Hardly can any continent, region, or community claim immunity from it. Its causes, characteristics, and controlling mechanisms are as diverse and complex as there are terrorist groups. The impacts of terrorism, on other hand, are lethal and far-reaching as are government responses against it. The main focus of this research is to automate medical form processing. An important step in this process is separating handwriting from printed text characters. We developed a filtering technique that extracts handwritten text from the printed text in the form. Once the handwritten text is segregated, each line of the segregated text is identified. The identification step is followed by character segmentation. Statistical analysis is performed on the gaps between the characters in each line. This results in a binormal curve clearly depicting two regions indicating if the gap represents the spacing between characters within a word or between …

The Fort Mojave Indians of California and Mohave Indians of Arizona were once united on their aboriginal territory. Their lifestyle was impacted by interaction with the Spanish, fur trappers, military explorers and emigrant parties; Spanish interaction with the Mojave in the 1600s resulted in little change. The fur trappers of the 1820s generally lacked cultural awareness and respect of Mojave resources. Military expeditions along the 35th parallel into Mojave territory were generally well received and aided by some Mojave, while other Mojave were cautious of the "foreign invaders." Emigrant parties soon followed, causing alarm among the Mojave as they believed …

Propagation of ballistic shock from the region of impact to the locations of critical components can result in human injury and component failure in a combat vehicle, leading to reduced effectiveness of the vehicle and its crew. The armor joints of the ground vehicle can be designed to reduce these possibilities of failure. There is a rich intellectual history to the sociological study of crime and punishment that encompasses multiple and interrelated traditions. Some of these traditions trace their roots to the European social theorists of the nineteenth century, particularly Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Karl Marx. Although only Durkheim and Weber systematically studied law (and only Durkheim actually studied punishment), all three social theorists facilitated the development of sociological research and theory on crime and punishment. Durkheim's Suicide: A Study in Sociology for example, investigated the relationship between social integration and suicide rates, which, in turn, provided a model of inquiry for …

Noah Feldman has emerged as one of the most serious and thoughtful contributors to U.S. strategy in the age of terrorism and counterterrorism. Professor Feldman spent a good chunk of 2003 in Baghdad as a constitutional advisor to the Iraqi Governing Council, which was established under the occupation government of Ambassador Paul Bremer. Since then, Feldman has become an important commentator on U.S. policy in Iraq. Many young political operatives cycled through Iraq in 2003 and 2004, but Feldman was unusually well qualified for his position. He holds a degree in Islamic thought, speaks fluent Arabic, and specializes in the …

Many past and current generations of historians, anthropologists, and literary writers have acknowledged the existence of a Delaware Indian nation. They, however, have failed to thoroughly understand or address the historical and cultural dynamics that contributed to both the formation and quick decline of this Indian nation. This multidisciplinary study includes the oral traditions and oratory of Delaware Indians, the observances of Moravian missionaries and colonial-revolutionary officials, and contemporary anthropological and historical sources, to construct the building of the Delaware nation during the eighteenth century.;Once decentralized and living in the Delaware River watershed, three phratries or animal tribes (Turtle, Turkey, …

A Model-Based Algorithm For Environmentally Adaptive Bathymetry And Sound Velocity Profile Estimation, David Bruce Cousins

This dissertation presents the derivation and demonstration of novel, Adaptive Bathymetric Estimation algorithms (ABE) for use with forward looking sonar arrays in shallow waters. In addition to providing high-resolution localization of the targets on the ocean bottom in front of the host vehicle, it automatically estimates a local sound speed profile (SSP) model, and corrects the sonar localization for ray bending arising from refraction. The implementation of this algorithm arises from the combination of three advanced technologies: (1) high frequency, high resolution forward looking sonar, (2) advanced satellite based navigation and positioning systems (GPS), and (3) model-based parameter estimation techniques …

In September 1979 President Jimmy Carter publicly announced his decision to support the deployment of the MX missile and mobile basing scheme in Utah and Nevada. Despite local opposition and the close proximity of the proposed base to its headquarters, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) remained silent until 5 May 1981, when the First Presidency issued a statement opposing the MX plans.
