Isoniazid Intoxication. Light And Electron Microscopic Findings In Muscle And Sural Nerve Biopsies, Younes Abu-Ghalyun Jan 2005

Isoniazid Intoxication. Light And Electron Microscopic Findings In Muscle And Sural Nerve Biopsies, Younes Abu-Ghalyun

Neurosciences

This study indicates the cellular and ultrastructural changes of the thigh muscle and sural nerve biopsies of a patient intoxicated as a result of isoniazid intake for tuberculosis treatment. The observation of the relative degradation of myelination and fibre type II groups was apparent. The regular concentric layers of the myelin sheath were destroyed. There was a consistent increase in irregular vacuolization and membranous structures in the axon and the cytoplasm of the Schwan cells. It is concluded that poisoning cannot be attributed solely to the axonal degradation but also to the direct toxic effect of the drug.

Anorexia Nervosa. Emphasis On Its Medical Complications, Abdulhameed A. Al-Habeeb, Naseem A. Qureshi Jan 2005

Anorexia Nervosa. Emphasis On Its Medical Complications, Abdulhameed A. Al-Habeeb, Naseem A. Qureshi

Neurosciences

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a well-recognized heterogeneous psychiatric disorder, associated with high morbidity and mortality with several medical complications. Besides a brief review, this paper also reports on a single female patient with AN. Eating disorders are reported to be slightly more common among western cultures, but developing countries are not immune to eating disorders. This patient showed both the psychopathology of abnormal eating behavior and serious physical complications and despite all possible treatment interventions, she ultimately died. We discuss different aspects of AN including the importance of constant social support from key relatives.

Florida Statute 63.042(3): A Policy Of Exclusion, Melissa Cusack Jan 2005

Florida Statute 63.042(3): A Policy Of Exclusion, Melissa Cusack

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Nearly thirty years ago the state of Florida launched a campaign against homosexual adoptions. What began in Miami with a public debate over a referendum to make discrimination based on sexual orientation unlawful ended with a community divided and a welfare system taxed even further. "In 1977, Florida became the first state to statutorily ban adoption by gay or lesbian adults by enacting the homosexual adoption provision. Currently, it is the only state with such a prohibition."

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries Jan 2005

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Environmental intervention projects aim to re-engineer the cultural landscape. Entering at a particular moment in time, such projects commonly produce a "baseline" analysis. This analysis captures elements in the environment that are later compared to measured changes the project claims to produce. Illustrated through a case study of a Tanzanian community conservation non-governmental organization, the argument made in this paper is that uncritical use of such baselines in measuring and evaluating environmental intervention projects is a practice that tends to impose ahistorical understandings of human-environmental relationships that have deep historical roots. The paper illustrates how an attempt to draw a …

Effect Of Heat Treatments And Reduced Absorber Layer Thickness On Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Thin Film Solar Cells, Vinodh Chandrasekaran Jan 2005

Effect Of Heat Treatments And Reduced Absorber Layer Thickness On Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Thin Film Solar Cells, Vinodh Chandrasekaran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Thin film solar cells with Copper Indium Gallium Diselenide (Cu(In,Ga)Se2) absorber layers is one of the most promising candidates to emerge as an efficient solar cell technology in the near future. CIGS cells with efficiencies of 19.2 % have already been reported [1]. In this study, CIGS absorber layers are fabricated by a two-stage all-solidstate manufacture-friendly process. In the first stage, designated as precursor deposition, Copper and Gallium are sequentially deposited followed by co-deposition of Indium and Selenium. In the second stage, designated as selenization, the substrate is annealed at high temperatures in a selenium environment during which …

Controls On Nitrogen Cycling In Terrestrial Ecosystems: A Synthetic Analysis Of Literature Data, M. S. Booth, E. Rastetter, John M. Stark Jan 2005

Controls On Nitrogen Cycling In Terrestrial Ecosystems: A Synthetic Analysis Of Literature Data, M. S. Booth, E. Rastetter, John M. Stark

Biology Faculty Publications

Isotope pool dilution studies are increasingly reported in the soils and ecology literature as a means of measuring gross rates of nitrogen (N) mineralization, nitrification, and inorganic N assimilation in soils. We assembled data on soil characteristics and gross rates from 100 studies conducted in forest, shrubland, grassland, and agricultural systems to answer the following questions: What factors appear to be the major drivers for production and consumption of inorganic N as measured by isotope dilution studies? Do rates or the relationships between drivers and rates differ among ecosystem types? Across a wide range of ecosystems, gross N mineralization is …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Background: Phages, viruses that infect prokaryotes, are the most abundant microbes in the world. A major limitation to studying these viruses is the difficulty of cultivating the appropriate prokaryotic hosts. One way around this limitation is to directly clone and sequence shotgun libraries of uncultured viral communities (i.e., metagenomic analyses). PHACCS http://phage.sdsu.edu/phaccs, Phage Communities from Contig Spectrum, is an online bioinformatic tool to assess the biodiversity of uncultured viral communities. PHACCS uses the contig spectrum from shotgun DNA sequence assemblies to mathematically model the structure of viral communities and make predictions about diversity.

Results: PHACCS builds models of possible …

Method For Discovering Novel Dna Viruses In Blood Using Viral Particle Selection And Shotgun Sequencing, Mya Breitbart, Forest Rohwer Jan 2005

Method For Discovering Novel Dna Viruses In Blood Using Viral Particle Selection And Shotgun Sequencing, Mya Breitbart, Forest Rohwer

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Rapid identification of viruses is needed to monitor the blood supply for emerging threats. Here we present a method that meets these criteria and allows for the shotgun sequencing of novel, uncultured DNA viruses directly from human blood. This method employs selection based on the physical properties of viruses combined with sequence-independent amplification and cloning. We show that both single- and double-stranded DNA viruses can be recovered from blood samples using this approach. In addition, we report the discovery of novel anellovirus sequences in the blood of healthy donors. PCR primers designed to amplify these novel anellovirus sequences were then …
