Case Study: Attitudes Of Rural High School Students And Teachers Regarding Inclusion, Christina Short, Barbara N. Martin Nov 2005

Case Study: Attitudes Of Rural High School Students And Teachers Regarding Inclusion, Christina Short, Barbara N. Martin

The Rural Educator

This case study was intended to explore the premise that the perceptions of the stakeholders regarding inclusion should enhance the implementation of the process in a k-12 rural setting. Therefore, rural high school students’ and rural general education and special education teachers’ perceptions of inclusion provided the primary focus of this case study. Data analysis identified that while overall general education teachers supported the idea of inclusion they did not believe that they were trained. Additionally, the students supported the concept of inclusion when they were allowed choice in which classroom they were placed and if the teacher allowed choice …

Parents’ Perceptions Of The Rural School Bus Ride, Rob Ramage, Aimee Howley Nov 2005

Parents’ Perceptions Of The Rural School Bus Ride, Rob Ramage, Aimee Howley

The Rural Educator

This article reports findings from a study of the perceptions of parents about the experience of long bus rides on their children. Twenty-six parents, whose homes were located on the longest bus route in a rural Midwestern school district, provided interviews regarding the experiences of a total of 37 students. In the analysis of the interview data, three themes emerged: (1) atmosphere on the bus, (2) length of the bus ride, and (3) safety. Notably parents expressed concerns about the fact that long bus rides exposed their young children to the unsuitable language and behavior of older students.Support for this …

If You Are Poor, It Is Better To Be Rural: A Study Of Mathematics Achievement In Tennessee, Theresa M. Hopkins Nov 2005

If You Are Poor, It Is Better To Be Rural: A Study Of Mathematics Achievement In Tennessee, Theresa M. Hopkins

The Rural Educator

Part of a larger research project involving the study of mathematics achievement of middle and high school students in Tennessee, this report analyzes said achievement in terms of school locale and the percentage of disadvantaged (pdisadv) students enrolled in the school. Schools were designated as Rural, Large Central City, and Other Nonrural. Socioeconomic Status (SES) was determined by the percentage of students receiving federally subsidized free and reduced lunch. Schools were then placed into one of three economic categories: Low to moderate pdisadv (less than 50 percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch), High pdisadv (50-74.99 percent), or Highest …

Middle Level Education In Rural Communities: Implications For School Leaders, Douglas D. Thomas Nov 2005

Middle Level Education In Rural Communities: Implications For School Leaders, Douglas D. Thomas

The Rural Educator

Middle level teachers and administrators working in small or rural schools often face unique obstacles in implementing recommended middle level practices. From sharing staff and schedules with other school sites, to inappropriate instructional techniques, to a general lack of understanding of the middle level philosophy, these obstacles can be a source of frustration for school leaders and hinder school improvement initiatives. A better understanding of these issues and the discussion of potential solutions will benefit teachers, administrators, and policy makers in improving middle level education in rural communities. By building on the positive characteristics found in rural and smaller schools, …

Improving Legal Writing: A Life-Long Learning Process And Continuing Professional Challenge, Kathleen Elliott Vinson

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This article shows why lawyers must improve their writing skills beyond law school, throughout their careers, and why the legal profession must join the legal academy in working to improve them. It offers recommendations that the legal profession can implement to combine efforts with academia to meet the challenge of improving legal writing. Academia and the legal profession agree that lawyers write poorly; however, how, when, and who should improve writing skills needs examination. For pragmatic and pedagogical reasons, a united effort between academia and the legal profession is required to meet the challenge of improving legal writing. Writing is …

Lifelong Learning In The County: A Context Of Nature, Community, And Simplicity, Donald N. Roberson Jr. Nov 2005

Lifelong Learning In The County: A Context Of Nature, Community, And Simplicity, Donald N. Roberson Jr.

The Rural Educator

The purpose of this study was to understand more about the impact of living in a rural area on personal learning with older adults. This is important to consider because of the higher concentration of older adults in rural areas. This qualitative research was based on twenty interviews with older adults. All of the participants lived in the same rural county in south Georgia (USA). One of the results from this research was the positive description of living in a rural area. Despite literature that often describes rural areas in a negative light; all of the participants spoke about the …

International Students: Culture Shock And Adaptation To The U.S. Culture, Stefanie Theresia Baier Nov 2005

International Students: Culture Shock And Adaptation To The U.S. Culture, Stefanie Theresia Baier

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Annually thousands of international students attend US colleges and universities which requires them to adjust to a new environment, often accompanied by a culture shock experience.

This study analyzes to what degree cultural background, gender differences, language proficiency, self-confidence/self-efficacy, and social support networks impact the adjustment process of international students to the US culture.

