Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality, and often results from functional placental insufficiency. Placentation requires extensive vasculogenesis and subsequent angiogenesis, in both maternal and fetal tissues. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) and Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) are angiogenic growth factors expressed in the placenta, and compete for binding to a common receptor, Tunica interna endothelial cell kinase-2 (Tie-2). Our objective was to examine Ang-1, Ang-2 and Tie-2 expression in ovine placental tissue obtained from normal and FGR pregnancies throughout gestation. The anterior medial prefrontal (AMPFC) and retrosplenial (RSC) cortices are active during self-referential decision-making tasks such as when participants appraise traits and abilities, or current affect. Other appraisal tasks requiring an evaluative decision or mental representation, such as theory of mind and perspective-taking tasks, also involve these regions. In many instances, these types of decisions involve a subjective opinion or preference, but also a degree of ambiguity in the decision, rather than a strictly veridical response. Background and Purpose - Cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK; EC 4.1.1.32), encoded by PCK1, catalyzes the first committed step in gluconeogenesis. We previously showed that a -232C>G promoter polymorphism within a cis-acting element required for basal and cAMP-mediated PCK1 gene transcription results in loss of negative regulation by insulin, contributing to worsened metabolic control in the context of insulin resistance. We hypothesized that this polymorphism would be associated with carotid atherosclerosis in a sample of 150 aboriginal Canadians. Although Davies stands outside the Latter-day Saint tradition, he stands outside with respect. The tools he uses are those of the anthropologist, sociologist, and theologian. Being from outside the Latter-day Saint tradition gives him a perspective that those within the tradition find hard to replicate, and that is precisely Davies’s strength. He sees things “Mormon” in a slightly different way than those within the tradition and raises interesting questions that should be answered.

The purpose of this study was to determine administrator's perceptions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, with particular emphasis on the areas of standards, assessment, accountability, and parental choice. One hundred superintendents and 660 principals were randomly selected to participate in the study. The survey consisted of five questions regarding standards, five questions regarding assessment, five questions regarding accountability, and five questions regarding parental choice as each relates to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effect of middle level grade configurations on eighth grade academic achievement as determined by the results reported on the ISTEP+ (Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus). Furthermore, the study analyzed the effects of grade configuration, school locale, and transition type on eighth grade academic achievement. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was employed to collect and analyze the data for this study. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) received funds in 2004 from the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) to administer grants to coastal municipalities to eliminate illicit discharges into their storm drainage systems. This final report describes the two projects that were funded under this grant. Projects in Dover, and Portsmouth involved eliminating sewage discharges into storm drainage systems from houses, apartment buildings, and commercial buildings. All of these efforts helped improve water quality in the coastal area by reducing pollution. NHEP chose to fund illicit discharge detection and elimination projects for a number of reasons. An Empirical Study Of The Transition From Paid Work To Self-Employment, S. Ramakrishna Velamuri, S. Venkataraman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

We explore the transition from paid work to self-employment using three explanatory variables: paid income, predicted income, and income for ability. We find no linear relationship between the three variables and the self-employment transition. We then test for curvilinear relationships. We find that individuals with low incomes are more likely to take up self-employment. Further, income for ability is the strongest predictor of the transition to self-employment. The relationship between ability and self-employment is U-shaped: very low ability and very high ability individuals are more likely to take up self-employment.

Prior research suggests that firms owned by women and minorities are smaller, less profitable, and less growth-oriented than those owned by white men. Prior research also suggests that firm performance is influenced by the firm owner's level of human capital in the form of education, employment experience, and life experiences that might help him to prepare for the challenges of small business ownership. This artical compares the performance of firms owned by white men to those owned by white women and by minority small business owners to determine if higher levels of human capital eliminate performance gaps between them. Mexico Versus Canada: Stability Benefits From Making Common Currency With Usd?, George M. Von Furstenberg

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Using a de facto classification of exchange-rate regimes, this paper investigates how the volatility of PPP-GDP per person and per hour of work is associated with such regimes in Mexico and in Canada. It finds that, for Mexico unlike Canada, the macroeconomic volatility left is much greater during periods when the nominal exchange rate with USD changes appreciably than when it is quasi-pegged. However, Mexico cannot safely peg to USD except through formal US-dollarization. Hence this finding suggests that the stability benefits of monetary union are greatest for emerging-market countries inside an economically integrating region and non-existent for financially highly …

Venture Capital And Firm Performance Over The Long-Run: Evidence From High-Tech Ipos In The United States, James R. Brown

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Despite widespread interest in the key role that venture capital plays in financing young, high-tech firms, little is known about the relative performance of venture-backed firms over the long-run. Using data from the U.S. high-tech sector, this paper examines the performance and financing of venture- and non-venture-backed firms during the decade following their IPO. Venture-backed firms survive longer, grow faster, are more R&D intensive, have generally superior operating performance, raise more external equity, and have a greater cumulative impact on the U.S. high-tech sector. These findings suggest that the true legacy of venture capital finance extends well beyond the IPO.

Statistical Databases For Economic Research On The Financing Of Small Firms In The United States, Charles C. Ou

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper updates information about the databases available for researchers in conducting small business financial research. A definition of a statistical database is provided first as a basis for selecting a database suitable for statistical research. Five major databases are discussed in detail, followed by a brief discussion of eight data sources for time series information on activities in specific financing markets for small firms. Comments are provided on the strengths and weakness of each of the five major databases regarding their uses for conducting different types of research and on possible areas for improvement.

Deer-vehicle accidents (DV As) are a problem in many areas. They cause millions of dollars in property damage, personal injury, and loss of life each year. This thesis examines whether DVAs in Vigo County, Indiana during the year 2000 were spatially autocorrelated; and whether DV As selected by deer habitat were spatially autocorrelated. Specifically using Moran's I to test for spatial autocorrelation this study determined if and to what degree spatial autocorrelation existed among these DVAs. A Moran's I value of .0023 shows that the accidents occurred randomly. These DV A data were then used to plot a map which …
