Entropic Characterization Of Mixing In Microchannels, Marco Camesasca, Ica Manas Zloczower, Miron Kaufman Nov 2005

Entropic Characterization Of Mixing In Microchannels, Marco Camesasca, Ica Manas Zloczower, Miron Kaufman

Physics Faculty Publications

A methodology for rigorous mixing assessment in microchannels is presented. The analysis is based on numerical simulations of flow in different geometries coupled with mixing assessment using entropic measures. The results show enhanced mixing efficiency for the staggered herringbone micromixer by comparison with a mixer with straight diagonal ridges and a lack of mixing in a non-patterned channel. These results are in agreement with published experimental data.

Double Arrays, Triple Arrays, And Balanced Grids With V = R + C - 1, John P. Mcsorley Nov 2005

Double Arrays, Triple Arrays, And Balanced Grids With V = R + C - 1, John P. Mcsorley

Articles and Preprints

In Theorem 6.1 of McSorley et al. [3] it was shown that, when v = r+c−1, every triple array TA(v, k, λrr, λcc, k : r × c) is a balanced grid BG(v, k, k : r×c). Here we prove the converse of this Theorem. Our final result is: Let v = r +c−1. Then every triple array is a TA(v, k, c−k, r−k, k : r × c …

From Terrorism To Nonviolence And The Islamic Peace Paradigm: Jihad, Just War, Peace And Islamic Nonviolence, Sezai Ozcelik Nov 2005

From Terrorism To Nonviolence And The Islamic Peace Paradigm: Jihad, Just War, Peace And Islamic Nonviolence, Sezai Ozcelik

Peace and Conflict Studies

Islamic contributions in the areas of peace, war, and nonviolence require to be revisited in post-September 11 world. With reinterpretation and redefinition of Islamic concepts of jihad (sacred struggle), sabr (patience), adl (justice), umma (community), sulha (reconciliation), hijra (exodus), diversity, and tolerance, this study attempts to contribute the Islamic understanding of war, peace, and nonviolence. Also, the story of Cain and Abel in the Qur’an shows an example for the nonviolent action together with other contemporary Islamic nonviolence actions such as Intıfıada, Kosovo, and Abdul Ghaffir Khan in Afghanistan. This study will examine the just war, qital (fighting), jihad (sacred …

Spatial Distribution, Nectar Production, And Pollinator Visitation In Habenaria Monorrhiza (Orchidaceae), November 2005, M. L. Tsupros

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study examines the effect of patchy distribution on the production and concentration of nectar of Habenaria monorrhiza at Monteverde, Costa Rica. Sixty patches of H. monorrhiza were identified; patch size ranged from one to six individuals. One group of patches (N=24) was covered to prevent pollination and was examined for the amount and concentration of nectar. Another group of patches (N=36) was left uncovered and was tested to determine the effect of patch size on visitation rates of pollinators. There was no significant effect of patch size on the amount or concentration of nectar produced (F = 1.3039; p …

From Conflict Protraction To Peace Actualization In Palestinian-Israeli Relations, Saliba Sarsar Nov 2005

From Conflict Protraction To Peace Actualization In Palestinian-Israeli Relations, Saliba Sarsar

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article makes the case for harmonizing top-down peacemaking and bottom-up peace building in order to create and sustain a culture of peace. The analysis, focused on Palestinian-Israeli relations, finds the answer in the convergence of middle-line peacemakers and peace builders in “a center of peace actualization.” Such a safe space would allow for a shared concept of history, moderate action, and collaborative work on behalf of coexistence and social justice. Implied is the need for peacemakers and peace builders to become involved in each other’s domain and for all concerned to support middle-line peacemakers and peace builders as they …

The Importance Of Fathers In The Promotion Of Children's Literacy, Michael D. Barbera Nov 2005

The Importance Of Fathers In The Promotion Of Children's Literacy, Michael D. Barbera

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purpose of this research project is to provide absentee fathers of prekindergarten and first grade children with a familiar reading and writing tool, the postcard, to stay connected with one another regardless of the physical distance between them. This project's collection of postcards featuring authentic children's artwork and research based information for fathers, has been inspired by the research-based principles of Best Practice (Zemelman, S., Daniels, H., & Hyde, A., 1998). Each postcard includes valuable information for fathers, written in English and Spanish in order to address a demographically wide group (Green, 2002). Because gender bias, divorce, poverty, and …

Collaboration, Communication, And Online Groups: Analysis Of Two Projects, Anil Pathak, Lee Hwee Hoon, Fazilah Mohamed Ismail Nov 2005

Collaboration, Communication, And Online Groups: Analysis Of Two Projects, Anil Pathak, Lee Hwee Hoon, Fazilah Mohamed Ismail

PASAA

This work began with the presupposition that asynchronous web-based interactions (and collaboration) can add a special dimension to learning. Both projects were carried out with Engineering students. In both instances, institutionalized discussion boards were created for online group interaction. Data for both projects were collected from student surveys and. postings on the discussion boards. Analysis of student surveys showed different responses to the use of discussion boards. Students in the first project viewed themselves as accountable for their own learning, whereas students in the second project had a negative perception of the online discussion platform. Analysis of student postings from …

On English As An International Language, Saksit Saengboon Nov 2005

On English As An International Language, Saksit Saengboon

PASAA

In this position paper, I argue that English as an International Language (EIL) is meant to elucidate the current practice of English teaching, and more importantly to broaden the scope of inquiry focusing on such issues as English language policy, teaching approaches and materials (e.g., use of non-native literature). Being context-sensitive and culture-specific, EIL tries to answer a local question as to what constitutes "standard" English, etc. In addition to a tentative model of EIL, I also provide a list of eminently researchable topics revolving around the notion of EIL.

