No survey of plant communities has been performed recently in the Bergen Swamp, NY, USA, a unique strongly minerotrophic mire with active marl deposition. In summer 2004, I established an array of randomly placed plots throughout Bergen Swamp survey plant communities. The plant survey included stem counts of herbaceous plant species and shrubs within 1m square quadrats. I performed a Raup and Crick clustering analysis at two different spatial scales to group plant communities and found that there were five communities at the subplot level, and three communities at the plot level. Control of water and air in the root zone of plants remains a challenge in the microgravity environment of space. Due to limited flight opportunities, research aimed at resolving microgravity porous media fluid dynamics must often be conducted on Earth. The NASA KC-135 reduced gravity flight program offers an opportunity for Earth-based researchers to study physical processes in a variable gravity environment. The objectives of this study were to obtain measurements of water content and matric potential during the parabolic profile flown by the KC-135 aircraft. Conducted a reclamation leaching experiment in a drip-irrigated pistachio orchard south of Huron, California, during the winter of 2002-2003. The study was conducted to quantify the leaching water required to remove salts from the effective root zone of trees. This experiment tested a new reclamation leaching technique: multiple lines of low-flow drip tape were used to apply water to the area of salinity accumulation along a tree row. This new technique allows water to be applied where there is salt accumulation along the tree row, as opposed to putting water on the entire area of the field. Since reclamation leaching …

Arthropod Diversity And Allochthonous-Based Food Webs On Tiny Oceanic Islands, Lloyd W. Morrison

Very small islands, on the order of a few hundred square metres in area, have rarely been the focus of ecological investigations. I sampled nine such islands in the central Exumas, Bahamas for arthropod species abundance and diversity using a combination of pitfall traps, pan traps and sticky traps. Three islands had no terrestrial vegetation, three islands contained only Sesuvium portulacastrum L., a salt-tolerant perennial that had been experimentally introduced 10 years ago, and three islands supported one or two naturally occurring plant species. Plumage Convergence In Picoides Woodpeckers Based On A Molecular Phylogeny, With Emphasis On Convergence In Downy And Hairy Woodpeckers, Amy C. Weibel, William S. Moore

Adult and juvenile plumage characters were traced onto a well-resolved molecular based phylogeny for Picoides woodpeckers, and a simple phylogenetic test of homology, parallelism, and convergence of plumage characters was performed. Reconstruction of ancestral character states revealed multiple events of independent evolution of derived character states in most characters studied, and a concentrated changes test revealed that some plumage characters evolved in association with habitat type. For example, there was a statistically significant association between loss of dorsal barring and use of densely vegetated habitats among Picoides species. The logistic regression has become an integral component of any medical data analysis concerning binary responses. The main issue rising after the adaptation of the final model is its goodness-of-fit. The fit of the model is assessed via the overall measures and summary statistics and comparing them in the case of hypernateamia.

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

When a medical intervention prevents a dichotomous outcome, the size of its effect is often estimated with the prevented fraction. Some interventions may reduce the severity of an outcome without entirely preventing it. To quantify the effect of a severity-moderating intervention, a measure termed the mitigated fraction (MF) is proposed. MF has broad applicability, because it measures the overlap of two empirical distributions based on their stochastic ordering. It is also useful in the specific context of medical interventions, because it shares certain structural and functional features with the prevented fraction. Assumed that the distribution of the lifetime of any unit follows a lognormal distribution with parameters μ and σ . Also, assume that the relationship between μ and the stress level V is given by the power rule model. Several types of bootstrap intervals of the parameters were studied and their performance was studied using simulations and compared in term of attainment of the nominal confidence level, symmetry of lower and upper error rates and the expected width. Conclusions and recommendations are given.

Little research has been done on sample size and power analysis under repeated measures design. With detailed derivation, we have shown sample size calculation and power analysis equations for timeaveraged difference to allow unequal sample sizes between two groups for both continuous and binary measures and explored the relative importance of number of unique subjects and number of repeated measurements within each subject on statistical power through simulation.
