Establishing the postmortem interval (PMI) of a decedent is one of the most important responsibilities a forensic investigator may face. An accurate PMI may aid in the identification of not only the victim, but also a suspect. Although many methods for determining time since death have been proposed, there is still a need to establish more reliable dating techniques. This study determines whether head hair from an individual deteriorates uniformly and if so, what association cuticle damage, fungal growth, and changes in proximal end morphology may have with PMI. The purpose of the study was to determine if the body weight support system (BWSS) maintains the targeted percentage of the subject's body weight support (BWS) during walking and to explore the relationship between unloading and ground reaction force. Sixteen healthy college students (mean age: 22 years old) were recruited as subjects. Tests were conducted using an instrumented treadmill with a BWSS. The BWSS harness was secured around the lower abdomen and pelvis of each subject for effective body weight support. Bottom-water hypoxia (≤2 mg O₂ l^-1) usually occurs on an annual basis on the Louisiana/Texas continental shelf from mid-May through mid-September over a large area (up to 20,000 km² in mid-summer). The effects of hypoxia on the benthic infauna (potential prey) for demersal fish were examined, because changes in optimal diet can lead to negative impacts on growth and reproduction. Benthic samples were taken in three areas (inshore and offshore out of hypoxia and in the hypoxic area) during August 2003. This work presents a case study, which attempts to improve the fault diagnosis and testability of the power supply current based testing methodology applied to a typical two-stage CMOS operational amplifier and is extended to operational amplifier with floating gate input transistors*. Female wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were captured and radio-marked in a bottomland hardwood forest in south-central Louisiana. Turkeys were monitored using radio telemetry from fixed points on Sherburne Wildlife Management Area, Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge, and Bayou des Ourses to observe seasonal patterns of space use, habitat preference and survival from 2002-04. The largest mean seasonal home range of 902.87 ha occurred during preincubation (15 Feb – 9 Apr; n = 24) when females typically search for suitable nest sites, and the smallest mean seasonal home range was 434.12 ha, during brood-rearing (1 Jun – 30 Sep; n = 32) …

Sugarcane bagasse is a source of lignocellulosic biomass. It is a potential renewable energy source for ethanol production. It is naturally cheap, plentiful and has high cellulose content. The sugarcane bagasse contains 34.5% cellulose, 24% hemicellulose, and 22-25% lignin. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide (O2-), hydroxyl radicals (OH?, and hypochlorite ion (OCl-), were found to remove both hemicellulose and lignin from sugarcane bagasse. Ox-B (Day. 2004, US Patent 6,866,870), a solution of sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide, was studied for its effectiveness as a pretreatment for lignocellulosic biomass. In 1971, the Ramsar Convention, an international environmental treaty was ratified to specifically address conservation planning and land use management issues involving wetlands of the world. Ramsar provides an international designation award called, the Wetlands of International Importance List, which formally acknowledges globally important wetland landscapes. Ramsar outlines specific criterion nominated wetland sites must possess for consideration of this listing.

This research was conducted to determine the effects of feeding different P levels with and without phytase supplementation on broiler growth performance, bone breaking strength (BBS), and P excretion. An experiment with 4 trials was conducted with 7,840 Ross x Ross straight run broilers. For each trial, 1,960 broilers were allotted on d 0 to 4 treatments with 7 replications per treatment with 70 broilers per replication. The existence of shape selectivity in non-covalent molecularly imprinted polymers has been proven using molecular probes. A series of amines varying with different structural motifs and secondary amines with different sized side chains were imprinted, and binding evaluated by HPLC for each amine on polymers imprinted with similar amines. Trends in the binding relationships revealed two major contributions of cavity structure on selectivity afforded by molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Demarcation of essential fish habitat for juvenile red snapper (Lutjanus campechansis) in the Gulf of Mexico is considered critical for effective management of this valuable species. Positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) are well established and powerful tools for medical diagnostics but even integrated PET/CT scanner images still lack the necessary quality and resolution that would make medical diagnoses flawless. In this thesis experiments were performed to statistically determine the effect that image acquisition parameters have upon diagnostic accuracy. Images from different PET/CT scanners were assessed by comparing subject human diagnostic accuracy from a sample of both professional and student volunteers. In this study, the effects of ozonation and the addition of amino acids on rice starches were determined in terms of pasting properties by using rapid visco-analyzer, thermal characteristics by using differential scanning calorimeter, crystallinity by using x-ray diffraction, and resistant starch yield. Results from viscosity analysis showed that the addition of lysine (6%) to ozonated Sigma rice starch significantly reduced peak viscosity (PV), minimum viscosity (MV), final viscosity (FV), and setback (SBK) by 918, 1024, 1023, and 105 cP, respectively. Moreover, it decreased pasting time, resulting in the faster swelling upon heating and less rigid gel formation upon cooling. …

Torture used to be incompatible with American values. Our Bill of Rights forbids cruel and unusual punishment, and that has come to include all forms of corporal punishment except prison and death by methods purported to be painless. Americans and our government have historically condemned states that torture; we have granted asylum or refuge to those who fear it. The Senate ratified the Convention Against Torture, Congress enacted antitorture legislation, and judicial opinions spoke of "the dastardly and totally inhuman act of torture.” Then came September 11.

In this Essay, I will discuss the "cycle of violence”, that transforms victims into perpetrators, focusing on the Aileen Wuornos case. I will examine the odd lack of support for Wuomos and others like her as soon as they become perpetrators. I will then talk about men and boys who have been sexually abused and become perpetrators. I will conclude by arguing that the prevailing feminist approach to crime and violence has been too narrowly focused on victims, and has - witting or not - contributed to the nation's extraordinary and exclusive turn to punishment over the past three decades.

Significant differences in growth and prespawning body morphology were detected among three stocks of Atlantic salmon reared in a common marine environment. Smolts originating from river-specific broodstock of the Machias, East Machias, and Dennys populations were reared at two marine net-pen facilities for 25 months. Significant differences in stock-specific growth were observed among two stocks at both sites, suggesting a genetic basis for the observed phenotypic variation. There was a significant stock effect to the total measured phenotypic variation based on collected truss network analyses. Linear discriminant function analysis of a truss network of morphometric distances allowed for 73% accuracy …

The mosquito larvicide methoprene is a juvenile growth hormone mimic that is widely used to control mosquitoes. This chemical disrupts normal mosquito development, drastically inhibiting emergence from the pupal to the adult stage. Methoprene is active at extremely low levels and is widely used; so it could affect arthropods, other than mosquitoes, that have similar endocrine systems. This study evaluates the efficacy at controlling mosquitoes in storm water drainage catch basins and potential nontarget effects of methoprene. This dissertation research addressed the fundamental question of what the general microbial flora within the oyster is and what influence depuration and relay have on bacterial communities in the oyster. Comparisons of bacterial community profiles were made using culture-dependent and culture-independent isolation techniques and a nested PCR-DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis) approach. Differences in the composition of the bacterial community between culture-dependent and culture-independent profiles were detected. The effect of culture-based techniques is significant and results in a biased representation of community structure. The idea that evolutionary processes naturally propel a state of affairs toward a higher, perhaps more complex or advanced, state of affairs is one that may extend to any context characterized by a dynamic time frame, including oligopoly models of repeated Prisoner's Dilemma. The author argues that, contrary to the popular assertion that coordinated pricing necessarily requires voluntary coordination, oligopoly markets may evolve to a state of cooperation—one of collective profit maximization—absent a conscious state of coordination among the players, or even knowledge of such cooperation.