The Influence Of Hurricane Winds On Caribbean Dry Forest Structure And Nutrient Pools, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo, Rebecca Ostertag, Maria Riovera Costa, Ivelisse Ruiz Bernard, Sandra Molina Colon, Miguel Canals Mora Nov 2005

The Influence Of Hurricane Winds On Caribbean Dry Forest Structure And Nutrient Pools, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo, Rebecca Ostertag, Maria Riovera Costa, Ivelisse Ruiz Bernard, Sandra Molina Colon, Miguel Canals Mora

Publications

In 1998, we measured the effects of Hurricane Georges after it passed over long-term research sites in Puerto Rican dry forest. Our primary objectives were to quantify hurricane effects on forest structure, to compare effects in a large tract of forest versus a series of nearby forest fragments, to evaluate short-term response to hurricane disturbance in terms of mortality and sprouting, and to assess the ability of hurricanes to maintain forest structure. We sampled damage from 33 plots (1.3 ha) across a 3000-ha tract of forest as well as in 19 fragments. For stems with 2.5-cm minimum diameter, 1004 stems/ha …

Vitamin Intervention For Stroke Prevention Trial: An Efficacy Analysis, J. David Spence, Heejung Bang, Lloyd E. Chambless, Meir J. Stampfer Nov 2005

Vitamin Intervention For Stroke Prevention Trial: An Efficacy Analysis, J. David Spence, Heejung Bang, Lloyd E. Chambless, Meir J. Stampfer

Department of Medicine Publications

Background and Purpose - The Vitamin Intervention for Stroke Prevention trial (VISP) intention-to-treat analysis did not show efficacy of combined vitamin therapy for recurrent vascular events in patients with nondisabling stroke. Reasons for lack of efficacy may have included folate fortification of grain products, inclusion of the recommended daily intake for B12 in the low-dose arm, treatment with parenteral B12 in patients with low B12 levels in both study arms, a dose of B12 too low for patients with malabsorption, supplementation with nonstudy vitamins, and failure of patients with significant renal impairment to respond to vitamin therapy. We conducted an …

Variation In The Carotid Bifurcation Geometry Of Young Versus Older Adults: Implications For Geometric Risk Of Atherosclerosis, Jonathan B. Thomas, Luca Antiga, Susan L. Che, Jaques S. Milner, Dolores A.Hangan Steinman, J. David Spence, Brian K. Rutt, David A. Steinman Nov 2005

Variation In The Carotid Bifurcation Geometry Of Young Versus Older Adults: Implications For Geometric Risk Of Atherosclerosis, Jonathan B. Thomas, Luca Antiga, Susan L. Che, Jaques S. Milner, Dolores A.Hangan Steinman, J. David Spence, Brian K. Rutt, David A. Steinman

Department of Medicine Publications

Background and Purpose - Retrospective analysis of clinical data has demonstrated major variations in carotid bifurcation geometry, in support of the notion that an individual's vascular anatomy or local hemodynamics may influence the development of atherosclerosis. On the other hand, anecdotal evidence suggests that vessel geometry is more homogenous in youth, which would tend to undermine this geometric risk hypothesis. The purpose of our study was to test whether the latter is indeed the case. Methods - Cross-sectional images of the carotid bifurcations of 25 young adults (24±4 years) and a control group of 25 older subjects (63±10 years) were …

Absence Of Microemboli On Transcranial Doppler Identifies Low-Risk Patients With Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Who Do Not Warrant Endarterectomy Or Stenting, J. David Spence, Arturo Tamayo, Stephen P. Lownie, Wai P. Ng, Gary G. Ferguson Nov 2005

Ng, Gary G. Ferguson

Department of Medicine Publications

Background and Purpose - Carotid endarterectomy clearly benefits patients with symptomatic severe stenosis (SCS), but the risk of stroke is so low for asymptomatic patients (ACS) that the number needed to treat is very high. We studied transcranial Doppler (TCD) embolus detection as a method for identifying patients at higher risk who would have a lower number needed to treat. Methods - Patients with carotid stenosis of ≥60% by Doppler ultrasound who had never been symptomatic (81%) or had been asymptomatic for at least 18 months (19%) were studied with TCD embolus detection for up to 1 hour on 2 …

From Here To There: Memoirs Of A Swiss Childhood, Ellen Carney Nov 2005

From Here To There: Memoirs Of A Swiss Childhood, Ellen Carney

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Flags are the hallmark of August ist, a day steeped in tradition and legend. Flags are flown all year round, but they serve mainly decorative purposes on mountain tops, steam boats and on occasion, a church tower. The bright red square with the white cross livens up the green (or white) countryside, gray city streets and certainly looks photogenic against the blue sky of calendar pages. Swiss love their flag but don't pledge allegiance to it, not even on this day when it assumes a patriotic dimension and is flown everywhere, from ordinary buildings, across narrow streets in the old …

Swiss American Historical Society Review

To compile a pedigree chart of a few generations, and have it printed, might be considered a private and personal pleasure. However, if such a pedigree is set out to cover all ancestors as far back as the sources allow, the author has achieved something important not only for his family, but for his home town, the canton or even a larger part of the country. Swiss genealogists, especially Komad Schulthess, have started projects like this during the 1920's; in 1939 Eduard Riibel and Wilhelm H. Ruoff have set new standards with their Rubel-Blass genealogy, covering mainly Zurich and Bern …
