Political Instability And Economic Performance: A Panel Data Analysis, Hazem M. Zureiqat
Political Instability And Economic Performance: A Panel Data Analysis, Hazem M. Zureiqat
Award Winning Economics Papers
This paper studies the relationship between political instability, measured by a country's Polity2 decmocratization score, and economic performance, measured by the GDP per capita. We use data from 1985 to 2002 for 25 countries in five different regions: Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The results of the empirical models in this paper show a significant relationship between democracy and economic growth, but no significant sign of endogeneity (joint causality) as suggested by previous research. This paper also finds the 'optimal' Polity2 score that maximizes GDP per capita in each of the five …

Casual Mediation Analyses With Structural Mean Models, Thomas R. Tenhave, Marshall Joffe, Kevin Lynch, Greg Brown, Stephen Maisto
UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers
We represent a linear structural mean model (SMM)approach for analyzing mediation of a randomized baseline intervention's effect on a univariate follow-up outcome. Unlike standard mediation analyses, our approach does not assume that the mediating factor is randomly assigned to individuals (i.e., sequential ignorability). Hence, a comparison of the results of the proposed and standard approaches in with respect to mediation offers a sensitivity analyses of the sequential ignorability assumption. The G-estimation procedure for the proposed SMM represents an extension of the work on direct effects of randomized treatment effects for survival outcomes by Robins and Greenland (1994) (Section 5.0 and …

An Introduction To Low-Level Analysis Methods Of Dna Microarray Data, Wolfgang Huber, Anja Von Heydebreck, Martin Vingron
Bioconductor Project Working Papers
This article gives an overview over the methods used in the low--level analysis of gene expression data generated using DNA microarrays. This type of experiment allows to determine relative levels of nucleic acid abundance in a set of tissues or cell populations for thousands of transcripts or loci simultaneously. Careful statistical design and analysis are essential to improve the efficiency and reliability of microarray experiments throughout the data acquisition and analysis process. This includes the design of probes, the experimental design, the image analysis of microarray scanned images, the normalization of fluorescence intensities, the assessment of the quality of microarray …