Forty-five international students attending a Michigan community college were surveyed and interviewed to assess the relationship among self-confidence/self-efficacy, cultural background, gender and social support networks. Western students reported more positive cultural adjustment (M=29.0) than non-western students (M=29.0). Males adjusted better (M …

Photovoltaic Effect In Bent Quantum Wires In The Ballistic Transport Regime, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Carlo Piermarocchi Nov 2005

Photovoltaic Effect In Bent Quantum Wires In The Ballistic Transport Regime, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Carlo Piermarocchi

Faculty Publications

A scheme for the generation of a photocurrent in bent quantum wires is proposed. We calculate the current using a generalized Landauer-Büttiker approach that takes into account the electromagnetic radiation. For circularly polarized light, it is demonstrated that the curvature in the bent wire induces an asymmetry in the scattering coefficients for left and right moving electrons. This asymmetry results in a current at zero bias voltage. The effect is due to the geometry of the wire which transforms the photon angular momentum into translational motion for the electrons. Possible experimental realizations of this scheme are discussed.

Reframing The National Football League: An Organizational Analysis Of The Construction Of A Modern Spectacle, Scott Charles Lewis Nov 2005

Reframing The National Football League: An Organizational Analysis Of The Construction Of A Modern Spectacle, Scott Charles Lewis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Popular and consumer cultures share a similar trajectory in the United States with spectacle and money being key ingredients in the construction of both. This is most apparent in the sports industry in America with billions of dollars in revenue generated every year. During the first half of the twentieth century sports like baseball and boxing commanded a significant amount of cultural and economic capital. It was not unheard of for sports teams, talented athletes and even a few select coaches to ascend to a legendary or even mythical status. The spectacle and revenue generating capacity of amateur and professional …

Content Differences Between Print And Online Newspapers, Jessica E. Smith Nov 2005

Content Differences Between Print And Online Newspapers, Jessica E. Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Internet provides the opportunity to develop a new way to present journalism, but many scholars say newspaper Web sites do nothing but mirror their print parents. This study used content analysis to compare the content of stories in five newspapers with their Web counterparts, and it examines whether reporter affiliation or a story's geographic emphasis has a relationship with the story's amount of contextual elements. These elements could include photos, graphics, or multimedia or interactive components online. This approach applied gatekeeping theory to publications that have editions in two media.

This study examined the five largest newspapers in the …

Adsorption Studies For Arsenic Removal Using Modified Chabazite, Ashutosh S. Vakharkar Nov 2005

Adsorption Studies For Arsenic Removal Using Modified Chabazite, Ashutosh S. Vakharkar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Arsenic contamination in drinking water has been a cause of serious concerns across the United States as well as throughout the world. Over 70 million people in Eastern India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Northern China have been victims of arsenic poisoning. The USEPA has classified arsenic as a Class A carcinogen and recently reduced the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) in drinking water from 50ppb to 10ppb. The deadline for all the water utilities to meet this level is 23rd January 2006. To meet those drinking water standards, small water utilities need low cost and effective arsenic removal techniques.

Natural zeolites …

Memory And Pluralism On A Property Law Frontier, Gregory Alan Hicks Nov 2005

Memory And Pluralism On A Property Law Frontier, Gregory Alan Hicks

ExpressO

This article explores the limits of legal victory and the problem of legitimacy of legal outcomes. It chronicles the decades-long dispute between Hispano settlers on northern New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo land grant and the succession of entrepreneur owners of the grant in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. The dispute occurred on a legal and cultural frontier defined by the transition from Mexican to U.S. dominion in the years following the end of the Mexican War and by the opening of the region to larger scale economic development at the …

Wind Versus Water: Why 'Proximate Cause' Should Help, Not Hurt, Policyholders Who Seek Coverage For Hurricane Claims, Rhonda D. Orin

ExpressO

“Wind Versus Water: Why ‘Proximate Cause’ Should Help, Not Hurt, Policyholders Who Seek Coverage for Hurricane Claims” examines the clash between the “efficient proximate cause” doctrine of insurance law, which holds that coverage exists if the dominant cause of a loss is a covered peril, with the now-ubiquitous “anti-concurrent causation clauses” added to homeowners’ and business insurance policies, which exclude coverage for damages caused by a named event (such as flood) “regardless of any other cause or event that contributes concurrently or in any sequence to the loss.” The article reviews various state laws and court rulings that have placed …

Playing The Audit Lottery: The Role Of Penalties In The Us Tax Law In The Aftermath Of Long Term Capital Holding V. United States , Yoram Keinan

ExpressO

Tax motivated transactions have become a serious consideration for Congress in recent years. The concerns include the extent of loss of tax revenues, harm to the integrity of the tax system, and equity. Although these concerns are understandable, Judge Learned Hand stated many years ago that: “[A]nyone may so arrange his affairs that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which will best pay the Treasury; there is not even a patriotic duty to increase one’s tax.” It is necessary, as this article will argue, to balance between the taxpayer’s right …
