Further Remarks On Strict Input-To-State Stable Lyapunov Functions For Time-Varying Systems, Michael Malisoff, Frédéric Mazenc Nov 2005

Further Remarks On Strict Input-To-State Stable Lyapunov Functions For Time-Varying Systems, Michael Malisoff, Frédéric Mazenc

Faculty Publications

We study the stability properties of a class of time-varying non-linear systems. We assume that non-strict input-to-state stable (ISS) Lyapunov functions for our systems are given and posit a mild persistency of excitation condition on our given Lyapunov functions which guarantee the existence of strict ISS Lyapunov functions for our systems. Next, we provide simple direct constructions of explicit strict ISS Lyapunov functions for our systems by applying an integral smoothing method. We illustrate our constructions using a tracking problem for a rotating rigid body. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present optical spectra of the peculiar Type la supernova (SN Ia) 1999ac. The data extend from -15 to +42 days with respect to B-band maximum and reveal an event that is unusual in several respects. Prior to B-band maximum, the spectra resemble those of SN 1999aa, a slowly declining event, but possess stronger Si II and Ca II signatures (more characteristic of a spectroscopically normal SN). Spectra after the B-band maximum appear more normal. The expansion velocities inferred from the iron lines appear to be lower than average, whereas the expansion velocity inferred from calcium H and K are …

Successful Island Reintroductions Of New Zealand Robins And Saddlebacks With Small Numbers Of Founders, Sabrina S. Taylor, Ian G. Jamieson, Doug P. Armstrong Nov 2005

Successful Island Reintroductions Of New Zealand Robins And Saddlebacks With Small Numbers Of Founders, Sabrina S. Taylor, Ian G. Jamieson, Doug P. Armstrong

Faculty Publications

Populations established with a small number of founders are thought to have a high risk of extinction due to Allee effects, demographic stochasticity, inbreeding and reduced genetic variation. We tested whether the initial number of birds released was related to persistence in reintroductions of saddlebacks (Philesturnus carunculatus) and robins (Petroica australis) to New Zealand offshore islands. Data were analysed for 31 populations that had been observed for at least 3 years since reintroductions. The numbers released ranged from 5-188. Most of the populations (26) survived and grew, including five from less than 15 founders, and four out of the five …

Bioassay-Guided Fractionation Of Rubus Suavissimus Leaf Extracts Possessing Nf-Κb Inhibitory Activities And A Separable Cytotoxicity, Dong Liu, Zhanguo Gao, Jian Zhang, Jianping Ye, Zhijun Liu

Faculty Publications

Leaf extract of Rubus suavissimus S. Lee (Rosaceae), a perennial woody shrub indigenous to southern China, was tested for its biological activity in the regulation of transcription factor NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa B) A NF-κB luciferase reporter cell line was used in this study. The crude extract inhibited NF-κB at 100-1000 μg/ml concentrations with minor cytotoxicity. This finding prompted two more rounds of fractionation toward separating the active fraction from the cytotoxic fraction. Five fractions were obtained in the first round of fractionation, of which RUS-C20 was found to be the most potent in inhibiting NF-κB without signs of cytotoxicity …

Biology Faculty Works

Courtship conditioning is an associative learning paradigm in Drosophila melanogaster, wherein male courtship behavior is modified by experience with unreceptive, previously mated females. While the training experience with mated females involves multiple sensory and behavioral interactions, we hypothesized that female cuticular hydrocarbons function as a specific chemosensory conditioned stimulus in this learning paradigm. The effects of training with mated females were determined in courtship tests with either wild-type virgin females as courtship targets, or with target flies of different genotypes that express distinct Cuticular hydrocarbon (CH) profiles. Results of tests with female targets that lacked the normal CH profile, and …

On Static And Dynamic Partitioning Behavior Of Large-Scale Networks, Derek Leonard, Zhongmei Yao, Xiaoming Wang, Dmitri Loguinov

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this paper, we analyze the problem of network disconnection in the context of large-scale P2P networks and understand how both static and dynamic patterns of node failure affect the resilience of such graphs. We start by applying classical results from random graph theory to show that a large variety of deterministic and random P2P graphs almost surely (i.e., with probability 1-o(1)) remain connected under random failure if and only if they have no isolated nodes. This simple, yet powerful, result subsequently allows us to derive in closed-form the probability that a P2P network develops isolated nodes, and therefore partitions, …

Legal Injustices: The Zina Hudood Ordinance Of Pakistan And Its Implications For Women, Rahat Imran

Journal of International Women's Studies

During recent decades the women of Pakistan have been the most vulnerable and convenient targets of social, domestic and sexual violence. This paper will examine the trend of sexual violence against women that emerged in Pakistan with the introduction of the Islamization process through the implementation of the Sharia laws since1979. The paper’s main focus will be on rape and the state legislation that governs it, namely the Zina Hudood Ordinance of 1979 and the Law of Evidence of 1984, and how the gender-discriminatory nature of these laws serves as a powerful weapon in the hands of the patriarchal society …

Invertebrate & Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw University Nature Park And Arboretum, Karl Koehler, Libby Sue Allard, Kyra Dawn Reed Nov 2005

Invertebrate & Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw University Nature Park And Arboretum, Karl Koehler, Libby Sue Allard, Kyra Dawn Reed

