Soil Cleanup At Los Alamos National Laboratory: Sediment Contamination In The South Fork Of Acid Canyon, Institute For Energy And Environmental Research (Ieer), Brice Smith

Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER)

Between 1944 and 1964, multiple liquid radioactive waste streams were released into the South Fork of Acid Canyon from Los Alamos National Laboratory. From 1944 to 1951, “untreated radioactive effluent from former Technical Area (TA) 1 was discharged into the head of the South Fork of Acid Canyon” and from 1951 to 1964 a “radioactive liquid waste treatment plant at former TA-45” discharged its effluent into the canyon. Today, this area is located within 1,000 feet of a residential neighborhood and less than a mile from a local high-school.1 We chose to examine the remediation of Acid Canyon because; (1) …

Insect outbreaks are expected to increase in frequency and intensity with projected changes in global climate through direct effects of climate change on insect populations and through disruption of community interactions. Although there is much concern about mean changes in global climate, the impact of climatic variability itself on species interactions has been little explored. Here, we compare caterpillar–parasitoid interactions across a broad gradient of climatic variability and find that the combined data in 15 geographically dispersed databases show a decrease in levels of parasitism as climatic variability increases. The dominant contribution to this pattern by relatively specialized parasitoid wasps …

The Effects Of Cooperative Learning On The Math Performance In Students With Emotional Behavior Disorders?, Michael Ramboldt Nov 2005

The Effects Of Cooperative Learning On The Math Performance In Students With Emotional Behavior Disorders?, Michael Ramboldt

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of cooperative learning (CL) on the math performance of middle and high school students with Emotional Behavior Disabilities (EB/D). Two classes, for a total of 16 students, participated in the study. One class of eight students was used as the control group. The other class of nine students was placed in three groups of three cooperative learning teams. The study was conducted between September 1", 2004 and March 20, 2005. This was the equivalent of three quarters of the school year with cooperative learning being used as the instructional strategy …

Psychometrically Equivalent Digital Recordings For Speech Audiometry Testing In Mandarin Chinese: Standard Mandarin Dialect, Lara-Jill Jennings Nov 2005

Psychometrically Equivalent Digital Recordings For Speech Audiometry Testing In Mandarin Chinese: Standard Mandarin Dialect, Lara-Jill Jennings

Theses and Dissertations

The development of digitally recorded speech audiometry materials in Mandarin Chinese has been limited to date. High quality materials proliferate in the English language and have been developed for other languages such as Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, Polish, and Russian. The aims of this study were to develop, digitally record, evaluate, and equate words and word lists in Mandarin Chinese to use for speech reception threshold testing and for speech discrimination testing. The words that were evaluated were chosen from a Chinese frequency usage dictionary. One native male and one native female talker recorded the words onto …

Conduction-Band Tight-Binding Description For Si Applied To P Donors, A. S. Martins, Timothy B. Boykin, Gerhard Klimeck, Belita Koiller Nov 2005

Conduction-Band Tight-Binding Description For Si Applied To P Donors, A. S. Martins, Timothy B. Boykin, Gerhard Klimeck, Belita Koiller

Other Nanotechnology Publications

A tight-binding parametrization for silicon, optimized to correctly reproduce effective masses as well as the reciprocal space positions of the conduction-band minima, is presented. The reliability of the proposed parametrization is assessed by performing systematic comparisons between the descriptions of donor impurities in Si using this parametrization and previously reported ones. The spectral decomposition of the donor wave function demonstrates the importance of incorporating full band effects for a reliable representation, and that an incomplete real space description results from a truncated reciprocal space expansion as proposed within the effective mass theory.

Murray, Elizabeth, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Her family moved from Harlem in 1941. Her father was a Transit Worker in the Subway Division and her mother was a seamstress from their home. They moved into a 3 family house on Home Street. Growing up there was a rich street life. She saw the racial makeup of her street change from mostly German and Jewish to mostly African American. She attended PS 63 and really enjoyed herself there. The school was pretty diverse. Her family attended Caldwell AME Zion Church. This was a powerful force in her life and in the community. Even though she lived in …

Percolation Quantum Phase Transitions In Diluted Magnets, Thomas Vojta, Jörg Schmalian Nov 2005

Percolation Quantum Phase Transitions In Diluted Magnets, Thomas Vojta, Jörg Schmalian

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show that the interplay of geometric criticality and quantum fluctuations leads to a novel universality class for the percolation quantum phase transition in diluted magnets. All critical exponents involving dynamical correlations are different from the classical percolation values, but in two dimensions they can nonetheless be determined exactly. We develop a complete scaling theory of this transition, and we relate it to recent experiments in La2Cu1-p(Zn,Mg)pO4. Our results are also relevant for disordered interacting boson systems.

Developmental Sequences For Simulating Crop Phenology For Water-Limiting Conditions, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wally Wilhelm, A. B. Frank Nov 2005

Developmental Sequences For Simulating Crop Phenology For Water-Limiting Conditions, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wally Wilhelm, A. B. Frank

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The timing, duration, and pace of developmental events, or phenology, are among the many responses of plants to limited soil water. Understanding and predicting plant responses to availability of soil water are important in improving the efficacy of management practices. However, the first steps towards gaining this understanding, summarizing the complete developmental sequence of the shoot apex and correlating the timing of these events, have rarely been reported. Also, the effect of water-limiting conditions on crop phenology and shoot apex development is variable. The objective of this paper is to present the developmental sequence of the wheat (Triticum aestivum …
