Trains of quasi-periodic high-frequency internal waves (IWs) of large amplitude are common in the upper thermocline of the ocean. Sources for these waves may be different ones but it is not always possible to experimentally establish them for certain. We analyzed results of many IW experiments carried out in different representative regions of the World Ocean, including continental margins in the Mid-Atlantic Bight, in the northwestern Pacific at Kamchatka, the Seyshelles-Mascarene bottom rise, and some regions of the open ocean where the intense short-period IWs occur. Speculations On A Schematic Theory Of The Younger Dryas, Carl Wunsch

The possible implications of a change in deep ocean mixing generated by the abrupt coverage of continental shelves during deglaciation is explored schematically. A simple Cartesian continental shelf/deep ocean tidal model is used to mimic the behavior of tidal dissipation at a variety of frequencies relative to a basin-near-resonance. The actual estimated sea level curve is then used to calculate a representative deep water tidal dissipation through time, which is then translated by means of a one-dimensional loop flow to explore the implications of a change in deep ocean mixing. In the past decade, indigenous knowledge systems have witnessed a belated renaissance, both in policy instruments of international organizations and in some international law agreements. In the progressive emancipation of indigenous knowledge systems, two key issues have arisen. The first is the controversial appropriation of various products, innovations, art forms, and intellectual property of indigenous knowledge systems. A particularly contested aspect of this phenomenon has been characterized as biopiracy. The second closely related issue is whether dominant regimes for the protection of intellectual property are compatible with indigenous knowledge systems.

In this Article, Enron is positioned as a promising opening in the debate about economic globalization and the regulation of advanced capitalism in North America. As a contribution to that debate, the author suggests that there are two aspects of advanced capitalism which call for supranational response and regulation. First, advanced capitalism is increasingly transnational (as distinct from international and intranational). This brings unique regulatory challenges to the fore. Second the regulation of advanced capitalism can be usefully understood as a substantive equality issue (as that concept in understood in Canadian law). The debate over whether it serves or undermines the interests of justice for lawyers to temper the zeal of their advocacy based on considerations of morality or justice has largely been polarized between two camps: traditionalists and moralists. Traditionalists defend the amoral role of lawyers, arguing that lawyers should remain moral neutral in their representation of clients. Moralists propose alternative social justice lawyering models, which urge lawyers' morally engagement in their choice of clients, their interpretation of law, and their counseling of clients.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an 8-week training program on performance measures in high school aged female volleyball players. Twenty-five female volleyball players from the Rhode Island Junior Rams volleyball club program (mean age 15.6 ± 1.15) completed the study. The subjects trained two nights per week for 8 weeks using different methods of resistance training techniques. The resistance training program involved a full body workout consisting of 2 sets of 10 exercises during each training session. Background: Data suggest that African Americans lose less weight and show fewer improvements in cardiovascular diseases such as blood pressure following gastric bypass surgery (GBP).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe differences in weight loss between Caucasian and African American patients following GBP and to identify if these differences are related to dietary intake. This study also sought to identify differences in blood pressure and serum lipid levels between African Americans and Caucasians after GBP.

Abnormalities In The Ozark Hellbender, (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis Bishopi) In Arkansas: A Comparison Between Two Rivers With A Historical Perspective, Waylon R. Hiler, Benjamin A. Wheeler, Stanley E. Trauth

We documented abnormalities of Ozark hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi) populations in the Eleven Point River (Randolph County, Arkansas) and the Spring River (Fulton County, Arkansas) as part of ongoing monitoring efforts in this species. We found abnormalities in 90% (9 of 10) and 40% (36 of 97) of hellbenders in the Spring River and Eleven Point River, respectively, during the 2003-2004 field seasons. Most abnormalities found in Eleven Point hellbenders were generally less invasive and seemed to be more intrinsic to the species' natural history (i.e., vicissitudes of living), whereas those found in Spring River hellbenders were gross morphological aberrations. …

The relationship between a tree's crown radius and diameter at breast height (DBH) has a variety of uses including forest competition studies, tree crown densities, spacing and stocking relationships, wildlife habitat suitability models, and tree volume estimations. Estimating DBH from mean crown radius (MCR) is of interest to natural resource managers because MCR can be estimated from high resolution digital imagery using remote sensing techniques. DBH is a common tree dimensional characteristic that is used to quantify tree and stand structure. Status Survey Of The Arkansas Endemic Crayfish, Fallicambarus Gilpini Hobbs And Robinson, Henry W. Robison, Brian K. Wagner

