and Theses

The question "Why are there not more women in computer science?" is one that has been asked by both scholarly and business communities since women entered the workforce in large numbers starting in the 1970s. Although there exists a vast literature covering how to involve more girls and women in computer science today, as well as a smaller body of literature outlining the few female pioneers in the field, little has been written about the women who, despite historical exclusion, actually participated in the computing industry as programmers and software engineers beginning in the 1960s. Who were the women going …

Joseph Bates: Originator Of Seventh-Day Adventist Mission Theory, George R. Knight Jan 2005

Joseph Bates: Originator Of Seventh-Day Adventist Mission Theory, George R. Knight

Faculty Publications

Joseph Bates was Seventh-day Adventism’s first theologian as well as the denominations first mission theorist. In the late 1840s he developed a chain- of-events approach to history and prophecy centering on the flow of events from Revelation 12:17-14:20. His prophetic chain-of-events logic eventually drove the denomination into worldwide mission as an eschatological imperative.

The Epistle To The Hebrews And Patron-Client Relationships: Toward A Missiological Appropriation, Cheryl D. Doss

Faculty Publications

Missionaries in cultures where patron-client relationships are common can find their participation in such relationships difficult. Recent New Testament scholarship has illuminated the patron-client relationships implicitly described in the epistle to the Hebrews. Utilizing this scholarship, this article explores the patron-client relationships illustrated in the epistle to the Hebrews seeking biblical principles to guide missionary life and practice.

Parallel Structures: Challenges And Opportunities, Bruce L. Bauer Jan 2005

Parallel Structures: Challenges And Opportunities, Bruce L. Bauer

Faculty Publications

This article presents a case study of the Vietnam house-church movement, looking at the challenges and opportunities that often exist when security concerns and governmental persecution force the creation of a parallel structure through which God can work. The article suggests ways to maintain administrative linkage and supervision between parallel structures and gives several reasons why parallel structures may be necessary in our present sinful world.

Mapping, Habitat Characterization, And Fish Surveys Of The Deep-Water Oculina Coral Reef Marine Protected Area: A Review Of Historical And Current Research., John K. Reed, Andrew N. Shepard, Christopher C. Koenig, Kathryn M. Scanlon, R. G. Gilmore

Faculty Scholarship

Deep-water Oculina coral reefs, which are similar in structure and development to deep-water Lophelia reefs, stretch 167 km (90 nm) at depths of 60-100 m along the eastern Florida shelf of the United States. These consist of numerous pinnacles and ridges, 3-35 m in height, that are capped with thickets of living and dead coral, Oculina varicosa. Extensive areas of dead Oculina rubble are due in part to human impacts (e.g., fish and shrimp trawling, scallop dredging, anchoring, bottom longlines, and depth charges) but also may be due in part to natural processes such as bioerosion, disease, or global warming.
