Dump Truck Driver Crushed Between Trackhoe And Dump Truck, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center Nov 2005

Dump Truck Driver Crushed Between Trackhoe And Dump Truck, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Motor Vehicle

On November 11, 2004, a 33-year-old male dump truck driver died when he was crushed between the driver’s side of the dump truck and the swinging counter-weight of an excavator (trackhoe). His dump truck became stuck in mud after the trackhoe loaded dirt into it so he walked to the on-site office and informed the owner. The owner located a bulldozer on site and drove it to the dump truck while the driver retrieved a chain from his personal pickup truck. The owner raised the blade so the driver could attach the chain to it. Raising the blade of the …

An Investigation Into The Use Of Brands In Young Adult Females' Drinking Rituals, Kieran Joseph Tucker Nov 2005

An Investigation Into The Use Of Brands In Young Adult Females' Drinking Rituals, Kieran Joseph Tucker

Masters

Recent studies and media commentary have highlighted a dramatic increase in alcohol consumption amongst young people in Ireland. Of particular concern is the extent of heavy, episodic drinking motivated by a desire for intoxication, or binge drinking. Various possible reasons for this have been identified, among them marketing activity and the glamorising of drink culture. The majority of studies into binge drinking define the phenomenon by volume measures of consumption alone and ignore the socio-cultural context in which alcohol is consumed. Drinking behaviours can be seen to be symptomatic of highly formalised and symbolically meaningful consumption patterns. As a ritual …

Assessment Of High-Frequency Performance Potential Of Carbon Nanotube Transistors, Jing Guo, Sayed Hasan, Ali Javey, Gijs Bosman, Mark S. Lundstrom

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Self-consistent quantum simulations are used to explore the high-frequency performance potential of carbon nantube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs). The cutoff frequency expected for a recently reported CNT Schottky-barrier FET is well below the performance limit, due to the large parasitic capacitance between electrodes. We show that using an array of parallel nanotubes as the transistor channel reduces parasitic capacitance per tube. Increasing tube density gives a large improvement of high-frequency performance when tubes are widely spaced and parasitic capacitance, dominates but only a small improvement when the tube spacing is small and intrinsic gate capacitance dominates. Alternatively, using quasi-one-dimensional nanowires as …

In Vitro And In Vivo Two-Photon Luminescence Imaging Of Single Gold Nanorods, Haifeng Weng, Terry B. Huff, Daniel A. Zweifel, Wei He, Philip S. Low, Alexander Wei, Ji-Xin Cheng

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Gold nanorods excited at 830 nm on a far-field laser-scanning microscope produced strong two-photon luminescence (TPL) intensities, with a cos(4) dependence on the incident polarization. The TPL excitation spectrum can be superimposed onto the longitudinal plasmon band, indicating a plasmon-enhanced two-photon absorption cross section. The TPL signal from a single nanorod is 58 times that of the two-photon fluorescence signal from a single rhodamine molecule. The application of gold nanorods as TPL imaging agents is demonstrated by in vivo imaging of single nanorods flowing in mouse ear blood vessels.

Imaging Artefacts In Atomic Force Microscopy With Carbon Nanotube Tips, Mark C. Strus, Arvind Raman, C. V. Nguyen

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Dynamic atomic force microscopy (dynamic AFM) with carbon nanotube tips has been suggested as an enabling tool for high precision nanometrology of critical dimension features of semiconductor surfaces. We investigate the performance of oscillating AFM microcantilevers with multi-walled carbon nanotube (multi-walled CNT) tips interacting with high aspect ratio structures while in the attractive regime of dynamic AM We present experimental results on SiO2 gratings and tungsten nanorods, which show two distinct imaging artefacts, namely the fort-nation of divots and large ringing artefacts that are inherent to CNT AFM probe operation. Through meticulous adjustment of operating parameters, the connection of these …

These attempts to analyze and interpret her work have produced a diverse approach to understanding this intriguing author, who lived only to the age of thirty-nine because of lupus erthymatosus. The approach of this dissertation is that the presence of this disease in her life caused her to look for ways to resolve and adapt to the limitations of the disease. One prominent source for reflecting and resolving the …

Geometrical Problems In Engineering Mechanics, Feraydune Kashefi, Mostafa Ghandehari Nov 2005

Geometrical Problems In Engineering Mechanics, Feraydune Kashefi, Mostafa Ghandehari

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Four problems in two dimensional geometry are presented, which are applicable to education of the basic courses, statics. These problems represent geometrical concepts that are understandable by engineering students. For example, consider a triangle made from a uniform rod. If we draw the inscribed circle of this triangle, and concentrate the weight of each side on the point at which in circle touches the side, center of the gravity of the three concentrated masses is located at the center.

