Opportunity, Democracy And Political Violence: A Sub-National Analysis Of Conflict In Nepal, Alok K. Bohara, Neil J. Mitchell, Mani Nepal

With more than 8000 deaths in eight years, a Maoist insurgency, reinforced by ethnic cleavages, has resulted in substantial levels of political violence in Nepal. With fresh district-level data, and drawing on theoretical insights from both the conflict and human rights literatures, research that has relied primarily on cross-national comparisons, we develop and test hypotheses using a sub-national research design. We find support for ""opportunistic"" strategic interaction between government and opposition. Opportunity is conceived geographically, politically, and internationally, and our findings contribute new evidence for the importance of geography but also of democracy in their effects on the levels of …

Debating The Events Of September 11th: Discursive And Interactional Dynamics In Three Online Fora, Laura Robinson

This study examines the constituencies, patterns of interaction, and ideologies in three online fora created to discuss the events of September 11th, 2001. Drawing on comparative case studies, the research explores the frames and discursive styles used by Brazilian, French, and American participants to articulate their views about this polarizing topic. The research identifies commonalities and differences across the three cases with respect to trends in posters' participation, interaction patterns between forum participants, and the ideological content of the posts themselves. Interpretive examination of posts from the three sites elucidates linkages between modes of discourse, ideological positions, and faction membership. …

Civil-Military Relations In A Civilized State: Panama, Ronald D. Sylvia, Constantine P. Danopoulos

This article traces and analyzes civil-military relations in Panama. After a brief overview of the role of the National Guard in the country politics, the article concentrates on political developments since the 1989 U.S. invasion to overthrow the Noriega regime and the subsequent elimination of the Panamanian military. The study seeks to shed light on political life in an armyless and politically and socially fractionalized country occupying a sensitive strategic location. Queequeg's Tomahawk: A Cultural Biography, 1750-1900, Timothy J. Shannon

Since the colonial era, the tomahawk has served as a symbol of Indian savagery in American arts and literature. The pipe tomahawk, however, tells a different story. From its backcountry origins as a trade good to its customization as a diplomatic device, this object facilitated European-Indian exchange, giving tangible form to spoken metaphors for war, peace, and alliance. The production, distribution, and use of the pipe tomahawk also illustrated contrasting Indian and European notions of value and utility in material objects, exposing the limits of such goods in promoting cross-cultural mediation and understanding.

The so-called war on terrorism has prompted calls for revisions to the 1949 Geneva Conventions on armed conflict and the 1977 Additional Protocols thereto in order to address terrorist-related warfare, but I believe that claims for a major reform of international humanitarian law are primised on a variety of misconceptions of that law.

The following essay is a revised version of one that orginally appeared at The Crimes of War Website (www.crimesofwar.org) as part of a debate on "Rethinking the Geneva Conventions."

The purpose of this research project is to demonstrate that the traditional analysis of Rabelais's Pantagruel has been superficial and has failed to answer or resolve the controversy over the real message of the text. Many critics have speculated that the text is anti-Christian but have failed to conclusively prove this claim. As a result, there is an opposing group of critics who have countered this position ultimately challenging that it can not be proven that the text is really anti-Christian. Using the rhetorical mnemonic approach developed by Daniel Martin, I am able to show that the text is based …

The authors address one of the fundamental assumptions underlying the conduct of the War on Terrorism - the nature of our enemy, whether perpetrators of terrorist activities are criminals or soldiers (combatants). Although the United States recognizes that terrorist acts are certainly illegal, it has chosen to treat perpetrators as combatants; but much of the world, including many of our traditional allies, have opted for a purely legalistic approach. Disagreement about assumptions is not the only basis for divergent policies for confronting terrorism, but certainly explains much of our inability to agree on strategies to overcome what we recognize as …

Pyrosequencing is a new DNA sequencing method relying on the sequencing-bysynthesis principle and bioluminometric detection of nucleotide incorporation events. The objective of this thesis is to design a protocol for the improvement of the identification of fungi and mold samples in the outdoors and in enclosed environments. Fungi (mold) and bacteria are naturally present in both indoor and outdoor environments. Pyrosequencing method has been introduced as an alternative detection. Efforts are currently shifting from structural to functional genomics, in which the related functions of genomic sequences are being studied.
