Individuation Revisited: Implications For Parent Education, Jodi Dworkin, Chih-Yuan Lee

Researchers have suggested that adolescents' increase in autonomy is accompanied by maintaining close relations with parents. In this article, we explore this process of individuation from the perspective of mothers. Nearly 900 (n=878) white mothers of children aged 2 to 14 were interviewed via the telephone about their child's independence and their perception of parent-child connectedness. Analyses revealed that from the perspective of mothers, while independence increased across childhood, parent-child connectedness decreased. These data suggest the need to support parents in remaining connected to their children as they enter adolescence. Implications of these findings for parent education are considered.

Biomass Estimation Using Statistical And Neural Network Analysis Of Aster Data, Vijay O. Lulla

This study assessed the performance of different biomass estimation methods using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) lll data in a temperate forest. Multiple linear regression statistics of spectral band data and derived indices with biomass values were compared with advanced neural network models created with spectral band data and indices to model biomass values. Biomass for the study area was estimated using both of these methods and the results were discussed. The data were analyzed using multivariate statistical analysis. Context: Primary Health Care in Uganda is provided through the Uganda National Minimum Health Care Package. UNMHCP aims to provide essential health care for all. Northern Uganda has been at war for twenty years. Setting: In 1995 Uganda created internally displaced people (IDP) camps to provide security for the population attacked by the rebel group Lord's Resistance Army. Approximately two million people (85% women and children), live in 144 IDP camps. The difficult living conditions in IDP camps may have a direct effect on health. Exit Strategies Of Venture Capitalists In Hot Issue Markets: Evidence From The “Neuer Markt" In Germany, Wolfgang Bessler, Andreas Kurth

In this study we analyze the IPO exit behavior of venture capitalists (VCs) in the Neuer Markt, the former market for young growth companies in Germany. We find empirical evidence that VCs were able to time their exit quite successfully in the primary market and to some extent also in the secondary market. The larger the number of shares being sold by the VCs at the IPO date, the lower is the IPO performance after expiration of the lock-up period. The Exit Rates Of Liquidated Venture Capital Funds, Markus Laine, Sami Torstila

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Exit rates provide a simple yet practical measure for evaluating and benchmarking the performance of venture capital funds. We create a sample of 138 liquidated U.S. venture capital funds and investigate the outcomes of their 4,549 portfolio companies. We study exit rates, proportions of different exit routes, and their determinants. The median fund in our sample exited 19% of portfolio companies through an IPO, 7% through a sale of listed equity, and 23% through mergers or acquisitions. There exist, however, interesting differences between fund types: In particular, large funds and fund management firms have significantly higher exit rates.

Free And Costly Trade Credit: A Comparison Of Small Firms, Susan Coleman

Trade credit is a major source of financing for small firms. This article examines the extent to which small firms use trade credit as well as the extent to which they use "free" versus "costly" trade credit. Those firms that use free trade credit make payment within the discount period. Alternatively, firms that use costly trade credit forego available discounts and may also make payment after the due date thereby incurring substantial additional costs. Appropriate Measures To Use Money Laundering Prevention As An Antidote To Tax Evasion, Patricia Torres Serpel, Amir Shachmurove

Money laundering, which is closely linked with tax evasion and informal trade, is facilitated by the poorly regulated financial institutions of "mafia nations". These nations make billions of dollars by laundering money and giving safe haven to drug dealers and corrupt politicians, allowing them to transfer money globally. Money laundering prevention policies require financial institutions to periodically update their customer's personal information. Furthermore, they attemp to match tax and transaction reports collected from banks and non-banks around the world to detect tax evasion. This research explains how efficient policies for preventing money laundering can help reduce tax evasion.

The Effect Of Nafta On Mexican Agricultural Exports To The United States: The Case Of Coffee Beans, 1970-2003, Mario M. Carrillo-Huerta, Israel Minor Bonilla

Since its implementation in 1994, NAFTA's impacts on trade have been extensively and positively evaluated at an aggregate level, but not so much at a regional or sectorial level. Through time series analysis, this paper studies NAFTA's impact on Mexican exports of coffee beans to the U.S. The study shows a NAFTA's positive, although short-lasting effect (for two-three years) on the studied variable, mainly because the international market of coffee beans used to function on a quota system, thus preventing Mexico from capitalizing (and furthering) on the comparative advantage derived from its location, close to the U.S. market.

Often economists are asked to value business. Many times the information provided is minimal and of questionable value. Data may be provided by parties wishing to bias the valuation. The financial statements typically provided are balance sheets and income statements. These sources can be fraught with errors, omissions and even fraud. The cash flow statements derived from these statements can be misleading and any analysis from these spurious statements is sure to be questioned. Who Adds Value To Ventures? Understanding The Roles And Relative Contributions Of Key Advisors In High-Technology Startups, David Y. Choi, Martin Stack

During the process of starting and growing a company, entrepreneurs seek help from their key advisors, which include its directors, advisory board members, financiers, as well as others informally affiliated with the venture. This paper examines how the various groups add value to a venture and assesses the relative value of their contributions. Through a survey of high technology entrepreneurs, we find that directors, advisory board members and informal advisors add significant value by offering their expertise in various fields. Surprisingly, investors add relatively little value, even in such key areas as strategic planning and finance. While professional venture capitalists …

A survey investigation of the value of an external audit was undertaken in the summer of 2004 that was based primarily on the same questions that were used in a similar survey completed in 1984. Because of changes in auditing and the new regulatory structure, the question arose about the perception of such changes among the sample from the Fortune 500 used in the survey. Four additional questions were added to those used in the original survey that sought opinions related to the implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