Region Of Interest (Roi) Based Rate Control For H.263 Compatible Video Conferecing, Lin Tong Nov 2005

Region Of Interest (Roi) Based Rate Control For H.263 Compatible Video Conferecing, Lin Tong

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation presents a region of interest (ROI) based H.263 [10] [13] compatible video codec, which integrates the idea of object-based coding from MPEG-4 Visual [9] [15] into the traditional block-based H.263 codec. A face detection and tracking scheme with very low complexity is proposed to segment human face region from video conferencing sequences in real-time. For intra frames, the proposed detection method is a hybrid skin color and mosaic-rule based face detection and for inter frames the face tracking method uses motion vectors only. With the segmentation information, the ROI based codec and its associated rate control schemes are …

Repclass: Cluster And Grid Enabled Automatic Classification Of Transposable Elements Identified De Novo In Genome Sequences, Nirmal Ranganathan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In the last few years many computer and laboratory improvements in the production and analysis of DNA sequences have made possible the complete sequencing of whole genomes. This provides us with a wealth of raw genomes that needs to be processed and annotated. 5% to 80% of eukaryotic genomes contain repetitive DNA consisting of transposable elements and tandem repeats which needs to be identified, classified and annotated in order to sequence and annotate the entire genome accurately. Existing tools allow us to identify and annotate transposable elements (TE) but no tool exists for their classification. This thesis work introduces REPCLASS …

Application Of Graph-Based Data Mining To Biological Networks, Chang Hun You

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

A huge amount of biological data has been generated by long-term research. It is time to start to focus on a system-level understanding of bio-systems. Biological networks are networks of biochemical reactions, containing various objects and their relationships. Understanding of biological networks is a starting point of systems biology. Multi-relational data mining finds the relational patterns in both the entity attributes and relations in the data. A widely used representation for relational data is a graph consisting of vertices and edges between these vertices. Graph-based data mining, as one approach of multi-relational data mining, finds relational patterns in a graph …

Error-Resilient Image And Video Coding Over Lossy Networks, Yilong Liu

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The rapid growth of the Internet and increasing bandwidth in the past decade has heightened the interest in robust transmission of image and video signals over error-prone links. Recent literatures highlight the multiple description (MD) coding as a promising approach to solve this problem. MD coding is a source coding technique that provides a graceful quality degradation in the presence of packet losses during transmission. Topics of interest to construct MD coders with high coding efficiency and robustness are studied in this thesis. First, to minimize the overall distortion of reconstructed image, an edge-adaptive estimation algorithm is employed, which can …

The goal of this thesis is to create more adaptive and flexible user interfaces for people with disabilities and presenting information to everyone and on every device at any time. Delivering information at any time leads to situations such as a person walking with a mobile device having a small screen wanting to make a flight reservation. The intention of presenting information to everybody immediately raises the question of how much of the available information reach people with disabilities. We have suggested a content based user interface language that may be used by external services to interact with the user. …

Eigenspace Model Based Error Concealment And Low Bit Rate Coding Of Face Sequences, Xuejun Hu Nov 2005

Eigenspace Model Based Error Concealment And Low Bit Rate Coding Of Face Sequences, Xuejun Hu

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The emerging multimedia applications address the increasing demand for novel video coding systems to provide higher compression ratio while maintaining the high quality of the reconstruction. This research makes an effort under such context to investigate the application of principal component analysis (PCA) in the video coding area, especially for error concealment and very low bit rate face coding. PCA is a well known optimal linear scheme for dimension reduction in data analysis. The central idea of PCA is to reduce the dimensionality of a data set while retaining as much as possible the variation in the data set. Since …

Modeling And Feedback Control Of Mems Devices, Bruno Borovic Nov 2005

Modeling And Feedback Control Of Mems Devices, Bruno Borovic

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

As MEMS actuators reach maturity and emerge from the research lab into commercial applications, their increased reliability, speed, and performance accuracy is needed. MEMS are typically driven directly in an open-loop fashion by applying simple actuating signals. The requirements for better dynamical behavior, however, have resulted in the gradual introduction of improved actuation approaches, such as pre-shaped open-loop driving and closed-loop control. Unlike macro mechanical systems where the implementation of the feedback is relatively simple, it is quite problematic in the MEMS case. The presence of fast system dynamics, and physical area efficiency requirements have introduced additional challenges for feedback …
