The Bush Administration's Forward Strategy For Nonproliferation, John R. Bolton Jan 2005

The Bush Administration's Forward Strategy For Nonproliferation, John R. Bolton

Chicago Journal of International Law

It is good to be home among so many friends at the American Enterprise Institute ("AEI"). I am particularly happy that Jeremy Rabkin and AEI have just published The Case for Sovereigno: Why the World Should Welcome American Independence. I congratulate him on his far-reaching analysis, in which he reinforces that security remains the core responsibility of sovereign states. I thought it would be useful today to look at our nonproliferation policy in this context, and the degree to which the Bush Administration has launched initiatives that work cooperatively with other sovereign states to deny rogue nations and terrorists access …

Tapeworms Of Elasmobranchs (Part I) A Monograph On The Lecanicephalidea (Platyhelminthes, Cestoda), Kirsten Jensen Jan 2005

Tapeworms Of Elasmobranchs (Part I) A Monograph On The Lecanicephalidea (Platyhelminthes, Cestoda), Kirsten Jensen

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

This represents the first monographic and phylogenetic treatment of the order Lecanicephalidea. The main objective was to treat the Lecanicephalidea at the generic level, while providing information on morphology, taxonomic history, phylogenetic relationships, geographic distribution, and host associations of the group. Following an introduction to the morphology of the Lecanicephalidea, the phylogenetic placement of the group is addressed. This is followed by a review of the taxonomic history of the group and relationships within, including summaries of 29 previously used classification schemes. Despite the generic focus of this study, the taxonomic status of 137 previously recognized lecanicephalidean species was evaluated, …

The Tricky Nature Of Proving Genocide Against Saddam Hussein Before The Iraqi Special Tribunal, Michael J. Kelly Jan 2005

The Tricky Nature Of Proving Genocide Against Saddam Hussein Before The Iraqi Special Tribunal, Michael J. Kelly

Cornell International Law Journal

In this article in the Symposium on Milosevic & Hussein on Trial, the author discusses procedural challenges to proving genocide in the trial of Saddam Hussein to argue that the legitimacy of the Iraqi Special Tribunal (IST) & the proof of genocide rest on a sense of fairness, transparency, & completion of trials on a reasonable schedule. The Geneva Convention definition of genocide is discussed in terms of the impact of general verses specific intent in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). A historical analysis of the colonial creation of Iraq relates Saddam's style of government control …

Staying Within The Negotiated Framework: Abiding By The Non-Discrimination Clause In Trips Article 27, Kevin J. Nowak Jan 2005

Staying Within The Negotiated Framework: Abiding By The Non-Discrimination Clause In Trips Article 27, Kevin J. Nowak

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note argues that the Panel in Canada-Generic Medicines correctly decided that the non-discrimination clause in Article 27 applies to the exceptions of Articles 30 and 31. Because Article 27 is the guiding force of Section 5, any exceptions to the rights granted under Section 5 must comply with the requirements set forth in Article 27. Although extreme applications of the non-discrimination clause could be limiting upon some exceptions, Articles 30 and 31 were not placed into TRIPs as complete escape clauses from the framework of Section 5. Additionally, the application of the non-discrimination clause to Articles 30 and 31 …

Leveling The Playing Field: Labor Provisions In Cafta, Marisa Anne Pagnattaro Jan 2005

Leveling The Playing Field: Labor Provisions In Cafta, Marisa Anne Pagnattaro

Fordham International Law Journal

Part I of this Article details labor problems in CAFTA countries, with specific emphasis on problems related to fundamental labor rights. Part II discusses the labor-related trading objectives mandated by the U.S. Congress in the TPA, including the relationship of those objectives to core international labor standards promulgated by the International Labor Organization ("ILO"). Part III then analyzes the labor provisions that are included in CAFTA. To the extent that these provisions do not fulfill the labor objectives set forth in the TPA and do not adequately promote core international labor standards, Part IV proposes provisions that the United States …

The Intellectual History Of Inter-War British Fascists, John Tucci Jan 2005

The Intellectual History Of Inter-War British Fascists, John Tucci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Between World Wars I and II, allied forces girded themselves to quash yet another enemy bent on world conquest: fascism. In England, however, the British fascists set about to save what they saw as a dying empire. In an effort to restore Britain's greatness, British fascism held to fascist principles and doctrine to stem the flow of immigration, which fascists saw as darkening the pure British culture. While many of the British fascists strongly admired Nazi Germany's version of fascism, they were unique in that they forged their solutions from social ills that were distinctly British. British fascists were unabashedly …

The Uptake Of Amino Acids By Microbes And Trees In Three Cold-Temperate Forests, Adrien C. Finzi, Sean T. Berthrong Jan 2005

The Uptake Of Amino Acids By Microbes And Trees In Three Cold-Temperate Forests, Adrien C. Finzi, Sean T. Berthrong

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Amino acids are emerging as a critical component of the terrestrial N cycle, yet there is little understanding of amino acid cycling in temperate forests. This research studied the uptake and turnover of amino acid N by soil microbes and the capacity of forest trees to take up the amino acid glycine in comparison to NH4+ and NO3−. This research was conducted in three temperate forests located in northwest Connecticut, USA. The three forests differed in soil parent material and canopy tree species composition. At all three sites, amino acids were released from soil organic …

"I Knew There Was Something Wrong With That Paper": Scientific Rhetorical Styles And Scientific Misunderstandings, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This selection unpacks scientific prose and claim substantiation for Nobel Prize winner, Stan Prusiner, in the transmissible spongiform encephlopathies field (i.e., mad cow disease). Applying linguistic strategies such as M. A. K. Halliday's "favorite clause type," the author examines argumentative strategies in dense scientific prose both in bold and cautious rhetorical styles and invented lexical changes in new scientific development.

