From the Roman aqueducts to Bonneville Dam, humans have built structures to moderate the extremes of natural water flow. Some of these structures, from Roman cisterns to the catch basins under modern city streets, have inadvertently supplied mosquitoes with the standing water in which they thrive and multiply. Even more mosquito habitat may have been created in the last decade by a change in the Clean Water Act. The original drive behind the Act, in 1972, was the elimination of point-source pollution: sewage and industrial discharge into waterways. In the 1990s new regulations aimed to prevent non-point-source pollution, due to …

Discordant Harmonies In Fingernail Clam Populations (Musculium Transversum) Of Mississippi River Backwater Lakes, Jim Eckblad
Discordant Harmonies In Fingernail Clam Populations (Musculium Transversum) Of Mississippi River Backwater Lakes, Jim Eckblad
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The populations of Musculium transversum from 8 backwater lakes have been studied over a 29-year period based upon over 440 grab samples. These lakes in Navigation Pool 9 of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) range in size from 2 to 255 hectare surface area, mean depths from 0.2 to 0.9 meters, with mean water exchange times from 0.5 to almost 57 hours. Samples from the 1989-91 period suggested summer Muscu!ium populations had declined to about 9 percent of their mid-1970 levels. Deterministic models have attempted to explain this decline. More recent sampling suggests a substantial recovery of Musculium populations (mid-summer …

Threatened By Industry, Saved By Science: Mussel Propagation At The Fairport Biological Laboratory, James Pritchard
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
During the 1890s, people on the Mississippi River exploited mussel populations to support a thriving button industry. Within a brief time, they noticed significant declines in mussel populations, and called on the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries to save the resource. This paper discusses mussel propagation studies, techniques, and activities carried on in association with the Fairport Biological Laboratory (Iowa) from about 1908 to 1932. While scientists developed sophisticated techniques and had success in mussel propagation, changing habitat conditions in the river (caused mainly by pollution and dam construction) meant limited success in rescuing mussel stocks, while the introduction of plastic …

In Situ Screening To Optimize Variables In Organic Reactions, David Berkowitz, Mohua Bose, Sungjo Choi
In Situ Screening To Optimize Variables In Organic Reactions, David Berkowitz, Mohua Bose, Sungjo Choi
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
A biphasic process for rapid screening of organic reactions comprising monitoring relative rates of parallel organic reactions. The screening process is suitable to determine the efficacy of different reactants, process conditions, and process enhancers such as catalysts or promoters. The biphasic process also allows multiple samples to be analyzed/monitored simultaneously. In addition because enzymes are used to monitor the reaction product in this invention, when that product is chiral and an enantio-discriminating enzyme is used to monitor the product, in addition to the relative rates, enantioselectivities of a set of parallel organic reactions can also be determined. The monitoring is …
Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne
Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that biological and psychological differences between sexes contribute to the underrepresentation of women in certain fields, challenging the assumption that equal representation is always the appropriate goal. It critiques the notion that disparities necessarily indicate systemic flaws, emphasizing that freedom of choice should allow for different occupational outcomes without implying discrimination.

A Correlation Between The Genes Responsible For Penicillin And Erythromycin Resistance In Streptococcus Pneumoniae And The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (Mic) Values: A Potential Approach For Molecular Detection Of Susceptibility, Mohd Nasir Mohd Desa, Kwai Lin Thong, Parasakthi Navaratnam
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
The correlation of pbp 2b restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns of fifty clinical isolates of Malaysian Streptococcus pneumoniae, as well as the distribution of determinant genes for erythromycin resistance; mefE and ermB, with the respective minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for penicillin and erythromycin (determined by agar dilution method) were examined. Strains with penicillin MIC of ≥ 0.5 μg/ml had unique pbp 2b RFLP patterns that were absent in the penicillinsusceptible strains. The prevalence of ermB, either alone or together with mefE, was frequently observed in strains with higher MIC values (> 8 μg/ml) whereas mefE alone was observed …

Bacteria Fauna From The House Fly, Musca Domestica (L.), W.A. Nazni, B. Seleena, H.L. Lee, J. Jeffery, T.A.R. Rogayah, Mohd Sofian-Azirun
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
The house fly, Musca domestica has long been considered a potential agent for disease transmission ever since its existence. The general truth of this assertion remains undisputed till the present day in spite of increasing awareness toward an improved sanitation and better hygiene. The habitual movement of house fly from filthy substrata such as human faeces, animal excreta, carcasses, garbage, etc. makes them ideal candidates for disease transmission such as cholera, shigellosis, salmonellosis and others when settling on food. Fly as a potential mechanical vector of pathogenic bacteria was elucidated in this study by examining flies from various breeding sites …

Comparison Of Beta-Glucuronidase Expression And Anatomical Localization In Bombarded Immature Embryos Of Banana Cultivar Mas Via Biolistic Transformation, W.W. Chee, M. Jalil, M.O. Abdullah, R.Y. Othman, Norzulaani Khalid
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
To obtain stable expression of a foreign gene, it is important to have optimized conditions for plant genetic transformation. Here, a GUS intron-containing gene driven by CaMV 35S promoter was used to optimize the conditions of biolistic transformation of banana immature embryos and also for the study of GUS localization in the transformed cells. The GUS activity detected histochemically and fluorometrically were further analysed by microscopy. This histological study confirmed the results in the histochemical and fluorometric assay, where highest expression of GUS was achieved when the immature embryos bombarded with the helium pressure of 1350 psi and placed at …

Partial Characterization Of Genes Encoding The Atp-Binding Cassette Proteins Of Cryptosporidium Parvum, L.L. Chan, M.Y. Fong
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
The present study aims to explore the possible mechanisms underlying the multidrug resistance characteristic of Cryptosporidium parvum by detecting the presence of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) protein encoding genes, especially one that shows high similarity to members belonging to the multidrug resistance protein (MDR) and multidrug resistance associated protein (MRP) subfamilies. PCR using ABC-specific degenerate primers successfully amplified two unique fragments, designated Cpnbd1 and Cpnbd2, from C. parvum genomic DNA. Cpnbd1 exhibited high degree of homology (99-100) with the nucleotide- binding domains (NBDs) at the NH2 -terminal halves of two previously reported ABC proteins (CpABC and CpABC1) of human and bovine …

Pixel-Based Skin Color Detection Technique, I. Zaqout, R. Zainuddin, S. Baba
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
In this paper we have used a simple and efficient color-based approach to segment human skin pixels from complex background, using a 2-D histogram-based approach. For skin segmentation, a total of 446,007 skin samples from the training set is manually cropped from the RGB color images, to calculate three lookup tables based on the relationship between each pair of the triple components R, G, B. Derivation of skin classifier rules from the lookup tables are based on how often each attribute value (interval) occurs, and their associated certainty values. One of the simplest features used for the human face detection …