Fieldwork was conducted during 2002-2003 on the rare, Arkansas endemic crayfish, Fallicambarus gilpini Hobbs and Robison. Collections at 87 localities revealed this crayfish at 8 sites, all located in southeastern Arkansas in Jefferson and Cleveland counties which significantly expands its known range. Fallicambarus gilpini was generally found inhabiting roadside ditches and areas of standing water where it was always taken from upslope areas away from the static water. A sex ratio of 1:1.3 males to females was determined for this species. Ovigerous females were collected from burrows on 20 March 2003. A conservation status of "threatened" is recommended for this …

Two geographically separate units of Arkansas Post National Memorial were surveyed via fixed-radius plots to document songbird species composition, richness, and diversity by migratory status and nesting guild. At the Memorial Unit, 60 species vere recorded with the Brown-headed Cowbird, Red-winged Blackbird, and Northern Cardinal being most common. individuals of these three species comprised 30% of the total number of birds recorded despite representing only 5% of the species encountered. About 2 1/2 times more resident birds were recorded than migratory birds. However, species richness and diversity of resident and migratory species were similar. DNA molecules within chromosomes undergo constant, dynamic changes yet maintain the integrity of the primary DNA sequence. DNA replication, adjustment of helical density, resolution of catenenes, repair of DNA damage, and homologous recombination each involve breakage and religation of the phosphate backbone of the double helix. Although the analysis of dsDNA breaks is facile, the analysis of ssDNA nicks is not. The principal impediment is that conventional, one-dimensional electrophoresis methods cannot readily detect ssDNA nicks in the context of dsDNA breaks. Myths are significant in explaining the existential questions of life, but when they are adopted uncritically, they may generate more harm than good. Admittedly, there is no way out of myth; we are the mythical creature. We need, therefore, to become more aware of myth and more critical of the myths we already, if only unknowingly, have adopted. This research addresses common misconceptions of the definitions of myths, attempts to identify the conscious and unconscious use of myths in our daily lives, and ultimately introduces the concept of modified myth adoption. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most expensive mental disorders, costing U.S. citizens $77 billion every year (Reinberg, 2004). Although ADHD effects between 3-7% of U.S. children (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000), there are many misconceptions about the disorder and concerns have been raised regarding appropriate diagnosis and treatment in children, adolescents, and adults. This study investigated the location, habitat preferences, and diel movements of burbot (lota lota) and salmonids in a small tributary stream in late spring, early summer. The research provides base-line information on fish distribution prior to the replacement of a culvert and reconnection of upstream reaches. The tributary was divided into six 100-meter reaches using blocker nets and data was collected using mark-recapture and electrofishing techniques. The community was dominated by coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), northern mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdii bairdii), brook lamprey (Ichthyomyzon fosser), and the burbot. Although it is nominally a tropical locale, the semiannual wind reversals associated with the Monsoon system of the Arabian Sea result annually in two distinct periods of elevated biological activity. While in both cases monsoonal forcing drives surface layer nutrient enrichment that supports increased rates of primary productivity, fundamentally different entrainment mechanisms are operating in summer (Southwest) and winter (Northeast) Monsoons. Moreover, the intervening intermonsoon periods, during which the region relaxes toward oligotrophic conditions more typical of tropical environments, provide a stark contrast to the dynamic biogeochemical activity of the monsoons. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technique used primarily in medical settings to produce high quality images of the human body’s internal anatomy. Each image is of a thin slice through the body, with the typical distance between slices being a few millimeters. Brain segmentation is the delineation of one or more anatomical structures within images of the brain. It promotes greater understanding of spatial relationships to aid in such tasks as surgical planning and clinical diagnoses, particularly when the segmented outlines from each image slice are displayed together as a surface in three-dimensions. Newly forming species that have differentiated in allopatry may evolve numerous barriers that prevent the interbreeding when they come back into contact with each other. The objective of this dissertation is to evaluate some mechanisms of prezygotic reproductive isolation in the D. pseudoobscura subgroup. I begin by evaluating how the evolution of female preferences and male sexual characters lead to reinforcement between Drosophila pseudoobscura and its congener D. persimils. In particular, I will evaluate two alternative hypotheses; Preference Evolution and Discrimination Enhancement, to determine how selection reduces hybridization between these sister species.
