The Market Potential Of A New High-Oleic Soybean Developed At Unl, Amalia Yiannaka
Cornhusker Economics
The introduction of genetically modified (GM) products into the food system has been a contentious issue eliciting divergent responses from the major players in the agri-food sector. While farmers have been embracing the agronomic benefits associated with the first generation of producer-oriented GM products, an increasing number of consumers have been raising objections to food containing GM ingredients in major markets around the world. Consumer reaction to GM products is founded on health, environmental, ethical and/or philosophical concerns, and has impaired the potential of agricultural biotechnology.

White Beauty: The Portrayal Of Minorities In Teen Beauty Magazines, Micaela Choo Banks
White Beauty: The Portrayal Of Minorities In Teen Beauty Magazines, Micaela Choo Banks
Theses and Dissertations
This content analysis examines the representations of minorities in the two most popular teen beauty magazines: Seventeen and YM. Nine issues for 2003 constituted the sample frame yielding a total of 620 advertisements containing human models. After setting up a theoretical framework of the new racism and White beauty, this study investigates the portrayals of minority models. Overall, when compared with earlier studies the number of minority models used in mainstream magazine advertising rose and the portrayals of minority models in prominent roles increased. Yet, the subtle nature of the new racism was reinforced in the following findings: Prominent …

The United States filed a petition for the extradition of the Appellant, Ze’ev Rosenstein, for the purposes of prosecuting him for conspiracy to smuggle a dangerous drug to the United States and its distribution there. Following the Petition, the Attorney General submitted a motion to the District Court for a declaratory relief that he is extraditable. The District Court granted the motion and declared …
Question Of Bias: A Content Analysis Of The Visual Coverage Of The 2004 Presidential Campaign, Angie Bergstrom
Question Of Bias: A Content Analysis Of The Visual Coverage Of The 2004 Presidential Campaign, Angie Bergstrom
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the question of preferential treatment by U.S. national newsmagazines of presidential candidates in the 2004 election as evidenced by their visual coverage. Using content analysis, all the visual depictions of candidates George W. Bush and John Kerry were analyzed for 10 visual attributes to determine whether one had received better pictorial treatment. This study asked if the newsmagazines had printed greater amounts of visuals overall for one candidate and if one candidate's visuals were more or less positive than the other. The author concludes that more coverage was given to Bush over Kerry in a 60/40 …

Jurisdictional Competition In The European Community, Seth B. Chertok
Jurisdictional Competition In The European Community, Seth B. Chertok
ExpressO
The main purpose of this article is to analyze how four company law cases (Daily Mail, Centros, Uberseering, and Inspire Art) in the European Community have expanded the Freedom of Establishment to potentially open the door to corporate jurisdictional competition in the European Community, similar to the sort that exists in the United States through the Delaware effect. However, in Europe, this type of jurisdictional competition has traditionally been thought of as undesirable, particularly in certain Member States such as Germany that have co-determination and minimum capital requirements. These Member States have continued to adhere to the real seat and …

Data Adaptive Pathway Testing, Merrill D. Birkner, Alan E. Hubbard, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Data Adaptive Pathway Testing, Merrill D. Birkner, Alan E. Hubbard, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
A majority of diseases are caused by a combination of factors, for example, composite genetic mutation profiles have been found in many cases to predict a deleterious outcome. There are several statistical techniques that have been used to analyze these types of biological data. This article implements a general strategy which uses data adaptive regression methods to build a specific pathway model, thus predicting a disease outcome by a combination of biological factors and assesses the significance of this model, or pathway, by using a permutation based null distribution. We also provide several simulation comparisons with other techniques. In addition, …

Uvc Rediation Therapy For Leukemia, Lyndon L. Larcom, Amy Tuck, Samuel Smith
Clemson Patents
Leukocytes from leukemia patients have been found to be readily killed by ultra-violet light-C (UVC) radiation. Cells from healthy donors were minimally affected by doses of UVC 10 times higher than those which caused dramatic drops in the metabolism of diseased cells and eventual death. Irradiated cells from leukemia patients and from healthy individuals demonstrated a number of single strand DNA breaks and alkali-labile sites compared to unirradiated control cells. The extent of DNA damage to both healthy and diseased cells is dose dependent. However, the diseased cells demonstrated more extensive DNA fragmentation and an inability to undergo self-repair. The …

In this paper, we provide combinatorial interpretations for some determinantal identities involving Fibonacci numbers. We use the method due to Lindström-Gessel-Viennot in which we count nonintersecting n-routes in carefully chosen digraphs in order to gain insight into the nature of some well-known determinantal identities while allowing room to generalize and discover new ones.
