Evaluating The Written Work Of Others: One Way Economics Students Can Learn To Write, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Amy Broughton, Jaime Copley
Evaluating The Written Work Of Others: One Way Economics Students Can Learn To Write, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Amy Broughton, Jaime Copley
Economics Faculty Research
The authors present a series of writing assignments that teaches students how to evaluate and critique the written economic work of others. The foundation text is McCloskey’s (2000) Economical Writing. The students’ dialogues with McCloskey, with each other, and with the authors of the pieces they evaluate sharpen their understanding of, and ability to use, language as an instrument of economic thought. Interviews with former students identify specific benefits from the student perspective of this approach. The authors show how the assignment series can be modified in several ways and how the general approach, as well as the foundation text, …

The All-Atlantic Temperature-Salinity-Pressure Relation And Patched Potential Density, Roland A. De Szoeke, Scott R. Springer
The All-Atlantic Temperature-Salinity-Pressure Relation And Patched Potential Density, Roland A. De Szoeke, Scott R. Springer
Journal of Marine Research
The relation between temperature, salinity, and pressure in the Atlantic Ocean is examined. Most of the Atlantic resolves itself into three two-dimensional manifolds of three-dimensional thermodynamic space: a northern, more saline, branch, and a southern, fresher, branch, each quite independent of pressure, and between them a bridge, on which density is uniform at constant pressure. The properties of the branches are crucial to the construction of joint potential density surfaces, patched together at 1000 db intervals. By resolving more finely in pressure (illustrated with 200 db spacing), a finer system of patched potential density surfaces can be obtained, and indeed …
Diffusion Scale Dependent Change In Anaerobic Carbon And Nitrogen Mineralization: True Effector Experimental Artifact?, Thomas Valdemarsen, Erik Kristensen
Diffusion Scale Dependent Change In Anaerobic Carbon And Nitrogen Mineralization: True Effector Experimental Artifact?, Thomas Valdemarsen, Erik Kristensen
Journal of Marine Research
Burrowing macrofauna is known to influence the diffusion properties and solute transport within sediments as well as promoting aerobic microbial processes. It has recently been argued that changes in diffusion scales also affect anaerobic microbial processes in sediments. We tested this contention on coastal sandy sediment using a widely employed sediment plug flux-incubation technique. Our results confirm that volume specific microbial carbon and nitrogen mineralization apparently are enhanced (6–15 and 3–9 times, respectively) in thin (1 mm) compared with thick (10 cm) sediment plugs incubated in anoxic seawater. However, differential accumulation of inhibiting substances among plug sizes cannot explain this …
Efficiency In Thin-Film Liquid System For Hosta Micropropagation, Jeffrey Adelberg
Efficiency In Thin-Film Liquid System For Hosta Micropropagation, Jeffrey Adelberg
Publications
Three varieties of Hosta (‘Striptease’, ‘Minuteman’ and ‘Stiletto’) at four densities (40, 80, 120 and 200 explants per litre) were micropropagated on semi-solid agar and a thin-film liquid system with intermittent wetting of plant tissue. The mechanics of wetting by a small wave front required a larger rectangular vessel (11 × 27=297 cm 2) compared to the common cylindrical baby food jar (18 cm 2). Plants multiplied more rapidly in the agitated thin-film system than on agar. Lower plant densities increased rates of multiplication in liquid, but had little or no effect on multiplication rate on agar. Increasing …

Determinants Of Adoption Of Security Systems To Address Bioterrorist Threats: An Analysis Of Dairy Farms In The Western United States, Nicolas K. Buttars, Allen J. Young, Deevon Bailey
Determinants Of Adoption Of Security Systems To Address Bioterrorist Threats: An Analysis Of Dairy Farms In The Western United States, Nicolas K. Buttars, Allen J. Young, Deevon Bailey
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Data generated from a survey of western dairy farms is used to determine the characteristics of dairy farmers who have undertaken to improve security measures on their farms during the past two or three years. The findings suggest that decisions to improve on-farm security are influenced by the producer's awareness of how to develop a security policy and also the size of the dairy operation. The results also support the notion that farms may be vulnerable to bioterrorist attacks because most farmers do not believe it is important to establish on-farm security policies.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent times, we have witnessed an unprecedented growth of textual information via the Internet, digital libraries and archival text in many applications. While a good fraction of this information is of transient interest, useful information of archival value will continue to accumulate. We need ways to manage, organize and transport this data from one point to the other on data communications links with limited bandwidth. We must also have means to speedily find the information we need from this huge mass of data. Sometimes, a single site may also contain large collections of data such as a library database, …

Slope Stability Of Laterite Soil Embankments, Ikiensinma Gogo-Abite
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Embankments are key elements in the infrastructural development of structures such as dams, bridges, and roads. Residual soils are generally used as fills in the construction of embankments in areas were residual soils such as laterite is the dominant soil types. Laterite soils have the characteristics of losing its shear strength with time and in fully saturated conditions and its properties varies from region to region. The soil property is influenced by the chemical composition and the environment. The binding agent iron oxide in such soils changes its composition with time and in the presence of moisture. Sudden failures of …

