Cortical Regions Associated With Autonomic Cardiovascular Regulation During Lower Body Negative Pressure In Humans., Derek S Kimmerly, Deborah D O'Leary, Ravi S Menon, Joseph S Gati, J Kevin Shoemaker
Kinesiology Publications
The purpose of the present study was to determine the cortical structures involved with integrated baroreceptor-mediated modulation of autonomic cardiovascular function in conscious humans independent of changes in arterial blood pressure. We assessed the brain regions associated with lower body negative pressure (LBNP)-induced baroreflex control using functional magnetic resonance imaging with blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) contrast in eight healthy male volunteer subjects. The levels of LBNP administered were 5, 15 and 35 mmHg. Heart rate (HR; representing the cardiovascular response) and LBNP (representing the baroreceptor activation level) were simultaneously monitored during the scanning period. In addition, estimated central venous pressure …

Provides that statewide general election days shall be state holidays. Further provides that public schools and community colleges shall close on statewide general election days, and that certain public employees, including public school and community college classified employees, may be entitled to a paid holiday on statewide general election days pursuant to collective bargaining agreements. Makes other non-substantive changes to renumber certain statutory provisions. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: Increased state costs of up to $18 million annually, depending on future collective bargaining negotiations. College Latino Students: Cultural Integration, Retention, And Successful Completion, Robert Hernandez
College Latino Students: Cultural Integration, Retention, And Successful Completion, Robert Hernandez
Staff Publications & Research
The purpose of this study was to examine and gain a deeper understanding of Latino College students' sub-cultures and how their cultural integration can affect their retention and completion of a baccalaureate degree. Also, this study sought to understand the cultural factors that influenced student retention. The participants were given a survey to complete for demographic information, and then were interviewed to capture each of their stories and experiences.
Twenty participants were involved in the study. All of the participants were self-identified as Latinos and came from several different, four-year, residential universities. There were nine men and eleven women. Of …
Identity Configurations Of The Sandpile Group, William Chen '06
Identity Configurations Of The Sandpile Group, William Chen '06
Distinguished Student Work
The abelian sandpile model on a connected graph yields a finite abelian group Q of recurrent configurations which is closely related to the combinatorial Laplacian. We consider the identity configuration of the sandpile group on graphs with large edge multiplicities, called “thick” graphs. We explicitly compute the identity configuration for all thick paths using a recursion formula. We then analyze the thick cycle and explicitly compute the identity configuration for the three-cycle, the four-cycle, and certain types of symmetric cycles. The latter is a special case of a more general symmetry theorem we prove that applies to an arbitrary graph.

Extended Emission Around Gps Radio Sources, Carlo Stanghellini, Christopher P. O'Dea, Daniele Dallacasa, P. Cassaro, Stefi A. Baum, R. Fanti, C. Fanti
Articles
Extended radio emission detected around a sample of GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources is discussed. Evidence for extended emission which is related to the GPS source is found in 6 objects out of 33. Three objects are associated with quasars with core-jet pc-scale morphology, and three are identified with galaxies with symmetric (CSO) radio morphology. We conclude that the core-jet GPS quasars are likely to be beamed objects with a continuous supply of energy from the core to the kpc scale. It is also possible that low surface brightness extended radio emission is present in other GPS quasars but the …

Generating Medical Logic Modules For Clinical Trial Eligibility, Craig G. Parker
Generating Medical Logic Modules For Clinical Trial Eligibility, Craig G. Parker
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical trials are important to the advancement of medical science. They provide the experimental and statistical basis needed to determine the benefit of diagnostic and therapeutic agents and procedures. The more patients enrolled in a clinical trial, the more confidence we can have in the trial's results. However, current practices for identifying eligible patients can be expensive and time-consuming. To assist in making identification of eligible patients more cost effective, we have developed a system for translating the eligibility criteria for clinical trials to an executable form. This system takes as input the eligibility criteria for a trial formatted as …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2005-11-15, Jean Vermette
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

We perform a wide parameter-space search for continuous gravitational waves over the whole sky and over a large range of values of the frequency and the first spin-down parameter. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semicoherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique. We apply this technique to data from the second science run of the LIGO detectors and our final results are all-sky upper limits on the strength of gravitational waves emitted by unknown isolated spinning neutron stars on a set of narrow frequency bands in the range 200-400 Hz. The best upper …

Cityland – Vol. 2, No. 10, Center For New York City Law
CityLand - 2005
The November 2005 issue of CityLand covers a wide range of land use and preservation developments across New York City. The City Council rejected the landmark designation of the Jamaica Savings Bank in Queens, while approving the Far West Village rezoning and the landmarking of the Plaza Hotel’s interior rooms. A proposed rezoning in Bedford-Stuyvesant was denied due to concerns over job loss. Staten Island saw the elimination of commercial overlays in 21 areas. The Planning Commission approved the transfer of Admiral’s Row to the Brooklyn Navy Yard and began concurrent review of Columbia University’s expansion and Community Board 9’s …

Combination Of Cdf And D0 Results On The W Boson Mass And Width, V. M. Abazov, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
The results based on 1992–95 data (Run 1) from the CDF and D0 experiments on the measurements of the W boson mass and width are presented, along with the combined results. We report a Tevatron collider average Mw = 80.456 ± 0.059 GeV. We also report the Tevatron collider average of the directly measured W boson width Γw = 2.115 ± 0.105 GeV. We describe a new joint analysis of the direct W mass and width measurements. Assuming the validity of the standard model, we combine the directly measured W boson width with the width extracted from the …
Nanoscale Faceted Polyhedra, Michael J. Zaworotko, Brian Moulton
Nanoscale Faceted Polyhedra, Michael J. Zaworotko, Brian Moulton
USF Patents
The subject invention pertains to nanoscale polyhedron-shaped molecules having molecular building blocks connected at their vertices. The subject invention also concerns methods of producing nanoscale polyhedrons utilizing a self-assembly reaction. The resultant molecules are faceted polyhedra that are porous, chemically robust, contain chemically accessible sites on their facets, and which are neutral and soluble in common laboratory solvents. The nanoscale polyhedrons can exhibit additional desirable physical properties, such as ferromagnetic properties.
