Intra-Atomic Aspects Of Magnon-Plasmon Interactions, Ralph Skomski, Peter A. Dowben Nov 2005

Intra-Atomic Aspects Of Magnon-Plasmon Interactions, Ralph Skomski, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Magnon-plasmon interactions are modeled by considering the spin-dependent dielectric response of atoms placed in crystalline environment. Hund's exchange rules favor parallel spin alignment, but the strength of the exchange depends on the displacement of the centers of gravity of the atomic spin-up and spin-down electron charge clouds. The intra-atomic exchange is modeled by considering a Hubbard-type interaction, and interatomic interaction then yields a k-space dispersion. The eigenmodes of the plasma are a mixture of spin-up and spin-down degrees of freedom, described by a 2×2 interaction matrix. Minority and majority bands yield different plasmon frequencies. However, these modes are not orthogonal …

Neutron And Nuclear Inelastic Scattering Study Of The Einstein Oscillators In Ba-, Sr-, And Eu-Filled Germanium Clathrates, Raphaël P. Hermann, Werner Schweika, Olaf Leupold, Rudolf Rüffer, George S. Nolas, Fernande Grandjean, Gary J. Long Nov 2005

Neutron And Nuclear Inelastic Scattering Study Of The Einstein Oscillators In Ba-, Sr-, And Eu-Filled Germanium Clathrates, Raphaël P. Hermann, Werner Schweika, Olaf Leupold, Rudolf Rüffer, George S. Nolas, Fernande Grandjean, Gary J. Long

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba8Ga16Ge30 and Sr8Ga16Ge30 indicate the presence of soft local modes with Einstein oscillator energies of 4.9±0.1 and 4.4±0.1meV, modes which are associated with the lowest “rattling” mode of the Ba(B) and Sr(B) guests, respectively. Nuclear inelastic scattering measurements on Eu8Ga16Ge30 yield Einstein oscillator energies of between 3.0±0.3 and 7.5±1.2meV for the different modes of the Eu guests. Further, the resonant character of the measurements on Eu8Ga16Ge30 reveals, without question, that neither of the Eu guests …

Particular Solutions For Axisymmetric Helmholtz-Type Operators, A.S. Muleshkov, M.A. Golberg, C.S. Chen Nov 2005

Particular Solutions For Axisymmetric Helmholtz-Type Operators, A.S. Muleshkov, M.A. Golberg, C.S. Chen

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we consider the solution of the axisymmetric heat equation with axisymmetric data in an axisymmetric domain in R-3. To solve this problem, we remove the time-dependence by various transform or time-stepping methods. This converts the problem to one of a sequence of modified inhomogeneous Helmholtz equations. Generalizing previous work, we consider solving these equations by boundary-type methods. In order to do this, one needs to subtract off a particular solution, so that one obtains a sequence of modified homogeneous Helmholtz equations. We do this by modifying the usual Dual Reciprocity Method (DRM) and approximating the right-hand sides …

Women And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Michelle Kahan Nov 2005

Women And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Michelle Kahan

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

Ninety percent of the 1,100 families who utilize the state's shelter system annually are headed by women, as are approximately 20% of the 19,000-29,000 individuals who stay in Massachusetts emergency shelters each year. In total, a minimum of 5,000 women and 2,000 children annually stay in Massachusetts homeless shelters.

These figures do not include over 3,000 women in domestic violence shelter (60% of whom enter shelter with their children), not the 50% of families seeking emergency shelter who are turned away each year. Over a period of three years, women also make up a quarter of Boston's 1,400 street dwellers: …

Women, Migration, And The Body-Less Spirit Of Capitalist Patriarchy, Mechthild Hart Nov 2005

Women, Migration, And The Body-Less Spirit Of Capitalist Patriarchy, Mechthild Hart

Journal of International Women's Studies

The continuously expanding global free trade in domestic and sex workers intensifies old capitalist-patriarchal forms of extracting women’s emotional, physical, and sexual labor. The patriarchal dream of seizing control of impure, unruly life has now entered its neoliberal stage, exemplified by money begetting money in the virtual sphere of financial speculation, and by biotechnology’s promise to create a world that is no longer in need of impure female mothering bodies. The very nature of the work associated with unruly life delivers, however, a major blow to the patriarchal vision of a totally controlled, purified, body-less world. Imported female ‘servants of …

Empowerment Beyond Numbers: Substantiating Women’S Political Participation, Bilkis Vissandjee, Alisha Apale, Saskia Wieringa, Shelly Abdool, Sophie Dupéré

Journal of International Women's Studies

From our households and into our communities, from independent States to international governing bodies, gender operates as a construct of evolving aspects of women’s identities and is a medium through which expectations are prescribed, social norms are formed and power relations are negotiated. Gender constructs that impede women’s access to the public spheres of society diminish the possibility for equitable and empowering life conditions. Of particular emphasis in this paper, facilitating women’s entry into political bodies across the world is also compromised by persistent obstacles in women’s opportunities in both political and private spheres of life.

