Driver’S Licenses And Illegal Immigration: Issues Of Controversy, Catherine M. Marshall
Driver’S Licenses And Illegal Immigration: Issues Of Controversy, Catherine M. Marshall
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Got ID? Having an official form of identification is imperative in the United States for legal, travel and government purposes. The increases in illegal immigration and security concerns in this country have caused officials to evaluate the role of driver’s licenses as forms of identification with legal and illegal immigrants. Traditionally driver’s licenses have been granted to legal citizens only; however, several states have adopted systems making it easier for illegal immigrants to qualify for distinct certificates to drive. This has sparked a national debate regarding the proper use of driver’s licenses as identification. While some believe that granting driver’s …

Americanizing The American Woman: Symbols Of Nationalism In The Ladies Home Journal, 1890-1900, Kaithlyn Kayer
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
When the Ladies’ Home Journal began in 1883, its creator, Mr. Cyrus H. K. Curtis, could not have possibly dreamed that the magazine would grow to be the most influential woman’s journal of all time. A material culture analysis of American nationalistic emblems published in the Ladies’ Home Journal between 1890 and 1900 will determine how Edward Bok, editor, controlled nationalism in the feminine market, displaying the openness of women to nationalism in the late 19th century. It will also reveal how Bok created and controlled an educational tool he deemed “Americanization”, establishing a technique that magazines would replicate in …
Winning Wirzburger And Defeating The Blaine Amendments: Arguing Present Efficacy Instead Of Past Intent, Brendan Michael Groves
Winning Wirzburger And Defeating The Blaine Amendments: Arguing Present Efficacy Instead Of Past Intent, Brendan Michael Groves
ExpressO
The case of Wirzburger v. Galvin, currently on a writ of certiorari to the Supreme Court, may set the tone for all religious discrimination cases in the future. Massachusetts’ constitutional amendments that proscribe any citizen initiatives from either dealing with religion in general or attempting to repeal the states Blaine Amendment are at issue in the case. Petitioner’s counsel, the Becket Fund, rightly views this case as paramount in the long-march to victory over the anti-Catholic Blaine Amendments still codified in 37 state constitutions. However, they have lost almost every stage of the case.
This article argues that Wirzburger and …

Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley
Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley
Theses and Dissertations
Although there is general agreement that feedback plays an important role in student performance, the majority of the studies found in the research literature explore the impact of different types of feedback in a traditional and university-level setting. In order to explore the impact of different feedback types in a non-traditional distance learning setting, 352 high school students enrolled in courses offered through BYU's Independent Study (IS) department received either delayed feedback or immediate feedback generated by Speedback™, BYU's automated grading and feedback program, depending on whether they had opted to submit end of unit assignments by mail or …

Evaluating The Predictive Validity Of The Speed Dial Version Of The Dial-3, Developmental Indicators For The Assessment Of Learning., Roger Anthony Walk
Evaluating The Predictive Validity Of The Speed Dial Version Of The Dial-3, Developmental Indicators For The Assessment Of Learning., Roger Anthony Walk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this research was to validate psychometric integrity of the Speed DIAL screening instrument by establishing its predictive validity. The validation process included determining what, if any, associations existed between the predictor variable, Speed DIAL and the outcome variable, the Virginia Standards of Learning third-grade math and total English tests.
Gender and age were factors in the study. Finally, certain intervening variables, those occurring after the predictor variable, but before the outcome variable, were included in the study. These interventions were supplementary programs or placements provided students in the hopes of positively influencing students' academic performance. The …

An Analysis Of Major Facilitators To Their Success As Reported By Successful Women Administrators., Lisa Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study was designed to review the history of women in leadership and to evaluate the identified facilitators of success for women in leadership positions. Participants were asked to identify the facilitators that they considered important to their success. The facilitators were then compared to determine the most commonly occurring and the most influential among those cited by the participants. The results reflected those facilitators such as mentoring programs, training programs, as well as informal opportunities. Emotional intelligence was also examined in the context of this research.
The findings of this qualitative study yielded the facilitators of success as …
