Creating Markets For Ecosystem Services: Notes From The Field, James Salzman
Creating Markets For Ecosystem Services: Notes From The Field, James Salzman
Faculty Scholarship
Created by the interactions of living organisms with their environment, ecosystem services support our society in many critical ways, from providing clean air and water, decomposing waste, and pollinating flowers, to regulating climate, and pacifying floodwaters. Interest in ecosystem service markets has recently exploded, with a cover article in The Economist just a few months ago. Scholarship in the field, though, is still quite young. Despite their immense practical value, with rare exception, ecosystem services are neither prized by markets nor explicitly protected by the law. In recent years, an increasing number of initiatives around the world have sought to …

The Globalization Of Private Knowledge Goods And The Privatization Of Global Public Goods, Jerome H. Reichman, Keith H. Maskus
Faculty Scholarship
Global trade and investment have become increasingly liberalized in recent decades. This liberalization has lately been accompanied by substantive new requirements for strong minimum standards of intellectual property (IP) protection, which moves the world economy toward harmonized private rights in knowledge goods. While this trend may have beneficial impacts in terms of innovation and technology diffusion, such impacts would not be evenly distributed across countries. Deep questions also arise about whether such globalization of rights to information will raise roadblocks to the national and international provision of such public goods as environmental protection, public health, education, and scientific advance. This …

Comparative Three-Dimensional Imaging Of Living Neurons With Confocal And Atomic Force Microscopy, Helen Mcnally, Bartek Rajwa, Jennifer Sturgis, J. Paul Robinson
Other Nanotechnology Publications
Atomic force microscopy applications extend across a number of fields; however, limitations have reduced its effectiveness in live cell analysis. This report discusses the use of AFM to evaluate the three-dimensional (3-D) architecture of living chick dorsal root ganglia and sympathetic ganglia. These data sets were compared to similar images acquired with confocal laser scanning microscopy of identical cells. For this comparison we made use of visualization techniques which were applicable to both sets of data and identified several issues when coupling these technologies. These direct comparisons offer quantitative validation and confirmation of the character of novel images acquired by …

Measurements of DNA conductivity, hybridization, and melting using electronic means can have wide applications in molecular electronics and biological sensors. We have fabricated nanogap break-junctions by electromigration through thin gold-on-titanium films. 18-mer thiolated ds-DNA molecules were covalently attached between the electrodes and dc electrical measurements were done. The conductance was measured through the molecule before and after a temperature ramp from 300 to 400 K. A dramatic decrease in conductance was observed, analogous to an electrical fuse, possibly attributed to complete or partial denaturing of the ds-DNA molecules bridging the nanogaps. We also show evidence that the dc resistance of …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) encodes two potential seven-transmembrane-spanning proteins with homologies to cellular chemokine receptors, M33 and M78. While these virus-encoded chemokine receptors are necessary for the in vivo pathogenesis of MCMV, the function of these proteins is unknown. Since vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration is of critical importance for the development of atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases, the ability of M33 to promote SMC motility was assessed. Similar to human CMV, MCMV induced the migration of mouse aortic SMCs but not mouse fibroblasts. To demonstrate whether M33 was required for MCMV-induced SMC migration, we employed interfering-RNA technology to specifically …

Assessing The Effects Of September 11 Events On Flight Training, Atef Ghobrial, Gregory Streib
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
On September 11, 2001 the U.S. and the World witnessed the atrocities that terrorists inflicted. These tragic events have changed the approach for aviation security planning, management and policy. This paper attempted to address the effects of September 11 on the flight training business. We designed a questionnaire and surveyed 12 flight training schools in Metro Atlanta. Analysis of the data was conducted using simple statistical correlations and cross tabulation. The results of the analysis are discussed in the body of the paper, and limitations of the study are also addressed.

Precautions Against What - The Availability Heuristic And Cross-Cultural Risk Perception Meador Lecture Series 2004-2005: Risk And The Law, Cass R. Sunstein

Because risks are on all sides of social situations, it is not possible to be globally "precautionary." Hence, the Precautionary Principle runs into serious conceptual difficulties; any precautions will themselves create hazards of one kind or another. When the principle gives guidance, it is often because of the availability heuristic, which can make some risks stand out as particularly salient, regardless of their actual magnitude. The same heuristic helps to explain differences across groups, cultures, and even nations in the perception of risks, especially when linked with such social processes as cascades and group polarization. One difficulty is that what …

Manejo De Cipós Na Amazônia, Jeffrey J. Gerwing, Edson Vidal
Manejo De Cipós Na Amazônia, Jeffrey J. Gerwing, Edson Vidal
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Evaluation Of A Mechanical System For Reconstructing Soil On Surface Mined Land, John P. Fulton, Larry G. Wells
Evaluation Of A Mechanical System For Reconstructing Soil On Surface Mined Land, John P. Fulton, Larry G. Wells
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The existence of excessive soil compaction has hindered the surface mining industry from returning land to pre−mining productivity after reclamation, especially on prime farmland soils. Heavy earthmoving equipment used during reclamation tends to generate root−limiting bulk densities that adversely affect plant growth thereby decreasing yields. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate a mechanism, called the ‘Soil Regenerator,’ which reconstructs soil media at minimum bulk density during surface mine reclamation. The prototype soil forming mechanism was mounted on the front of a conventional bulldozer. Soil was placed in long narrow windrows by a scraper or bulldozer. As the …