Diverse Spatial, Temporal, And Sexual Expression Of Recently Duplicated Androgen-Binding Protein Genes In Mus Musculus, Christina M. Laukaitis, Stephen R. Dlouhy, Richard D. Emes, Chris P. Ponting, Robert C. Karn

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Background

The genes for salivary androgen-binding protein (ABP) subunits have been evolving rapidly in ancestors of the house mouse Mus musculus, as evidenced both by recent and extensive gene duplication and by high ratios of nonsynonymous to synonymous nucleotide substitution rates. This makes ABP an appropriate model system with which to investigate how recent adaptive evolution of paralogous genes results in functional innovation (neofunctionalization).

Results

It was our goal to find evidence for the expression of as many of the Abp paralogues in the mouse genome as possible. We observed expression of six Abpa paralogues and five Abpbg paralogues …

Descriptive Ecology Of A Turtle Assemblage In An Urban Landscape, Conner C. A, B A. Douthitt, Travis J. Ryan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We studied turtle populations inhabiting a canal and a lake (both man-made) within a heavily disturbed, urban setting. Six aquatic and semi-aquatic turtle species were collected in both habitats: spiny softshell turtle (Apolone spinifera), painted turtle (Chrysemys picta), common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina), common map turtle (Graptemys geographica), common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) and red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta). While G. geographica was the most common species in the canal habitat, T. scripta was most common in the lake habitat. We describe patterns of sexual size dimorphism and sex ratios for the three most abundant species (G. geographica, T. scripta and …

Modeling Mechanisms, Stuart Glennan Jan 2005

Modeling Mechanisms, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Philosophers of science increasingly believe that much of science is concerned with understanding the mechanisms responsible for the production of natural phenomena. An adequate understanding of scientific research requires an account of how scientists develop and test models of mechanisms. This paper offers a general account of the nature of mechanical models, discussing the representational relationship that holds between mechanisms and their models as well as the techniques that can be used to test and refine such models. The analysis is supported by study of two competing models of a mechanism of speech perception.

Cortactin Regulates Cell Migration Via Activation Of N-Wasp, Jennifer Kowalski, C. Egile, S. Gil, S. B. Snapper, R. Li, S. M. Thomas Jan 2005

Cortactin Regulates Cell Migration Via Activation Of N-Wasp, Jennifer Kowalski, C. Egile, S. Gil, S. B. Snapper, R. Li, S. M. Thomas

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Cortactin is an actin-associated scaffolding protein that regulates cell migration. Amplification of the human gene, EMS1, has been detected in breast, head and neck tumors, where it correlates with increased invasiveness. Cortactin can regulate actin dynamics directly via its N-terminal half, which can bind and activate the Arp2/3 complex. The C-terminal portion of cortactin, however, is thought to have limited function in its regulation of the actin polymerization machinery. In this report, we identify a role for the cortactin C-terminus in regulating cell migration and, more specifically, actin dynamics. Overexpression of either full-length cortactin or cortactin C-terminus is sufficient to …

Microarray Databases For Biotechnology, Richard S. Segall Jan 2005

Microarray Databases For Biotechnology, Richard S. Segall

Faculty Publications

Microarray informatics is a rapidly expanding discipline in which large amounts of multi-dimensional data are compressed into small storage units. Data mining of microarrays can be performed using techniques such as drill-down analysis rather than classical data analysis on a record-by-record basis. Both data and metadata can be captured in microarray experiments. The latter may be constructed by obtaining data samples from an experiment. Extractions can be made from these samples and formed into homogeneous arrays that are needed for higher level analysis and mining.

No Animals Were Harmed...: Protecting Chimpanzees From Cruelty Behind The Curtain, Lorraine L. Fischer Jan 2005

No Animals Were Harmed...: Protecting Chimpanzees From Cruelty Behind The Curtain, Lorraine L. Fischer

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Many people, interested in the way animals are treated in the entertainment industry, rely on the American Humane Association's end credit disclaimer, "No Animals Were Harmed During the Making of this Production" to quiet their concerns about animal mistreatment and to avoid supporting films or television programs that injure animals. However, the AHA's end credit disclaimer is misleading because it suggests that projects with the disclaimer are cruelty free. Even if a film or television show receives the "No Animals Were Harmed..." designation, chimpanzees cannot become "actors" and appear on the stage or screen without being subject to severe physical …

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThis report summarizes data for assessing the status of the Tooth Cave ground beetle (Rhadine persephone), a federally listed endangered species. Only the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) can determine the recovery and regulatory status of this species, and this report is intended as tool for assessing both. Data reviewed for this report were gleaned from USFWS files; additional information was obtained from the Mike Walsh (Texas Cave Conservancy), James R. Reddell (Texas Memorial Museum, The University of Texas as Austin), Mark Sanders (City of Austin), and Rose Farmer (Travis County). The Tooth Cave ground beetle was listed …