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Our study focuses on the interaction between invertebrate abundance and the decomposition of leaf litter. The decomposition of leaf litter plays a major role in the nutrient cycling process, which is critical to the health of an ecosystem (Spurr and Barnes 1980). The dynamics between invertebrates and leaf litter are of particular importance because invertebrates are good indicators of the activity of the decomposer community. Abiotic factors such as soil pH and temperature are also important influences on decomposition rates (Bornebusch 1930; Petersen & Luxton 1982; Seastedt 1984). Our goal was to determine the nature of this interaction. Ultimately, this …

Student Employee Recruitment And Retention Through Campus Partnerships, Corinne M. Daprano, Megan L. Coyle, Peter J. Titlebaum

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Recruitment and retention of student employees are important considerations for any recreational sports department, large or small, because student employees impact both the quantity and quality of programs and services. This article proposes a strategy for establishing partnerships with academic departments to aid in the recruitment and retention of student employees. These partnerships benefit students, the recreational sports department, academic departments, and university student retention efforts. Following a description of this strategy is an example of a partnership that has been successfully established at one Midwestern university.

A Bayesian Subset Analysis Of Sensory Evaluation Data, Balgobin Nandram Nov 2005

A Bayesian Subset Analysis Of Sensory Evaluation Data, Balgobin Nandram

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In social sciences it is easy to carry out sensory experiments using say a J-point hedonic scale. One major problem with the J-point hedonic scale is that a conversion from the category scales to numeric scores might not be sensible because the panelists generally view increments on the hedonic scale as psychologically unequal. In the current problem several products are rated by a set of panelists on the J-point hedonic scale. One objective is to select the best subset of products and to assess the quality of the products by estimating the mean and standard deviation response …

Estimating The Slope Of Simple Linear Regression In The Presence Of Outliers, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem, Amjad D. Al-Nasser Nov 2005

Estimating The Slope Of Simple Linear Regression In The Presence Of Outliers, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem, Amjad D. Al-Nasser

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In this article, an estimation procedure to simple linear regression in the presence of outliers is proposed. The performance of the proposed estimator, the AM estimator, is compared with other traditional estimators: least squares, Theil type repeated median, and geometric mean. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed estimator. Simulation results indicate that the proposed estimator is accurate and has a high precision in the presence of outliers.

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Supervised classification into c mutually exclusive classes based on n binary features is considered. The only information available is an n×c table with probabilities. Knowing that the best d features are not the d best, simulations were run for 4 feature selection methods and an application to diagnosing BSE in cattle and Scrapie in sheep is presented.

Training Statisticians To Be Alert To The Dangers Of Misapplying Statistical Methods, Vance W. Berger Nov 2005

Training Statisticians To Be Alert To The Dangers Of Misapplying Statistical Methods, Vance W. Berger

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Statisticians are faced with a variety of challenges. Their ability to cope successfully with these challenges depends, in large part, on the quality of their training. It is not the purpose of this article to present a comprehensive training plan that will overhaul the standard curriculum a statistician might follow under current training regimens (i.e., in a degree program). Rather, the objective is to point out important areas that appear to be under-represented in standard curricula and correspondingly overlooked too often in practice. The hope is that these areas might be better integrated into the training of the next generation …

Power Of The T Test For Normal And Mixed Normal Distributions, Marilyn S. Thompson, Samuel B. Green, Yi-Hsin Chen, Shawn Stockford, Wen-Juo Lo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Previous research suggests that the power of the independent-samples t test decreases when population distributions are mixed normal rather than normal, and that robust methods have superior power under these conditions. However, under some conditions, the power for the independent-samples t test can be greater when the population distributions for the independent groups are mixed normal rather than normal. The implications of these results are discussed.

Misconceptions Leading To Choosing The T Test Over The Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney Test For Shift In Location Parameter, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky Nov 2005

Misconceptions Leading To Choosing The T Test Over The Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney Test For Shift In Location Parameter, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

There exist many misconceptions in choosing the t over the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum test when testing for shift. Examples are given in the following three groups: (1) false statement, (2) true premise, but false conclusion, and (3) true statement irrelevant in choosing between the t test and the Wilcoxon Rank Sum test.

Second-Order Accurate Inference On Simple, Partial, And Multiple Correlations, Robert J. Boik, Ben Haaland Nov 2005

Second-Order Accurate Inference On Simple, Partial, And Multiple Correlations, Robert J. Boik, Ben Haaland

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This article develops confidence interval procedures for functions of simple, partial, and squared multiple correlation coefficients. It is assumed that the observed multivariate data represent a random sample from a distribution that possesses infinite moments, but there is no requirement that the distribution be normal. The coverage error of conventional one-sided large sample intervals decreases at rate 1√n as n increases, where n is an index of sample size. The coverage error of the proposed intervals decreases at rate 1/n as n increases. The results of a simulation study that evaluates the performance of the proposed intervals is …

A Method For Analyzing Unreplicated Experiments Using Information On The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Jamis J. Perrett Nov 2005

A Method For Analyzing Unreplicated Experiments Using Information On The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Jamis J. Perrett

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Many studies are performed on units that cannot be replicated; however, there is often an abundance of subsampling. By placing a reasonable upper bound on the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), it is possible to carry out classical tests of significance that have conservative levels of significance.
