Plasma Sialic Acid Levels In The Offspring Of One Parent With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, R. Qvist, I.S. Ismail, S. Muniandy, H.F. Lee, K. Chinna, A. Zaini

Sialic acid, oral glucose and plasma lipids were determined in 70 control subjects age range 20-60 and 150 individuals of age range 20-60 who were offspring of one type 2 diabetic parent. The number of first degree relatives who had impaired glucose tolerance were 50. The total sialic acid concentration was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the first degree relatives when compared to the control subjects. However the total sialic acid concentration was significantly higher in the offspring with normal glucose tolerance than those with impaired glucose tolerance. There was no significant difference in the lipids between the control subjects and the offspring with normal glucose tolerance. But the total cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly higher in the offspring with impaired glucose tolerance when compared to the control subjects and the offspring with normal glucose tolerance. Our study shows that the desialylation of the vascular endothelium is an early event that precedes the expression of impaired glucose tolerance or any lipid changes in asymptomatic offspring of one type 2 diabetic parent.

Susceptibility Of Aedes Aegypti And Aedes Albopictus To Temephos In Four Study Sites In Kuala Lumpur City Center And Selangor State, Malaysia, C.D. Chen, W.A. Nazni, H.L. Lee, Mohd Sofian-Azirun

Larvae obtained from Taman Samudera (Gombak, Selangor), Kampung Banjar (Gombak, Selangor), Taman Lembah Maju (Cheras, Kuala Lumpur) and Kampung Baru (City centre, Kuala Lumpur) were bioassayed with diagnostic dosage (0.012 mg/L) and operational dosage (1 mg/L) of temephos. All strains of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus showed percentage mortality in the range of 16.00 to 59.05 and 6.4 to 59.50 respectively, after 24 hours. LT50 values for the 6 strains of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus were between 41.25 to 54.42 minutes and 52.67 to 141.76 minutes respectively, and the resistance ratio for both Aedes species were in the range …

Larvae of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus obtained from 6 consecutive ovitrap surveillance (OS) in Taman Samudera and Kg. Banjar were evaluated for their susceptibility to temephos. Larval bioassays were carried out in accordance with WHO standard methods, with diagnostic dosage (0.012 mg/L) and operational dosage (1 mg/L) of temephos respectively. Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus obtained from six OS in Taman Samudera showed resistance to diagnostic dosage of temephos with percentage mortality between 5.3 to 72.0 and 9.3 to 56.0, respectively, while Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus obtained from Kg. Banjar showed resistance to temephos with percentage mortality between …

Phosphorus (P), a required nutrient for all livestock, has numerous essential physiological functions in the body that include energy transfer (ATP), structure of bone, teeth, and membranes, and buffering pH changes in the rumen (salivary phosphate). Ruminants use a larger proportion of dietary P than nonruminants because rumen microbes produce phytase, the enzyme that hydrolyzes P from phytate. The majority of P in most grains is in phytate form, a P form largely unavailable to swine and poultry.

We hypothesized that substituting a corn hybrid with high cell-wall content and high neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility (HCW) for a hybrid with lower cellwall content and lower NDF digestibility (LCW) would improve feed intake and milk production in lactating Holstein cows. There was a 3.6 percentage unit difference in NDF content and a 4.1 percentage unit difference in 30-h in vitro NDF digestion between the 2 corn hybrids. In trial 1, 40 cows (12 primiparous) ranging in milk production from 24.1 to 44.0 kg/d, following a 2- wk preliminary period, were used in a crossover design with 2-wk periods. …

A simulation was carried out to investigate the methods of analyzing uncertain binary responses for success or failure at first insemination. A linear mixed model that included, herd, year, and month of mating as fixed effects; and unrelated service sire, sire and residual as random effects was used to generate binary data. Binary responses were assigned using the difference between days to calving and average gestation length. Females deviating from average gestation length lead to uncertain binary responses. Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is one of the most economically important diseases in preweaned calves. This study examined the health records of 45,497 calves over a 20-yr period to determine environmental and genetic factors influencing the incidence of IBK. Three data sets were analyzed with an animal model. The first data set (n = 41,986) evaluated environmental factors and genetic differences among nine purebred (Angus, Braunvieh, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Pinzgauer, Red Poll, and Simmental) and three composite breeds (MARC I, MARC II, and MARC III). Weaning weights of calves diagnosed with IBK were 8.9 kg lighter (P < 0.05) than weights of healthy calves. This article claims that three common arguments against gay marriage - the definitional, procreation, and slippery-slope arguments - are quite bad, the worst of the lot. The definitional argument asserts that marriage just is the union of one man and one woman, and that the definition alone is a sufficient defense against claims for gay marriage. The procreation argument claims that marriage's central public purpose is to encourage procreation, and so the exclusion of same-sex couples is justified. State Interests In Marriage, Interstate Recognition, And Choice Of Law, Brian H. Bix

One of the great complications of the current marriage debates is the way that federalism and conflict of law issues interact - both at the level of principle and constitutional doctrine - in the area of marriage and divorce. This article begins by looking at federalism in the context of domestic relations at a general level. It then considers how current family law rules and constitutional constraints complicate the analysis. Finally, it considers the way in which recognizing party choice of law might respond to some, but by no means all, of the problems in the area.

Sixty-six Arkansas reservoirs were sampled with rotenone from 1997 through 2004 to determine the distribution and species richness of small, nongame fish species in manmade lentic environments. Eighty-five small fish species distributed among 13 families were collected. Fish distribution and species richness varied by reservoir size, ecoregion, and reservoir type. Species richness was significantly correlated with reservoir size and the number of small species occurring in reservoir drainages. Some small species apparently maintained breeding populations in reservoirs, other species occurred in low numbers and may not have maintained breeding populations, and some species occurred sporadically, probably as stragglers from nearby …

Distribution Of Bats In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of The Arkansas Delta Region, H. Bobby Fokidis, Stephen C. Brandebura, Thomas S. Risch

Bat distribution data is incomplete for the delta region of Arkansas. We extensively surveyed 16 counties within the Mississippi alluvial plain that comprises the delta from late spring to early fall 2004 using mist nets. We obtained 44 new county records for 9 species: Myotis lucifigus, M. austroriparius, Pipistrellus subflavus, Eptesicus fuscus, Lasiurus seminolus, L. borealis, L. cinereus, Nycticeius humeralis, and Corynorhinus rafinesquii. We generated updated distribution maps for these species and eastward Arkansas range expansions were documented for L.seminolus. Based on recent collections and review of the literature, 20 species of freshwater amphipod crustaceans are listed from the state of Arkansas. Included are species from the families Allocrangonyctidae, Crangonyctidae, Gammaridae and Hyalellidae and the genera Allocrangonyx, Bactrurus, Crangonyx, Stygobromus, Gammarus, and Hyalella. Ten of the species are restricted to subterranean groundwaters, 2 are closely associated with groundwater but also occur in surface waters, and 8 are known primarily from surface waters. Two of the species are in the process of being described in the literature, whereas 2 remain only provisionally recognized to date. On the basis of this new …
