This paper relates the neglected history of an idealistic, secret medical fraternity which existed briefly in Lexington, Kentucky, during the first half of the 19th century. It was created for students in the Medical Department at Transylvania University, the fifth US medical school, founded in 1799. One goal of the fraternity was to counter the widespread dissension and often violent quarrels among doctors that characterized American medicine of that period. In the post World War II period only fifty women have been elected heads of state of their respective countries. Of these fifty women, eleven have come from South and Southeast Asia, including the first female head of state, Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka2. These eleven women represent the second highest number of elected women presidents and prime ministers in a world region, behind Western Europe.

Penicillin and other antibiotics were the original wonder drugs and laid the foundation of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Human health significantly improved with the introduction of antibiotics. By 1967, the U.S. Surgeon General declared victory over infectious diseases in the United States. But pride goes before a fall. The evolutionary pressure of antibiotic use selects for resistant strains. Effective drugs should be used. But when they are used, no matter how carefully, evolutionary pressure for resistance is created. The problem is not limited to antibiotics. Variants of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) develop resistance to anti-retroviral drugs. Antifungal agents face …

We propose an entropic measure to assess color homogeneity as well as deviations from a standard/ideal color. We illustrate the concept by analyzing samples obtained in a single screw extruder by mixing blue and yellow polymer pellets. Alternatively the proposed technique can be employed to assess the efficiency and degree of distributive mixing attained in polymer processing equipment.

The history of the development of knowledge of myasthenia gravis is reviewed. Clinical profiles of the immune and non-immune mediated forms of myasthenia are discussed. The current theory of pathogenesis is reviewed. Tests used to diagnose myasthenia gravis, and their comparative diagnostic yields are presented. Past and current modalities of treatment are reviewed. Future therapeutic strategies are introduced. The roles of the thymus and thymectomy in the genesis and treatment of myasthenia gravis are discussed.

METHODS: Ten SCA patients attending the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital Neurologic clinics, Al-Khoud, Oman in the 3 years starting from January 2000 were recruited for this study. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples and CAG repeat expansion analysis was carried out by polymerase chain reaction and sequencing, when required. Magnetic resonance angiography was used for the determination of the site of dominance of cranial venous return. Many aspects of the early life history of the red lobster Panulirus interruptus are little known, including the relationship between habitat structure, food resource availability, and nutrition of juveniles. We investigated the spatial and temporal differences in food intake, diet composition, and nutritional condition of juveniles at two sites along the Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico) with contrasting oceanographic and biological conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of child temperament and its effect on the outcome of conscious sedation using the following agents: Chloral Hydrate (35mg/kg), Meperidine (2mg/kg), and Hydroxyzine (2mg/kg).The Emotionality, Activity, Sociability (EAS) Temperament Survey for Children was used to measure the child's temperament. The temperament survey measures three realms (Emotionality, Activity, Sociability/Shyness). The sedation outcomes were rated using the modified North Carolina Behavior Rating Scale (NCBRS) from 1-4 (Quiet, Annoyed, Upset, and Wild). I examined the effects of potential predators in relation to habitat selection in Peromyscus leucopus. I also examined habitat selection in three other sympatric species (Blarina brevicauda, Blarina carolinensis, Sorex longirostris). I utilized data fiom 49 sampling sites on National Park Service land; Petersburg National Battlefield Eastern Front Unit (15), Five-Forks Unit (17), Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (15) and Booker T. Washington National Monument (12). Preliminary studies from our laboratory showed that cPLA2α may be responsible for approximately 50-60% of the PGE2 production in response to inflammatory cytokines. Thus, we hypothesized that a closely-related PLA2 is responsible for 40-50% of the PGE2 produced in response to inflammatory cytokines. To this end, we utilized RNAi technology, extensively optimized, to down regulate the expression of closely-related isoforms of phospholipase A2 in A549 cells and used an enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA) to quantitate the PGE2 produced. These studies found that cytosolic phospholipase A2α (cPLA2α) regulated 97.7% of the prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) produced in response to inflammatory …

The stability of eye movements in PD is not well understood but many patients report difficulty doing tasks that require stabilized fixation and gaze. The ability to stabilize an image on the retina is critical is acquiring visual information. The purpose of this study was to compare the stability of fixational eye movements of PD patients to those of age-matched controls. Co-parenting is the ideal parenting relationship after divorce, characterized by involvement of both parents in all decisions regarding their children. Children who report that their parents demonstrate healthy co-parenting are generally better adjusted than their peers who experience unhealthy co-parenting. The present study examined the potential mediating roles of co-parenting and parenting practices upon the relationship between marital status and young adult adjustment.