Fine-Scale Genetic Structure And Social Organization In Female White-Tailed Deer, Christopher E. Comer, John Kilgo, Gino D'Angelo, Travis Glenn, Karl Miller
Faculty Publications
Social behavior of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) can have important management implications.
The formation of matrilineal social groups among female deer has been documented and management strategies have been proposed based on this well-developed social structure. Using radiocollared (n = 17) and hunter or vehicle- killed (n = 21) does, we examined spatial and genetic structure in white-tailed deer on a 7,000-ha portion of the
Savannah River Site in the upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina, USA. We used 14 microsatellite DNA loci to calculate pairwise relatedness among individual deer and to assign doe pairs to …

Passage of the Clean Water Act (CWA) of 1972 prompted states to invest significant resources to develop programs to control nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from forestry and other activities. Forestry-related agencies and organizations have since developed silvicultural best management practice (BMP) guidelines to reduce NPS pollution, maintain stream integrity, and meet state water quality standards. To determine the effectiveness and implementation level of best management practices (BMP) on public and private forestland, states further developed and implemented their BMP compliance monitoring programs. This study documents the similarities and differences in efforts, methods, resources, and expenditures among BMP compliance monitoring programs …
Narrative Art Therapy For Families That Have A Child With A Life-Threatening Illness, Andrea A. Seitz
Narrative Art Therapy For Families That Have A Child With A Life-Threatening Illness, Andrea A. Seitz
Art Therapy | Master's Theses in Print
Researchers have recognized the importance of meaningful collaboration between family medical and family therapy practitioners. A report published this year (2005) by the American Academy of Pediatrics spells out the need for pediatricians to be cognizant of the entire family’s needs when treating a child. Given the demands on pediatricians it seems almost impossible for them to provide psycho-social support needed by families. Therefore, a partnership between an MFT and a physician is a more realistic alternative. This proposal will offer an intervention model for working with families who have a child with a catastrophic illness. The treatment modality. Narrative …

Increasing evidence suggests that fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are neurotrophic in GnRH neurons. However, the extent to which FGFs are involved in establishing a functional GnRH system in the whole organism has not been investigated. In this study, transgenic mice with the expression of a dominant-negative FGF receptor mutant (FGFRm) targeted to GnRH neurons were generated to examine the consequence of disrupted FGF signaling on the formation of the GnRH system. To first test the effectiveness of this strategy, GT1 cells, a GnRH neuronal cell line, were stably transfected with FGFRm. The transfected cells showed attenuated neurite outgrowth, diminished FGF-2 …
Assessing The Condition Of Juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia) Using Stable Nitrogen And Carbon Isotopes, Bethany L. Kempster
Assessing The Condition Of Juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia) Using Stable Nitrogen And Carbon Isotopes, Bethany L. Kempster
Digitized Theses
Offspring condition may predict a population’s future success. We studied the effects of nutritional stress on Δ N and Δ C in juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) handreared under ad libitum or food-stressed conditions, and compared them to conventional measures of condition. The degree of food stress significantly altered development, causing poor condition and increased corticosterone, glucose, and anemia. Despite this, we could not detect nutritional stress as measured by Δ N or Δ C and the birds did not display increased developmental instability. 15N enrichment may require greater levels of nutritional stress than used in this experiment. Δ C …
The Irreducibility Of Consciousness, Amy Kind
The Irreducibility Of Consciousness, Amy Kind
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
In this paper, by analyzing the Chalmers-Searle debate about Chalmers’ zombie thought experiment, I attempt to determine the implications that the irreducibility of consciousness has for the truth of materialism. While Chalmers claims that the irreducibility of consciousness forces us to embrace dualism, Searle claims that it has no deep metaphysical im- port and, in particular, that it is fully consistent with his materialist the- ory of mind. I argue that this disagreement hinges on the notion of physi- cal identity in play in the discussion. Clarifying this notion in turn helps to clarify what it means to claim that …

The Lymantria Dispar Nucleopolyhedrovirus Enhancins Are Components Of Occlusion-Derived Virus, James M. Slavicek, Holly J.R. Popham
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Enhancins are metalloproteinases, first identified in granuloviruses, that can enhance nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) potency. We had previously identified two enhancin genes (E1 and E2) in the Lymantria dispar multinucleocapsid NPV (LdMNPV) and showed that both were functional. For this study, we have extended our analysis of LdMNPV enhancin genes through an immunocytochemical analysis of E1 and E2 expression and localization. E1 and E2 peptide antibodies recognized proteins of 84 kDa and 90 kDa, respectively, on Western blots of extracts from L. dispar 652Y cells infected with wild-type virus. The 84- and 90-kDa proteins were first detected at 48 h postinfection (p.i.) …