Our research engages female …

Design And Performance Of A Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Corba Event Service, Huang-Ming Huang, Christopher Gill Nov 2005

Design And Performance Of A Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Corba Event Service, Huang-Ming Huang, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Developing distributed real-time and embedded (DRE)systems in which multiple quality-of-service (QoS) dimen-sions must be managed is an important and challenging R&D problem. This paper makes three contributions to re-search on multi-dimensional QoS for DRE systems. First, itdescribes the design and implementation of a fault-tolerantreal-time CORBA event service for The ACE ORB (TAO).Second, it describes our enhancements and extensions tofeatures in TAO, to integrate real-time and fault toleranceproperties. Third, it presents an empirical evaluation ofour approach. Our results show that with some refinements,real-time and fault-tolerance features can be integrated ef-fectively and efficiently in a CORBA event service.

Minimum Power Configuration For Wireless Communication In Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Chenyang Lu, Ying Zhang, Qingfeng Huang, Robert Pless Nov 2005

Minimum Power Configuration For Wireless Communication In Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Chenyang Lu, Ying Zhang, Qingfeng Huang, Robert Pless

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper proposes the Minimum Power Configuration (MPC) approach to power management in wireless sensor networks. In contrast to earlier research that treats different radio states (transmission/reception/idle) in isolation, MPC integrates them in a joint optimization problem that depends on both the set of active nodes and the transmission power. We propose four approximation algorithms with provable performance bounds and two practical routing protocols. Simulations based on realistic radio models show that the MPC approach can conserve more energy than existing minimum power routing and topology control protocols. Furthermore, it can flexibly adapt to network workload and radio platforms.

Agimone: Midddleware Support For Seamless Integration Of Sensor And Ip Networks, Gregory Hackmann, Chien-Liang Fok, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Chenyang Lu Nov 2005

Agimone: Midddleware Support For Seamless Integration Of Sensor And Ip Networks, Gregory Hackmann, Chien-Liang Fok, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Chenyang Lu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The scope of wireless sensor network (WSN) applications has traditionally been restricted by physical sensor coverage and limited computational power. Meanwhile, IP networks like the Internet offer tremendous connectivity and computing resources. This paper presents Agimone, a middleware layer that integrates sensor and IP networks as a uniform platform for flexible application deployment. This layer allows applications to be deployed on the WSN in the form of mobile agents which can autonomously discover and migrate to other WSNs, using a common IP backbone as a bridge. It facilitates data sharing between WSNs and the IP network through remote tuple space …

Context Aware Service Oriented Computing In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill Nov 2005

Context Aware Service Oriented Computing In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

These days we witness a major shift towards small, mobile devices, capable of wireless communication. Their communication capabilities enable them to form mobile ad hoc networks and share resources and capabilities. Service Oriented Computing (SOC) is a new emerging paradigm for distributed computing that has evolved from object-oriented and component-oriented computing to enable applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. Services are autonomous computational elements that can be described, published, discovered, and orchestrated for the purpose of developing applications. The application of the SOC model to mobile devices provides a loosely coupled model for distributed processing in a resource-poor and …

Invertebrate And Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw Nature Park, Karl Koehler, Vanessa Artman Nov 2005

Invertebrate And Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw Nature Park, Karl Koehler, Vanessa Artman

Student Research

Our study focuses on the interaction between invertebrate abundance and the decomposition of leaf litter. The decomposition of leaf litter plays a major role in the nutrient cycling process, which is critical to the health of an ecosystem (Spurr and Barnes 1980). The dynamics between invertebrates and leaf litter are of particular importance because invertebrates are good indicators of the activity of the decomposer community. Abiotic factors such as soil pH and temperature are also important influences on decomposition rates (Petersen and Luxton 1982, Seastedt 1984). Our goal was to determine the nature of this interaction. Ultimately, this information could …
