Flexible Social Structure Of A Desert Rodent, Rhombomys Opimus: Philopatry, Kinship, And Ecological Constraints, Jan Randall, Konstantin Rogovin, Patricia Parker, John Eimes Nov 2005

Flexible Social Structure Of A Desert Rodent, Rhombomys Opimus: Philopatry, Kinship, And Ecological Constraints, Jan Randall, Konstantin Rogovin, Patricia Parker, John Eimes

Biology Department Faculty Works

We tested hypotheses based on philopatry, kinship, and ecological constraints to explain sociality in a semifossorial desert rodent, the great gerbil, Rhombomys opimus. Data were collected in the field in Uzbekistan in the spring and fall of 1996 and 1998–2004. Population densities fluctuated dramatically with high turnover in both males and females to reveal that dispersal and social structure were density dependent. Fewer gerbils dispersed at higher densities and members of family groups dispersed together. A majority of females lived in groups at high densities, but as population densities declined, proportionally more females were solitary. DNA analysis revealed that group-living …

Bateman Gradients In Field And Laboratory Studies: A Cautionary Tale, Patricia Parker, Zuleyma Tang-Martinez Nov 2005

Bateman Gradients In Field And Laboratory Studies: A Cautionary Tale, Patricia Parker, Zuleyma Tang-Martinez

Biology Department Faculty Works

Since tools of molecular genetics became readily available, our understanding of bird mating systems has undergone a revolution. The majority of passerine species investigated are socially monogamous, but have been shown to be genetically polygamous. Data sets from natural populations of juncos suggest that multiple mating by females results in a sexual selection gradient as steep for females as for males (a result that does not support Bateman's predictions). However, in males, fitness is enhanced directly through fertilization success with multiple matings; in females fitness benefits may be enhanced immediately through direct access to food, protection against predators, or other …

In-Service Teachers And Computer Mediated Discussions: Range And Purposes Of Reflection, Gaoyin Qian, Liqing Tao Nov 2005

In-Service Teachers And Computer Mediated Discussions: Range And Purposes Of Reflection, Gaoyin Qian, Liqing Tao

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand discourse types (i.e., factual, prudential, and justificatory) of in-service teachers in the graduate program in literacy education when they engaged in Computer Mediated Discussion (CMD). This study also sought to uncover the kind of support that CID provided, and to identify their attitudes towards and feelings about such forms of discussion based on their online journal entries and responses to a questionnaire. Fourteen graduate students participated in a weekly reflection for 10 weeks on the readings and on the literacy development of the children they selected for case study. Results indicated …

A Limited Survey Of Biota In Devils And Stump Lakes, North Dakota, Dwight Williamson, Terry Dick, David Green, Hedy Kling, Daniel Rheault, Lisette Ross, Alex Salki

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Devils Lake is nominally part of the Hudson Bay basin (Figure 1), but is located in a closed sub-basin which until recently, was only rarely connected hydraulically to the rest of the basin. The last major transfer of water from Devils Lake occurred naturally to the Sheyenne River about 1000 years ago. Within Manitoba, the Hudson Bay basin includes Lake Winnipeg, the world’s 10th largest freshwater lake. Manitoba Water Stewardship was invited to participate by the U.S. President’s Council on Environmental Quality in a multi-jurisdictional, multidisciplinary effort to undertake a biological survey of Devils and Stump lakes, North Dakota. The …

Assessment Of Executive Function In Preschool-Aged Children, Peter K. Isquith, Jennifer S. Crawford, Kimberly A. Espy, Gerard G. Gioia Nov 2005

Assessment Of Executive Function In Preschool-Aged Children, Peter K. Isquith, Jennifer S. Crawford, Kimberly A. Espy, Gerard G. Gioia

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Assessment of the overarching self-regulatory mechanisms, or executive functions, in any age group is challenging, in part due to the complexity of this domain, in part due to their dynamic essence, and in part due to the inextricable links between these central processes and the associated domain-specific processes, such as language, motor function, and attention, over which they preside. While much progress has been made in clinical assessment approaches for measuring executive functions in adults and to some extent in adolescents and school-aged children, the toolkit for the preschool evaluator remains sparse. The past decade, however, has seen a substantial …

Headshots And Footprints Revsisted, Susan Thorpe Nov 2005

Headshots And Footprints Revsisted, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

The reader is referred to the headshot and footprint categories listed in Eric Iverson's Headshots And Footprints (August 2005). As an extension to Eric's article, I have compiled the following A-Z lists of headshot words and footprint words which are all heterograms (no repeated letters). Most of the words can be found in the Oxford English DIctionary, Second Edition. Places, identified by country, are taken from the United States Board on Geographic Names. Other references: Hodge = Handbook of American Indians ed. by F.W.Hodge, 1907; Sted. = Stedman's Medical Dictionary; Web2=Webster's Second Edition.

Old Saws Repaired, Christopher Mcmanus Nov 2005

Old Saws Repaired, Christopher Mcmanus

Word Ways

The roots of mangled proverbs as wordplay are historically distant. In Cervantes' classic Don Quixote, one humorous hallmark of Sancho Panchez was his abuse of proverbs; Sancho piled proverb on proverb, using garbled and inflated language, often citing them where inapplicable. The long-running radio show Easy Aces brought the form to modern mass entertainment as early as 1931. "You've got the cards before the horse," "the laugh's on the other foot," and "familiarity breeds attempt" were a few of comedienne Jane Ace's insights on the show.

Magic Square Logology, A. Ross Eckler Nov 2005

Magic Square Logology, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

A magic square, well-known to recreational mathematicians, consists of a set of numbers (integers) arranged in a square, such that the sum of each row and column and both of the principal diagonals is the same. Although magic squares date back thousands of years and have an extensive literature (see for example Magic Squares and Cubes by W.S. Andrews, published by Dover in 1960), the following logological problem involving magic squares appears to be new: construct a magic square in which the number-names in each row, column and diagonal share a letter (a different one in each case). Since there …
